I was so close to praising the left for not rioting yet, but yeah... predictable. People are worried that Trump is going to undermine our democractic institutions but then they go out and act all European and whatnot.
I find it ironic that the person charged with leading us away from our corporate-fascist America happens to be one of the most powerful businessmen in the world... But Democrats looking to point fingers need look no further than their own party. Their short sighted, arrogant insistence on Hillary Clinton cost them this election. We should be looking at President Bernie Sanders. I am just hoping Trump won IN SPITE of his racist, misogynist, authoritarian views. Not BECAUSE of them.
At least the next four years (assuming he, and we, get that long) should be interesting. We are simultaneously watching the collapse of both major political parties. It's a shame Johnson didn't get the 5% he needed to help expedite the process but the fall is coming regardless. Political parties have come and gone as technology has progressed since forever. It's no surprise that the dawning of the digital age has coincided with a huge change in political ideologies. The fact that it has taken this long to catch up is one of the biggest strikes against Democracy as we currently have it, in my opinion.
Glenn Beck of all people had a really insightful interview last night where he said "if this is what the Republican party has become then I want no part of it. I am going to spend the next year searching out the people I disagree with the most, sit down with them, and just listen. I need to do a better job of connecting with those across the table." Seeing a man like Beck come out and say this, and seeing (mostly) understanding and optimistic comments from Hillary supporters gives me hope that we aren't as divided as we may think.
And for all you disenfranchised Dem's out there, building a better life and country has always started at the grass roots level and I believe this has a huge chance to really mobilize that.
I'm still hoping they send a Terminator from the future to deal with the problem before it really starts.
You can't claim to dislike Trump for his hateful rhetoric while simultaneously calling for his assassination and you can't claim to be for democracy while wishing certain states or people couldn't vote. It's Orwell's 2+2=5 philosophy come to life.

Seriously? I'm pretty sure "hoping they'll send a [fictional] Terminator" doesn't count as "calling for his assassination".
Wanting is one thing. Being capable (in all regards) to do is another. It is clear that more than half of his loud promises are practically simply unrealizable, unless he pulls off a magic wand from somewhere. The people who took those promises seriously are in for a HUGE disappointment. Because these things are not done simply by wishing it happen.
At least he was saying it, though. Personally, I don't understand how you can believe someone who is literally Big Business personified is more trustworthy than a career politician when it comes to reigning in big business, but apparently people in the Midwest decided he was. K.
The thing is, though, that Reagan and Dubbya both did this kind of thing. Make promises to the middle class, act like a endearing/entertaining everymen, and then work like the dickens to grind the working class into the dust and wreck the economy. And yet, both those two got 2 terms.
And throughout all of it, the Dems moved right on fiscal issues even while staying left on social issues. The only thing Obama was able to meaningfully do for the white working class was Obamacare, and that was too attenuated for people to realize how helpful it is. Who cares if I can get health care now? Factory's closed, I'm out of work, there's a meth problem in my town, and my echo chamber keeps telling me that it's all the fault of the Democratic Party.

Maybe not when it is Trump, but I am sure the politically correct left would agree if it was said about Hillary.
I get it, he was probably making a joke, but maybe he wasn't. Either way it is a pretty tasteless joke.
So what were Hillary's miscalculations... what did she do wrong?
And why did the media get it so wrong?
Trump actually carried a higher % of the black and hispanic vote than Romney. The black vote is a little less surprising just because he wasn't running against Obama. But the hispanic vote is pretty interesting. I don't think those were big difference makers, but that's quite an accomplishment for a man that is literally Hitler.

her miscalculation was she ignored the rural voters, the ones who said they weren't being included.
trump received the highest rural voter turn out than we've seen in many elections. the rural voter turn out for the first time in a long time squashed the city/urban voter turn out.
her miscalculation was she ignored the rural voters, the ones who said they weren't being included.
No. That's not enough in presidential politics. I think the numbers already point to a huge number of people sitting out of the election. When that happens it doesn't take much for the rural vote to just kind of take over. Her problem was that she was quintessentially unexciting and mistrusted. Her inability to get people to vote for her to care that would normally have done so for an average candidate with her views is why she lost.
Is this perhaps reminiscent of what happened with John Kerry - where there were a lot of "anybody but Bush" votes out there for him but maybe not enough positive energy to get out more purely pro-Kerry votes?
Anyway, thats what you get when you feel it is correct to alienate the majority. Next time, try to talk sense to conservatives instead of insulting then.
Yeah, now y'all have elected an orange demagogue, my days of not taking tories seriously are certainly coming to a middle.
Well this is good for me personally Obamacare was my only issue in this election. I could care less about anything else if I'm being honest. If It was forced onto my companies it would destroy my livelihood and see many people I care about laid off and most likely result in the total liquidation of at least one of the companies my family owns as the extra hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra costs with no profit would have been impossible to manage for some of our small businesses . To everybody who is outraged that they we elected a racist etc etc realize not everyone voted for hate some of us cared about the issues. In my case I was very much aware of exactly what 4 more years of obamacare would have meant for me personally and simply put with that on the line it was a no brainer for me. Thank you to the people who voted and helped at least This guy out and thanks to the people who voted Hillary who lost with grace instead of spewing toxic garbage over the results.
It all starts with people born in the USA calling themselves "America". You are Americans but you are not "America". America is a continent not a country.
Is this perhaps reminiscent of what happened with John Kerry - where there were a lot of "anybody but Bush" votes out there for him but maybe not enough positive energy to get out more purely pro-Kerry votes?
Basically; I think like Kerry & Gore the dems went with a "safe" candidate that towed the line but was totally uninspiring. You've got to run for something. Barack showed us how to do that, and we ****** up.
I'd imagine that if you somehow slotted 2000 Al Gore or 2004 John Kerry into 2016 Hillary's spot, both Gore and Kerry would have won this election vs. Trump. While Gore and Kerry were both uninspiring (IMO, of course), I can't recall too many scandals attached to them. I believe it's the convergence of being uninspiring and the scandals.

