I hated the fist movie (probably because the FF are the most boring super group to ever exist.) but I might go see this one if only to see Galactus. If they screw Galactus up (I.E. make him a cloud?) all hell will be unleashed. Mostly, as long as he somewhat resembles the comicbook Galactus I will be happy.
Seriously, a cloud though? Galactus has to compete with Solar Flares for position as head destructive ball-o-gas in the universe? Lame.

As of yet, it's not confirmed how Galactus will appear in the movie. A cloud is one rumor I've read, but as far as I know it's not been confirmed (though if anyone has seen confirmation, feel free to drop me a PM).
I am almost looking forward to this movie. While I do so loathe that damn Surfer, the only reason I own a huge collection of his comic books is cause I wuv Thanos and I had to put up with the emo surfer to read about him. But for Galactus I'll watch. It will be interesting to see how they show him, even in the comic book Galactus doesn't have a physical form, the big guy with the phallic helmet is just how human minds choose to "see" him since their minds cannot comprehend a being as great as Galactus, with that in mind he could look like a 6 year girl with pig tails and a pink dress. Which would be utterly hilarious but might make people not like the movie anymore. I just hope Dr. Doom steals The Surfer's powers.

Payne has said the film is based upon Fantastic Four #48, in which Galactus also makes an appearance, as well as issues 57-60 in which Doom steals the Surfer's power. Payne has also said the film takes inspiration from the Ultimate Marvel limited series Ultimate Extinction.[10] As of March 2, 2007, Galactus' design was not yet done,[11] and by April 18 they were still unsure of whether he would speak.[12]
While not solid comfirmation, it does indicate he is likely in the movie. The focus of the story though seems to be more of the Doom wanting Surfer's powers thing.
i almost hope that galactus doesn't speak. they've already ruined the voices i had in my head for ghost rider and venom. i would still be cool if galactus didn't speak, but surfer knew what was requested of him. i really think this movie could the one of the best comic releases to date.
and on the subject of jessica alba. i agree that she's not the best actress in the world and i really don't like her as sue storm, but she definitely is eye candy. that chick is super hot. she's hot enough to play sue storm, but i think what i hate the most about her is how odd she looks w/ blonde hair. she looks almost out of place. but i'm cool enough w/ her as sue storm to not ***** about it too much. she makes a better sue storm than kirsten dunst made a mary jane.
Being Hot is an important requirement to play Sue. She is concidered the hottest human woman in the Marvel Universe. This can be backed up by quite a few quotes from the comics themselves...though I cannot substantiate this at the moment. I will dig around a bit and see if I can back it up if needed.
This means that to play her belieably requires two things;
One: being able to play someone with her meek personality and being able to grow into the assertive woman she becomes.
Two: being someone who can believably be conciderred the hottest woman on Earth. While not everyone here seems to find her attractive it seems, she has been placed as one of the hottest women in hollywood numerous times.
Personally I really liked her as Sue Storm/Richards. The only poorly cast actor in the first was Doom. He just seemed like an uncharismatic weenie. Very generic.
i agree that alba is definitely hot enough to play sue and i think she works for the part. i really can't think of anyone else at the moment that i would want in her place.
there was quite a bit that i didn't like about doom in the first movie, but hopefully they'll fix those flaws in this film. especially since he's not the main villain.
Its weird how all non-F4 fans that saw the movie all loved Doom. Well not all, but most of the one I talked too did. I'm Doom (though not F4) fan, he seemed a bit...toned down for the movie. I know he's wasn't the monarch of a country, but then again he was the CEO of a huuuge company so same thing. But he seemed to lack..something. Doom was always a charismatic intelligent leader, yet in the movie...not so much. Maybe they didn't want such a rocking villain so we'd focus on the F4?
Hmm. Colour me doubtful. This just strikes me as 'FF writer with a brain fever hyping his characters'. I don't really care that it's said in the comics. I mean, Amadaeus Cho was just randomly called, what, the seventh smartest person on earth? There's a bunch of people smarter. Writers like to bulk up their characters, and I have difficulty believing that the most attractive woman on the entire marvel earth happens to be Susan Storm, when there are several other characaters who are either mentioned as being hugely attractive as a character traits, and the entire non-powered world of models and stuff.
It has been mentioned and hinted at in more than just the FF comics. It is an attitude of Marvel themselves and not just a few writers.
there was quite a bit that i didn't like about doom in the first movie, but hopefully they'll fix those flaws in this film. especially since he's not the main villain.
Well, the idea of the first movie was to indroduce the characters. The problem with a "seper team" movie is you have less time to build up and grow each character than in a single hero movie. One of the Flaws of X-men is that most of the characters are left mostly undeveloped. Storm comes to mind. The first movie only really explores Magneto, Wolverine and Rogue. FF actually managed to explore all five key characters really well (while i didn't like this version of Doom, they did explore him as a person rather well)
They have stated that this time Doom will be more true to form.
From wikipedia, with sources left intact.
