I've been toying with the idea of starting a thread on musical theatre for some time now, but I'm a very lazy person and never got around to it.
But, no longer! Now, I'm taking action!
So, watch it fail horribly, as I'm sure these boards don't really have a vast percentage of musical fans. Still, perhaps I'd be surprised.
Anyway, I'm most familiar with the works of Stephen Sondheim, but feel free to talk about any and all musical theatre that catches your fancy. I just may not be able to contribute if it's out of my mien.
You're right, a lot of people on these boards either don't appreciate musical theatre or opera (the highest form of professional singing), but I'm glad you made a topic on it anyway. For those of us that do appreciate musical theatre and opera, there's a lot to be said of which ones we like and why.
My personal favorite, at least of now, would have to be Phantom. I know it's a stupid reason, but it was the 2004 movie that really got me into it. After I watched the movie for about the 12th time and memorized all the songs, I got the opportunity to go see it on Broadway while my chorus was in New York City. The performace was excellent, even if I realized that the movie had some differences from the theatre performance. Unfortunately, that was the only Broadway performance I have seen, but I plan to change that. Other favorites I have are Wicked, Once On This Island, Pippin, Into The Woods, and the aforementioned Tommy. I have been in the productions of high school versions of Once On This Island and Into The Woods, and they are spectacular.
Into the Woods is lovely, especially the OBC. It's fantastically well-written. James Lapine is an excellent librettist.
I've heard a lot of good things about Wicked. I want to rent the book from my library(especially as it's by an author I enjoy), but there's like 23 people on the request list.
