Is this animal cruelty and does Groundhog's Day present a problem to the perception for how we participate in this society against Groundhog when we have accurate weather forecasting and real science to give us answers?
Or must we repeat this over and over again for as long as that small Pennsylvanian town persists.

EDIT: That's a lie, I actually have no real idea what Groundhog Day is aside from the movie. Sounds like a weird tradition from the little I've overheard about it.

“Tell me who you walk with, and I'll tell you who you are.” Esmeralda Santiago Art is life itself.
We forcibly remove the genitalia of animals all the time.
But having a domesticated groundhog carried around and presented in a town ceremony is somehow a cause for alarm?
It doesn't need to be a cause for alarm for one to think it shouldn't be done. Animal slaughter and animal castration are both done for good reason, for food and to prevent harm to humans, respectively. Groundhog day though? I'm not seeing it. Yes, it's not as bad in it's negative as the other two cases, but I don't see ANY real positive.
I wouldn't say ban it. I'd say cut government support for it.
I wouldn't say ban it. I'd say cut government support for it.
What government support does it get? Its not a national holiday and it serves as a local festival type tourism event for local governments potentially generating revenue for them. I do not see how it causes any harm at all.

Elected officials attend it with regularity. That's a government promotion.

Yeah, because in Groundhog Day, the groundhog isn't actually being harmed. That'd be a key difference.
but I don't see ANY real positive.
And welcome to America, where you are innocent until proven guilty, and where it's the role of other people to demonstrate why you shouldn't be allowed to do something.
It's Groundhog Day. It's fun and silly. Get over it.

Yeah, because in Groundhog Day, the groundhog isn't actually being harmed. That'd be a key difference.
Except this is untrue. Two have died in incidents related to it, and I doubt the groundhogs are very happy about the whole thing generally. Less harm, but it's still not doing any favors for the groundhogs.

So we should continue to support things simply because they're not exactly bad? I don't care whether it's a matter of importance, or it's a matter of urgency, or whatever the hell, it doesn't mean I'm not going to voice my opinion that I don't support it and I don't think others should. When I say something other than that you can go on about me taking things too seriously.
1. Except this is untrue. Two have died in incidents related to it.
...
2. So we should continue to support things simply because they're not exactly bad?
1. Just a tad misleading. Unless you want to start judging morality on the basis of freak accidents.
2. Uh, yes? If it isn't actually bad, then there nothing wrong with supporting it. Making this about some sort of animal rights crusade is frankly ridiculous.

Is it bad to walk in circles for a minute before going out your front door? Not really
Why aren't you doing it then?
Perhaps because what's simply bad is not the sole determiner of your choices, but also what is most good.
I have no major issue at all with Groundhog day, I have not, am not and will not fight to eliminate it. But, I will voice my opinion that it's dumb, ultimately pointless and unpleasant for the groundhogs. There's better things for people to do with time and money than harassing rodents in what is essentially a primitive superstitious ritual.

No one's saying you have to support them.

Again, it's fun and silly. If it's not your cup of tea, whatever. To each his own.

So what's your point?

So in the history of this ceremony, at least since 1886, you can cite two accidents in which the groundhog was harmed.
None of this is grounds to proclaim this ceremony is harmful to the groundhogs.
So what's your point?
What is your point? You are trying to make the case that people shouldn't support this holiday, and have this strange supposition that Groundhog Day needs to somehow justify itself to you. It's a silly, fun ceremony that serves as a local oddity. If you don't like it, that's fine, no one's forcing you to like it or partake in it. But people do like it, and are partaking in it. You seem to take issue with this. Why?

Two? I read one, which led to the animal's death, and the following year measures were put in place to prevent the same accident from occurring. The other incidents are either a person getting bitten by the animal, or the city illegally using a wild animal.

Ah, good call, I misread a particular instance as a groundhog having fallen another time.
Ok, so we have one instance of a groundhog which resulted by accident when he was dropped after biting the person holding him. In the history of Groundhog Day, which has been taking place for at least 127 years. So yeah, I would say "the groundhogs aren't being harmed" is a valid statement to make about Groundhog Day, and to point out the one accidental fatality in the history of the event is really reaching for a reason to get people to find Groundhog Day objectionable.
No, not really serious. It is the appearance of being serious that gives credibility to the feeling of wanting to debate out of different emotional stimuli, hence the marketing approach to the introduction when it came to specific words used in the copy. But it was a good debate topic, none the less. It's things like when you question them creates a learning experience. People actually learned about Groundhog's Day history.

Cool. Something I agree with Highroller on.
A bit of a stretch to call holding up a pet ground hog to a crowd once a year animal cruelty.

Really, I think the Groundhog is no worse off than any other sort of pet.
