I'm honestly a little surprised there isn't a thread about this yet, but what are people's impressions of Donald Trump? Is this run actually serious? Is his performance sustainable? Can he feasibly win the nomination or the presidency? What are the implications of his run and his success if we deem it possible?

The implication is that the media has an incentive to make people read their pieces and they start covering elections so far before anything substantive occurs that almost anyone can get media coverage if they are sufficiently rich and willing to be controversial.

I primarily play limited, so most of my spoiler season comments view cards through that lens.
Hopefully he will never find himself in any government position. That being said, I feel like if he were president, there would be a reality show taking place inside the White House.
I like him because he isn't a cookie cutter politician (compared to the other candidates on both sides). This is the most fun I've had watching politics ever.
I have to imagine if it ends up Trump vs. Hillary the election will have record low turnout, since they're both tremendously despised by large swaths of the voting American public.
I'm honestly a little surprised there isn't a thread about this yet, but what are people's impressions of Donald Trump? Is this run actually serious?
He seems entirely serious, yes.
Is his performance sustainable?
Depends on what you mean by "his performance." Donald Trump is perfectly capable of sustaining his Donald persona for a long, long time.
His performance in the polls? Probably not.
Can he feasibly win the nomination or the presidency?
Presidency? No. Nomination? Not the Republican nomination, but he can still nominate himself under a third party.
Remember that Donald Trump is placing high because he's one of many candidates competing for the candidacy. This is a very open race. For instance, a CNN poll in Iowa had Trump in the lead at 17%. Recognize that's 83% of people who didn't choose Trump in the poll and all of a sudden Trump's position as frontrunner doesn't seem so great a lead - though even that is positively baffling.
Hasn't he already stated that if he doesn't get the official Republican nomination he is going to run any way as an independent?
One other thing to consider is his name recognition. Even over here in the UK he is getting some coverage for the stunts that he is doing and alot of that is probably because of the apprentice TV show.
Of the rest of the candidates I can only confidently name 1 other and that is Jeb Bush. Who appears to be the stereotypical cookie cutter politician that the public doesn't seem to like with a side order of dynasty building to top it all off.

He's only leading right now because all the party-line Republicans are splitting the rest of the vote 12 different ways. Once a few of them drop out, the remaining votes will consolidate, very few of those votes will move to Trump, and he will fall back.
In the meantime though I find it incredibly entertaining watching him beat them at their own game. They've trained their base to respond to exactly these kinds of rhetoric and theatrics and now it's come around to bite them in the butt because someone is putting on a better show than they are.
I believe he won't win the election (even if he runs under the GOP) because the independent voters will likely not favor him or even actively be against him. If he somehow wins the nomination democrats can rejoice I think.

Honestly, I kinda like the fact that Trump has high poll numbers only because the idea of him having the highest poll numbers is entertaining to me.
He's polling well nationally, but he's not polling well in the states that have the first Primaries, which means he has an incredibly low percent chance to actually get the nomination.
I'm fairly certain that everything he's doing is part of a ploy to make the rest of the party look sane, rational, and balanced in comparison. He's previously come out as being closer to a Democrat than a Republican, and cited that the Republicans were too extreme for his tastes, so suddenly appearing as a super-extreme Republican is both uncharacteristic and, quite literally, unbelievable.
I do hope that he'll run as an independent when he does not get the Primary nomination, so that he can draw away some percentage of the Republican voter base and reduce their chances of actually getting elected.
If he were to get the Primary nomination, I don't think he could possibly win against any of the viable Democratic candidates (Clinton, Biden, or Sanders), and everything media will be absolutely unbearable for basically the entirety of 2016 (though, there's a decent chance it will be miserable anyways).
If, for some ungodly reason, he were to make it to the Presidency, it would be an unmitigated disaster. The man has bankrupted multiple businesses and repeatedly demonstrated that he doesn't understand economics in the real world, and that he's more than willing to leave everyone else to clean up his messes. I don't think, as some suggest, that he would be so contrary to the system that it would force some kind of massive shift. I think he'd just cause serious and lasting damage to the economic and social stability of the country.

People know his name regardless of if they know any of the nominees or what they stand for.
He does well on camera. He knows the ins and outs of public speaking.
He seems fairly straight forward to be honest. I guess that is good and bad.
Cons
His past history is not in politics.
He carries baggage with being famous. They hit this one fairly well when they asked about his opinion of women and he played it off with a Rosie O'Donnell joke. He really skirted this issue for now but I am sure it will come back.
His comment that he is going to run regardless is not really helpful. Will he change his tune if he is no longer a republican candidate or will he stick to his guns and drag the Republican candidate down.
To be honest, as it stands I am more against him being the Republican candidate right now. At the same time I am sort of afraid of him backstabbing the party with an independent run. Nobody runs as an independent expecting to win so why do it at all? I am a bit afraid that we are going to have Trump vs Clinton and that's like choosing your poison to be honest. I cant remember any names offhand but the female republican candidate seems promising so far and there were one to two of the other male candidates I liked their responses for but their names escape me right now.
EDIT: one thing I will say for Trump is that his comments that he is a successful business man is very correct. I would be interested to hear more about what his plans to run the country's money correctly would be. I feel like he has a good angle here but I also don't feel like I have heard more on this yet from him other than vagueness "im a business man".