We call the country "America."
We call the continents either "The Americas" or "North America" or "South America."
That's what we do. You all go ahead and keep doing your own thing, no one is stopping you. But no one is stopping us, either.
Nothing to do now except keep your eyes peeled for the buses that come to take people away. I'm hoping against all hope that Trump is nothing more than a trained parrot. If he's anywhere in the realm of serious about what he says, this is not going to be over quickly or easily.
Whelp, here's hoping both parties collapse, we get rid of the electoral college, and maybe create an election process that makes one iota of sense.
Won't happen, of course, but I need happy thoughts right now.
What's wrong with the electoral college? Without it, all the power in this country will be concentrated in just a few small places: New York, LA, Chicago, etc.

It doesn't strike you as slightly idiotic that we can elect someone who doesn't have the popular vote?
And obviously in this election, it was close. But theoretically you could win the presidency with like 26% of the popular vote, if things were skewed crazily enough. And that's assuming a 2 party system. Once third parties start taking significant portions of the vote, that percentage gets even lower.
And this winner-takes-all party bull***** is insane. We should have one, middle-of-the-road president who represents the country as much as possible. Not someone who (sort of) represents 51% of the country (not even true, given the electoral system, but let's just say) and absolutely infuriates the other 49%. Which is what would have happened either way.
Screw the parties. Screw the electoral college. All it does it make us more and more partisan and divided. And no one who's ever in power has any motivation to fix any of it.
So what were Hillary's miscalculations... what did she do wrong?

Look at the electoral map. He wiped out Hillary in the Rust Belt.
It's only fitting he won all of the Rust Belt states. Democrats have ignored, and even mocked the white working class at their own peril. This was the one year it finally came back to haunt them in the biggest possible way.
As for why the media "got it so wrong" I'm willing to bet the reason has to do with our own version of the Shy Tory factor.
Canadian here, so obviously I couldn't vote. Just thought I'd post here just to offer a bit of perspective from what I saw on Facebook, as a Canadian
First thing I noticed is that there was way more discussion about The American Election than there was about the Canadian Election last year or whatever, which got more discussion than what I've seen compared to previous elections.
There was quite a bit of outrage when Trump got elected. There was a bit of less negative/neutral discussion about it but quite a bit of outrage, even among Canadians. But I guess we are still affected by your election choice, as we are just north of you. Due to that, I can see Canadians invested in American election results. One thing I found funny was our Canadian Immigration website was down for a bit (I can provide a screen shot later if people wish) when it was becoming clear Trump was gonna win.
at work today, quite a few people were talking about how they feel America is screwed, and we could also be negatively affected.
so to end, I think I'll post a few questions to see what people think:
1-would people be as outraged if Hilary got in?
2-just how bad (if bad at all) will Trump be for America? or are people just over reacting?
3-What kind of impact will this have on Canada, if any?
4-is it fair to assume Bernie would have beaten Trump if he had won the DNC?
1. Probably not.
2. People are overreacting.
3. No clue.
4. Yes.
Maybe Trump was a cosmic balancing effect because you guys have the anti-Trump in Trudeau.
if anything, I'm interested to see the relationship Trudeau and Trump will have over the next few years. I'm pretty sure I saw Stephen Harper (our previous, Conservative PM) congratulate Trump on some form of social media

Example case: Trump has already said he'll gut the EPA and that he thinks climate change is fake, which will likely lead to the US not meeting it's contributions to any climate deal in the future.
This will kill people throughout the world. Like half of the Pacific Islands are already bailing (so if you voted Trump to cut down on immigration, you might have played yourself).
Your job now, as a politically active individual, is to make enough of a nuisance of yourself that Trump's presidency doesn't lead to the complete collapse of pretty much everything.

Apparently Trump (or his business, at least) recognizes some of the effects of climate change as a threat to at least some degree, because they're building a sea wall around Trump's Irish Golf Course.
So probably he's gonna keep screwing over the poor while adapting to climate change.
