I'm a Christian and I actually work side by side with Muslim co-workers in my job and I gotta say; they're actually very nice and humble people. Heck, I've met my fair share of in-your-face-condescending-Christians but so far, all of the interactions I've had with Muslims and even Aetheists have been very nice, even after they found out I'm a Christian. It's funny and sad at the same time; I actually enjoy hanging out with my non-Christian friends more than the ones I go to church with.
So, I'm just curious; what part of the Koran or Islam do Muslim Terrorists like ISIS follow? What drives them to be the polar opposite of the nice and caring Muslims I've come across?

Being of ANY particular religious or non-religious belief does not preclude you from being obnoxious or a bad person, just the same as having [Insert Any Other Characteristic Here] doesn't preclude from [Insert Any Other Not-Definitively-Contradictory Characteristic Here].

While I think this is true and relevant, I think there is more to this issue. Islamic religious belief and culture isn't just circumstantially related to these affairs- there is a trend currently of Islamic religious belief and culture acting as a force in shaping how terrorists and other radical groups behave, as well as a trend of Islamic religious belief and culture being one of the biggest correlations with terrorists and other radical groups.
I think it's true to say that Islamic religious belief and culture in general is not one of violence and/or oppression, but also that certain major divisions within Islamic religious belief and culture are groups of violence and/or oppression.
I'd compare it to something like the relationship between American culture and gun violence- American culture is not one of gun violence, but it certainly bears a kind of association with it.
We need this kind of nuance when we are dealing with broad sweeping and often not clearly bordered groups of people, events and ideas.
I work with a few Muslims - we talk politics on occasion, and this subject came up a while back.
From memory;
Their take, was that ISIL are not deeply religious at all, it is a sham, they are using Islam as a brainwashing tool to recruit soldiers from across the globe for their war. They told me to observe that ISIL has been killing Muslims of all persuasions to achieve their goals, which directly contradicts any Islamic faith.
FWIW, many of the ISIL soldiers identify as Sunni's, but I don't that is really all that relevant given the history of the middle east.

Whether or not ISIS truly acts in accordance with Islamic doctrine is, to say the least, rather dubious. But ISIS' identity is rooted in a very specific form of Wahhabist Sunni Islam. You could not profess Shi'ite Islam and fight for ISIS. They would not let you, and they'd probably hurt you.
It's sort of like the KKK over here in America. They may not be very good Protestant Christians by any sane standard, but they themselves think they are, and they would be highly unlikely to let an openly Catholic person join up.

I have friends, mostly persians who are Muslim. I recognize their opinions might be biased, but they are certainly more knowledgeable about it than I am.
That is the branch every one of them points out to me.

Life is a beautiful engineer, yet a brutal scientist.
Violence against infidels is actually supported in the quran. All the bad things that people associate with Islam like violence and misogyny are advocated for in the quran.

Same as all the nasty things like people the Westboro Baptist Church use to justify there hatred of gays are in the Holy bible, both testaments. Yet you don't seem to want to tar all Christians with the being homophobic *****bags but are happy to that for Muslims for some reason.

This is a very simplistic little comic about ISIL I found that explains a few things. I showed it to my teenage son who was curious;
