Since then, officials have walked a thin line, making forceful denunciations of anti-Semitism while taking care not to offend a Muslim community estimated at 5 million. France is home to about 600,000 Jews.
This is sickening. Refusing to denounce an act of hatred just to preserve your political base? Disgusting.
What do you think?

I don't understand the purpose of gimmick accounts.
I don't think it's just to preserve a political base. It's to prevent riots like those that resulted from those two kids getting electrocuted last year.
Preventing riots is a worthwhile goal, of course, but not one which should be pursued by appeasing the potential rioters for no other good reason.

I think it just has more to do with the fact that the Jews don't seem to be as eager to riot, burn buildings/flags and murder random innocent people for no apparent reason.
Appeasing violent maniacs, ah le old French tradition never changes!
Probably off tangent, but this seems good a time as any. The proposed wall that would encircle and "protect" Israel from its neighbors could be the most advanced, strongest, and solid wall in the entire world but it still won't stop or end the violence there. Israelites will merely be targeted once they leave the country for vacations, business, etc. It isn't a true answer to that particular problem.

You're obviously an ignorant conservative. I blame your hill-billy Mom and Dad.
This kind of stuff makes me really discouraged. Slowly spreading racism in a civilized country? France and Germany have always had antisemetic roots, but the only difference Germany has a much stronger slap in the face (ie getting destroyed in WWII) than France ever has had for being antisemetic. I commend the anit-racism riots and I'm glad there are still alot of decent people in France.
Even as a Jew, I find it kinda offensive towards Muslims (as short-sighted as their unwarranted hatred towards Jews are) that the government trumps up a Jewish death, while when the Muslim immigrants riot, they blame it on rap music.

Actually, up until Hitler took over the government, Germany was a pretty good place to be a Jew. Compare it to Imperial Russia (not the Soviet Union, as a lot of high-ranking Bolsheviks were Jewish) or the Kingdom of Poland, and Germany doesn't look too bad by comparison.
Until the Nazis, of course.

The Jews don't believe that they will go to heaven if they slay non-Jews who discriminate against them, so I think a Jewish riot is a long way off. Also, they are outnumbered in almost every country they inhabit, because they started with smaller numbers and are experiencing what all organized religion is seeing, a drift of the young away from religious adherence and identity. As a reasult they are greatly outnumbered and viewed as causing a lot of their own problems getting along with other people.
Maybe the Jews would fare better worldwide if they actively sought to watch each others' backs and raised a little hell, I don't honestly know.
@Prizm: There has never really been a "good" time to be a Jew. All things being relative, of course germany's major cities were once more lenient than say, Austria, which was more lenient than Russia. But all kinds of covert bias and prejudices shaped the lives and careers of the Jews living in those places.
the other day i saw the movie munich (it was released in my country about a month ago), and i couldn't watch it complete, it is the best piece of political propaganda i have ever seen in my life.
i don't have anything against the jews, but they always want to appear, as i saw in a t-shirt at miami, as "why does crap always happen to us?"
in the movie, they say they have the right to rack up a lot of travel miles just to take revenge of their athletes. the athletes were martirs, they shouldn't have died, but if in the us the afroamerican killed one white person for every afroamerican killed by a white, it would be civil war.
they don't deserve their treatment, but the palestinian guys are reacting in a way most of us would react. let me explain: if the government came knocking at your door with a homeless guy and said "we're giving him half of your home because he doesn't have a home" what would you do?
i think that the world shouldn't forget the holocaust, but what the jews are doing is that they are using it for a justification to everything, and if it isn't a justification, they use it to show the world that they're sick of being the scapegoats of everyone. i happen to agree with the fact that they have the right to protest, but they are turning something that was terrible to something they use everytime something happens to them
i'm part of a minority, i'm a mexican, but i wouldn't (and i know a lot of friends that think like me) take revenge of my fellow countrymen by killing people of other places.
antisemitism is bad, but after all of this, do the jews have right to complain if they are in a position in which they (as we catholics say) throw the stone and hide the hand?
i don't intend to be racist, and if someone is offended, i beg that person forgives me

random, useless knowledge:
if we could line up every person that lives in china, and try to reach the last one walking, we would never be able to do it, because of it's demographic growth would get bigger and bigger and we could not be able to reach the end
I'm not going to say that it is right or wrong that ISRAEL (not JEWS) decided to kill thoes who killed them. I am not debating wether there is an absolute truth that should have been the deciding factor in Israel's decision.
I will however defend what they did.
Israelis live in constant fear of death. Every bus may have a bomb. Every shop may be the last one you visit. At the WORLD OLYMPICS though, a country should not have to deal with such threats.
Furthermore, when 11 citizens are murdered, does a country not have the right to exact justice? If someone coordinated the murder of someone you loved, would you not want that person dead?
The fact that innocents were killed in the retaliation process is tremendously saddening. But think about how many more bombings could have been coordinated. Notice that the number of bombings in Israel has decreased since the Israeli Army took out a number of Palestinian leaders.
It was something that, in my oppinion, had to be done.
Back to the origional topic, however.
Some Muslim students, for instance, have refused to attend classes on the Holocaust.
This does not perturb me as much.
Some muslims, based on RELIGIOUS beliefs, deny the Holocaust. They are 100% wrong in doing so, but as long as they do not hurt anyone, it seems fine to me.
It would make me feel better however if they did attend, so they would perhaps learn from the past....

This is lamentable, and unfortunatly, politicaly sane. 5 Million. Angry. Rioting. It would be suicide to provoke. The politicians in France have some major problems.

Well, I won't say you're wrong, because without those covert biases and prejudices, Hitler probably wouldn't have come to power.
So let me rephrase that as pre-Third Reich Germany was a better place to be a Jew than most of the neighboring countries were.