Does anyone know what Trump's actual financial situation is right now? I've been hearing accusations that he makes most of his money these days by being a celebrity and his real estate business is actually in shambles.
Why do I get this "I'm Vegeta the Prince of All Saiyans" vibe from him? The first, and foremost conspiracy point is that I feel he might want Hilary to win and he is running to just help her out. However, I feel that the real main reason is that he might run as a principle candidate. He knows he won't, but in the past he has complained about the Chinese manipulation of the renminbi. So with some of what he says does add up to political interviews in the past, so I do feel he is being consistent.
If he were to be elected, I feel he would be a rather mediocre president and probably be socially liberal and tax liberal. He hates mark to market, and he was damaged by the 1980's tax changes in real estate like many other brokers. His ego would probably chasten the GoP a bit, since we would finally get the "real candidate" we deserve when it comes down to how politics have played out as the party of no for the last few years.
I agree that the HP CEO might give Hilary a real run, if she actually got some screen time. Everyone else is uninteresting to me, for the most part. But I would like to see someone new, but Clinton is the inevitable. I do see Clinton 2016.

Life is a beautiful engineer, yet a brutal scientist.
Carly Fiona? Fiorina? Or was her first name Carla? I know it's the internet and I could easily look this up, but is she really a real candidate? Sure, she's better than most of the rest of the lot, but she couldn't even make top 10 of the current Republican field.
I'd say he's more of a Frieza. Vegeta has always been about personal dominance, being the best. Frieza is about dominance over others and not caring what it takes to accomplish that.
Keep in mind I'm not versed in politics at all. Just speaking from the view of the average dude.
So far I like him. Mainly because he[s different from all the other candidates. I mean if you took all the candidates from this, last and the election before that and played sound bites of them to me I couldn't tell you who was who. They give me the vibe they're all reciting some invisible script I can't see. Really if I can't tell the difference from between them I have no reason to believe electing any of them would make a huge difference to the way the country's going. Donald IMO would shake the system up for better or worse (probably worse).
Donald's view of not always being politically correct also appeals to me. This might sound weird, but he just gives off the vibe of being a "alpha male", who gives no craps what you think, he's going to stick to his guns. I think that's also good, to have someone with a backbone, since the US seems to always be dragged into whatever because of their commitments to xyz country.
Being rich also him harder to sway by money(assuming he is as rich as he says).

I very sincerely hope that this is not the opinion of the "average dude."

Hell, if we're just going by who's in the lead now, Sanders is ahead of Clinton.
I have to imagine if it ends up Trump vs. Hillary the election will have record low turnout, since they're both tremendously despised by large swaths of the voting American public.
I personally want to see a Trump vs. Sanders general. That would not only be hilarious, but it would also make Sanders win easily.

Fiorina's qualifications for running are that she was a CEO once who crashed her company into the ground. That is even less qualified for political office than Trump.
Donald Trump is like the GOP version of Bernie Sanders. He is a populist, first and foremost. That's why he gets so much attention and praise from primary voters. Trump's run for president and the reaction he has been getting has shown that the GOP is on the brink of civil war. There is a clear divide between beltway/establishment Republicans and the average Joe with no Washington connections that loyally votes for the GOP each election cycle for better or for worse. The economy has been stagnant ever since the financial crisis, and that hasn't made things any better for those average Joes. Combine this with establishment Republicans offering no real opposition to the Obama administration and it results in voters taking their anger out on the only other possible choice they can think of that could shake things up for better or for worse. Many of the people I know who support Trump really only want someone who is not a career politician and who isn't politically correct.
I personally want to see a Trump vs. Sanders general. That would not only be hilarious, but it would also make Sanders win easily.
Actually I'd say Trump would win that contest. Some of the Trump v Sanders polls I've looked at have Sanders winning fairly narrowly it but when push comes to shove I would have my money on Trump. The US is not Scandinavia. You seriously underestimate how many people would thumb their nose towards the American version of Olof Palme.

Sanders is a socialist. Between those two, the loser would be America.
If Sanders won and could deliver on his campaign promises (which admittedly is hard for any president without control of congress), America would be far better off. Raised minimum wage. Equal pay for men and women. Improved infrastructure. Single-payer healthcare. Free public college for 4 years. More support for veterans. Reduced income-inequality. No more losing jobs overseas. This is what America needs. It's just a matter of him getting ellected and getting an agreeable congress.