Director Tim Story has confirmed that Doom will be in the sequel, though in response to criticisms stated, "He will be back in full DOOM, not like we had him in the first film."[6] He will also apparently be after the power of the Silver Surfer. According to early production art, Doom will have changed his costume from his trenchcoat outfit to his traditional 616 Marvel look. A recent photo from a magazine showed Doom being hammered into a wall and choked by the Thing. The scars on his face are no longer there. It is said that Doom arrives in Latveria, takes it over and remains in the country until he learns of the Silver Surfer. The newest trailer shows him wearing long green robes and the Surfer attacking him nearby a waterfall, yet his face remains unseen. Recent pictures on the internet show Doom wearing a dark green cape and hood, metal chest plate with a dragon design, and a brand new mask with a more sinister tone. And in another TV spot you see the Fantastic Four in the Fantastic Car and separating then Ben flies up to Doom and punches him half his face is seen.
Its weird how all non-F4 fans that saw the movie all loved Doom. Well not all, but most of the one I talked too did.
this is how most comic films are. as i've said before, i'm a huge comic fan. been reading for what seems like forever. and it seems that everything that i hate about certain comic movies, the masses tend to love. like daredevil had way too many comic references. the normal moviegoer probably didn't pick up on any of these. but i saw everyone of them and was disgusted. also, ben affleck? c'mon! w/ x3 they did a lot of the comic stories really well on film but the dark phoenix saga was totally different. completely. i was disgusted by that. the way it happens in the comics wouldn't have made total sense, but they didn't have to change it that much. and ghost rider? don't get me started. w/ the first ff, they did a very good jobs. in fact, the more i think about it, it's probably one of the best comic films made to date as far as sticking to the comics goes. there are subtle differences, but they have to change a bit so that it makes at least a little sense to the masses.
I think this just stems from the fact that most (Marvel/DC/general action) comic readers have no grasp of how ludicrous their favourite comics really are. I mean, apart from general reasons like "Oh, I don't sci-fi/fantasy," or, "I don't like cartoons," people have got to realise that some storylines within comics are pretty out-there to those who don't read comics. Take the Dark Pheonix storyline - what's going to be more believable: that a space entity has taken control of a human and suddenly gone power-mad - or that the powers of a character, which have been steadily enhanced over the previous two films, suddenly experience yet another power surge? I'd suspect the latter.
At the end of the day, it's not so much about making sense or being understandable as it is simply being believable, and not shattering someone's suspension of disbelief. You can only push people so far until they simply start saying back "you can't expect me to eat this stuff up!"
i almost totally agree. they have to change things a bit so that the movie will appeal not only to the average comic fan, but also to the average movie goer. that's understood. and most everyone i know that's not a comic fan, loved both ghost rider and daredevil. while on the other hand, my friends who read comics weren't that impressed. w/ x3 i agree that it's a bit unbelievable that a space entity has taken over and gone mad, but making it a case of schizophrenia? not cool. it wasn't that her powers were out of control, it was that she had a whole 'nother personality. if her powers had just been out of control, i - the comic fan - could have bought that. but being a schizo? i don't think so. some things need to be slightly altered, and some things need to be completely left out and/or totally changed. but i don't feel that was the case w/ x3. it wasn't the movie that it should have been.
But why are you so attached to this specific version of Jean Grey? What is it, other than "because that's the way it is", that makes such a representation the best? My point is that there really is nothing to make that representation the best, and thus it may be for the better that it is changed. Again, what was so bad, as an idea, about making Jean Grey's Dark Phoenix personality something more mental than physical?
Nothing. Because what I think happens most often is that the ideas themselves, whilst not bad, are often lacking in good execution. Die-hard comic fans, because they are loyal to their characters, often therefore misplace their distaste at the idea rather than the execution.
Whether or not they should have included the Phoenix in X3 at all is debatable, but that's entirely beside the point.
i just think that if the film makers want to base the movie off of a specific storyline, then they should follow it a bit more closely. it's not necessarily because, "that's the way it is," but more because that's the way it was meant to be. that's the way it was originally executed and that's the way the movies should atleast try and portray it. as i said before, i understand that a lot of comic storylines would make no sense at all if turned into real live action films. i know that there have got to be at least a few minor changes to certain things. for instance i love galactus, but a giant dude in a funny hat floating around in space isn't gonna register well w/ the average movie goer. but in the case of the dark phoenix saga in x3, it was as if they took and idea and completely overhauled it into something else. from my - the comic fan's - point of view, that doesn't help the appeal of the movie. i don't get upset at a movie because they've changed a little something, i get upset because they completely warp the idea.
My point is why should they have to follow a storyline closely simply for preservation to the original if the original simply isn't good enough for what the film maker is trying to achieve? There is still the Dark Pheonix in X-Men 3. However, she is different to the Dark Pheonix in the 616 Universe of the comic books.
Personally, I do not understand why people are so attached to certain aspects of a character.
yes, the dark phoenix was still there. but it's not the dark phoenix that had so much success in the 616 universe. why base a movie off of a specific storyline if you're not going to follow it at least a little bit? what sense does that make? the original was obviously successful or they wouldn't want to base a big budget movie on it. kind of a "if it ain't broke..." thing.
it's not really that i'm so much attached to certain aspects of a character, i'm attached to specific storylines. the dark phoenix saga was an amazing storyline for the x-men. one of the best. i understand that most of the aspects of it wouldn't make sense to the average movie goer, but i just don't think it had to be completely changed. all they really left of the dark phoenix was the fact that it was jean grey who went mad.
