[previous title: Religion is mocking/aping Magic: the Gathering]
I just found ad add on Craigslist for an individual who has spoofed Magic (and I don't mean "spoof" as in a humorous way) by making it their own version, but w/ heavy Christian undertones.
I have nothing against Christianity (I myself am Jewish), but Magic is a fantasy game. Sure, it has clerics, demons/devils, temples, angels, paladins and unholy churches, but they have no real world connections.
Why then do this?
Also, adding the name "Magic" to sell/play-test the product may be a copyright infringement.
What are your thoughts? Please play nice; I know topics on religion and what is right/wrong can get heavy. But please be respectful of others beliefs.
Not surprised - seems with crazes - particularly ones that draw heat from religious organizations - this kind of thing will happen at some point or another.
Eh, takes a proven game concept changes flavor expects to not get sued for copyright infringement because it's a religious game? Good luck with that. If he's just testing it so he can take it for kids to play at sunday school or something then great for them but if it's some pre sale test then enjoy the lawsuits.
This is the most hilarious thing on the Internet I've seen today. If Cockatrice can get a C&D letter, this should have gotten one by now.
Well, this is pretty much hot off the press. The date it was posted was May 28th, about 6 days ago. And since I found it today, it has been online ofr 6 days w/o being forced off of CL.
I don't see what there is to debate about. He probably just got his hands on MSE for the first time, made a bunch of cards based on the Bible, and now thinks he can cash out. When I first joined MtGS occasionally new people over at the Custom Card Creation got that idea sometimes. They thought they could make a set and sell it to wizards or market it themselves.
Anyway, that's my guess, it's just a Bible based custom set made using MSE(likely filled with typos, cards that don't work, and over-powered bull****).

I'm not religious in the slightest, but I sort of want to help out just so I can design the cards.

Quote from Wikipedia »
Redemption was first published in 1995 by Cactus Game Design[1] and its creator, Rob Anderson, continues to develop and produce the game and is the final authority on rulings.
...it still exists? WOW!
Quote from Wikipedia »
Additionally, recent final releases of several long-running trading card games, including Lord of the Rings [3] and Star Trek,[4] makes Redemption the oldest trading card game in consistent production, aside from Magic: The Gathering.
That's actually amazing. I thought this game died out long ago.
"A rich man thinks all other people are rich, and an intelligent man thinks all other people are similarly gifted. Both are always terribly shocked when they discover the truth of the world. You, my dear brother, are a pious man." - Strahd von Zarovich
I doubt there could be a more ignorant title for this thread. It sounds like the person just wants a tcg tailored to his interests. There's nothing wrong with that. Nothing about the ad is "mocking" or "aping" magic. And religion isn't doing anything. It's one person. ffs.
And I might actually play that redemption game if I had some cards.
There are multiple connotations associated with words. "mocking" doesn't necessarily mean to make fun off. It is being used here to mean to copy or mimic (hence why I added "/aping").
To straight out claim that I am ignorant is a crass, ignorant thing to say. Judging the overall language I used, is it not apparent that I am not spooking or intentionally slurring the Craigslist ad?
To squash any negative associations that the title gives, I'll change it so others, such as yourself, do not dive into a discussion and immediately sling mud.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
Because it involves religion, and somewhere down the line, this thread will erupt into a debate. The topic of religion is usually a ticking time bomb.
I'm pretty sure its more about stupidity than religion. Religious people tend to not defend stupid people that just happen to be religious.
The fact that it's a variant of Magic with almost an identical name is the point, not that it's a religious variant.
Y'know, I find a place where religion (Christianity) and Magic meat and all you can do is be a pest? If you have nothing constructive to add, then take a hike.
You'd think ofter 10,000+ posts, you'd get the idea that flaming is frowned upon. And so is trolling for that matter.
