What reason is there to suspect that there is a single thing that is the root of all evil? Examination has showed us that there are as many different causes for the woes of the world as there are woes in the first place.

A limit of time is fixed for thee
Which if thou dost not use for clearing away the clouds from thy mind
It will go and thou wilt go, never to return.
Since its any and all of greed, competition, jealousy, selfishness, envy, and probably a dozen other things. I would have to say existing. Animals by nature are not evil, they do things for survival. Humans on the other hand will torture others for pleasure. destroy other humans for pleasure, kill for pleasure.
But since humans are (considered by most to be) the only fully morally-aware creatures that we know of, and therefore the only possible loci of evil -- (except possibly God and his minions, if you are into that sort of thing) -- "humanity creates evil" is barely more than tautological. You aren't casting any light on the nature of evil by saying that.

If you are religious, and believe God created all beings, would you agree only humans are evil and can be evil? I have never know an animal to be evil (outside of movies).
Like I mentioned above, there is no one thing that causes someone to be considered evil. it can be any of them individually or a combination of any or all of them.
If we look back at societies prior to the advent of a currency system, there were still evil people. So money or greed can be a cause of evil but not the root since evil has been know long before money or greed was invented by humans.

It has been documented that some evil giraffes will eat more leaves than they need in order to starve other good giraffes
Morality that declares evil to exist in the first place. No framework for evil to exist in, no evil.
That old chestnut "Money is the root of all evil" is actually an abridged version of the complete phrase "The love of money is the root of all evil". Selfishness - the desire to put the self above others, heedless of consequences, is certainly responsible for its fair share of wickedness, and arguably contains several of your classic sins. Although, another man whose name eludes me said "If only the wicked did evil, the Lord would return tomorrow."
Attributing any one cause to evil over simplifies the many ways people can be nasty little ****s to each other. I work in retail, and I used to think that some people were the goddamned devil, until I realized there's no way in hell that any self respecting demon could be that petty.
If everyone is of like mind, then functionally evil cannot exist. Whatever people decide is wrong, is wrong and won't be done. If you choose to act in a contrary manner, then you must have a different opinion, however slight it may be.

So in the end being human creates evil.
Bottle-nosed dolphins enjoy killing porpoises for reasons that researchers can't explain. They sure as hell don't eat them afterwards.
Bottle-nosed dolphins also kill sharks for no reason, but at least that could be justified by the claim that sharks sometimes attack them and so they're acting out in revenge against any shark they come across. Racial violence!
Various chimpanzee groups deliberately engage in warfare to enlarge their territory against other chimpanzee groups. Their style of warfare is generally more like those of the ancient Greeks than modern sense of total warfare. Lots of displays and short, brutal bursts of fighting.
Basically, the animals that are generally established as the smartest animals besides humans engage in behavior that humans may consider morally reprehensible.
Cheap answer: The mathematical necessity of replicators.
My answer: The soundness of any decision at all in a sufficiently narrow frame of attention (+ finitary predicament).
War liberates territory/people/feminist-capital-X from incapable magistrates. This is not good or evil, it is just fact.
Instead, then, the root of Evil would be whatever it is that enables Humankind to continue to make the cheap choice, of doing what they've always done, and fight a battle rationalized only on the molecular level yet with dire consequences in the social one, rather than do anything to defend the realm in which is/are experienced suffering and joy.
Earth, basically.
People need the Divine, without bigotry, vanity, simplicity, salvation, or any of that nonsense that just loops back and makes them tools again.

I think it's safe to say if a human being can be evil, a chimp can be as well. They do practice ritual murder and infanticide.

So your stance is in a war, all soldiers are evil? There orders are to kill, and many do. So since they are killing others they are evil?
I dont find any of what has been posted bout animal behavior as 'evil' it would be considered natural behavior. It goes back to humans natural behavior is to kill other threatening humans and for a male to spread their seed to as many women as possible. But as time has passed, humans have stopped killing and use laws, and partnering up has become the norm. That doesnt change our nature though.
I was actually addressing your claims that animals only do things for survival.
If chimpanzee warfare is survival, then is human warfare survival as well? I would agree with that.
I'm not entirely sure how bottle-nosed dolphins intentionally killing porpoises for no clear reason (sport and entertainment really is the only thing researchers can think of) anything less than kill for pleasure?
Though, looking back at your post, I'm not even sure what you mean by evil. Animals are not evil because they do things for their own survival; how human beings have the possibility for evil because they do things that are not necessary for survival?

Since humans are at the top of the food chain, we have no natural enemies. We fight among ourselves. Animals do though have natural enemies that when seen in the wild they fight with them. Its not evil, its their nature. Its something programed into them from birth.
To me evil is going out of your way to create pain and/or discomfort for someone or a group of people.
A soldier on the front line following orders killing someone, is not inherently evil, but it can be done in an evil way, such as bruning them alive or hanging them and letting the elements kill them over time.
Now hunting someone down, tying them up and torturing them and then killing them in a way they suffer, that is evil.
Just because you kill someone/something doesnt make you an evil person.

Because we all know pi is the root of all evil.