For those of you that saw the Silver Surfer cartoon that Fox had, I recall Galactus speaking, but I forgot what he sounded like. Anyone remember if that voice actor did a good job? I do remember I stopped watching it after I saw one episode with Thanos and was ready to cried cause they ruined one of my favorite characters.
Because whilst the core idea was good, it is simple fact that it may not translate that well to a different medium - in this case, film. Film isn't just a transfer from a page to a big screen: the medium has got to do many different things to appeal to a much wider and broader audience. More people are willing to see a super-hero film than those willing to buy a super-hero comic.
The position with X3 was that they most likely could not build up the space saga that culminated within the Dark Phoenix, aside from clearer discrepancies within the storyline. Thus they choose for it to manifest in a variable already familiar with cinema audiences - Jean's psychic powers. If you watch X2 it appears that was the way the storyline was heading anyway, with or without Brett Ratner as director.
My whole point is how do you know something isn't "broke" if you don't try and better it, a philosophy much more prevalent in cinema where people are expected quality for their money. Frankly, what I don't understand why people are attacking the core concept when it was the execution that let out. People immediately see this poor execution and translate it to poor conception.
I think it is rather ignorant to assume that some storylines can't be bettered. X3 was an attempt at doing so in a storyline which could not pheasably be translated to the medium in which it was to be presented. In the 616 Universe, Jean Grey "goes mad" because of a space entity. In X3, she goes mad because of her powers. The core concept remains (and thus the idea isn't completely changed), and the film still tried to carry over some of the other elements involved, such as Scott's grief, etc.
Anyway, my whole point is simply this: X3 used the Dark Phoenix saga as much for its auxiliary elements as its core concept. I find it unreasonable to expect the core concept to have survived and been as successful within the X-Men film universe, and thus it would have been necessary to alter it. The new concept they came up with is not necessarily worse than the 616 storyline just because of the high standards of the original - rather it was the execution which let the concept down.
If we can't agree after this, I think we should just agree to disagree.
first of all, i never said that storylines can't be bettered. it's definitely possible for someone to take the phoenix saga and do it better. but that wasn't the case w/ the movie. i do agree that they couldn't do exactly what happened in the comics w/ the movie storyline because it wouldn't translate very well to film. but i also think that if they couldn't do a better job than what they did, it shouldn't have been done. as i said before, if it ain't broke don't fix it. it was fine the way it was and they didn't make it any better, so they shouldn't have even touched it. and besides... i hated almost every aspect of that movie, so i might be a bit biased.
but i do think we should probably agree to disagree on this one.
Just saw the midnight showing of FF4. I have to say that this was one of the best blockbuster movies to come out this summer so far. It was short, loud and fun. The only thing I didn't like was the potrayal of Galatus. I will leave it at that until more reviews come in.
I too thought the ending was a little meh. However, having never read the comics, i think Galactus actually was pretty good. However, like i said, I have never read the comics. However, the scene in the end where doom creates that spear and throws it at SS, and sue creates forcefield which deflects it to herself was a bit... lame, really.

Just saw it. Overall, I liked it beter than the last one.
On Galactus: I imagine they will flesh him out more in the Surfer movie upcoming.
watch the effects for Galactus closely. First, his silohuette against the planet has the familiar shape. Second, when Surfer is within him, you see the familiar some subtle hints of his shape. I think they are showing us hints so we will realize we will see the real full Galactus in the Surfer movie. Galactus is overall such a minor part of this movie that having him as a cloud is more than fine, when you know he will be seen again
My original beef with this movie was the need they seemed to have to make Doom flesh again. It almost felt like they were trying to undo what they did in the first, to make fans happy or something. However, Doom actually spends alot of the movie still metalic. Though the change to flesh is done in a somewhat contrived way, it fits the conventions already set in the movie with Surfer's abilities. It actually works out ok, and I enjoyed it. It is nice to see Doom using a suit with Gadgets too. I just really hate the actor. His voice does not fit Doom at all. They should at least change it when he is Doom, like they do with Thing.
As for the ending. It also will likely make more sense after the Surfer movie.
I liked it quite a bit. It wasn't very comic-y but I enjoyed it as an explode-a-fest.
I didn't approve of the way they portrayed Galactus, since I love the "big man in space with a purple helmet" look, but that's just me. I did love the Surfer though. Whoever that actor was, they did it damn well. I can only hope the Surfer movie is with that actor.!
Yeah after seeing the lackluster reviews for this I am definitly waiting for DVD.
There is allready 2-3 movies I have to see this month that have come out and haven't.

While thats not necessarily related just wanted to post that. I think the movie would be mildly entertaining but the first one really turned me off to the series.
It is by far one of the worst comic book movies these days. Hulk and Ghost Rider beat it out in horribleness but at least Hulk has a new actor for the next one though so that should help.
Eric Bana couldn't act his way out of a paper bag but Edward Norton as the hulk that could work.
