Well, the era of Big Brother in America might finally be over. The Senate could not get over the filibuster by Democrats and can't renew the Patriot Act by Christmas. I, for one, am glad that a knee-jerk reaction towards terrorism in the wake of 9/11 was quashed. What do the rest of you think? And probably more importantly (since there will probably be near uniformity on the first question), do you think that the filibuster was justified?
Edit: D'oh! I meant that certain provisions were defeated, and not the entire act itself. Thanks Senori.
I'm of the understanding that these are only specific sections of the Act, and that several were extended a few months ago?
It's unlikely to stay fillibustered forever.

Frist will push hard for the nuclear option, as they call it, and Senate Democrats will stop their filibuster before the Republicans use it, or the Republicans will use it and stop the filibuster that way. The filibuster will be broken one way or another, unless the Dems can stall until the end of the month.

I don't think even Frist will call for the end of the fillibuster totally.

I kind of agree with both of you there. I'm with Prizm because yes, he has called for it before and he just might threaten it now. But I agree with Senori because if he voids the filibuster, then he's screwing his own party over when his party is in the minority, and the way things are going for the Republican Party now, that might occur in the 2006 elections. If Frist is shrewd, then he won't call for it. If he wants a short-term cure, then he'll call for its demise. Only time will tell....

This is good news, but I doubt that "PATRIOT" will die. I think it will just keep growing. There isn't enough objection to it, cause we're all too busy eating our mayo sandwiches, watching NASCAR and waving our flags. Yipee!
Good, I hope the provisions stay defeated. I've had a lot of problems with the Patriot Act since it was passed, all of them on libertarian grounds. I appreciate the sentiment of wanting to identify terrorist threats before they become legit threats, but spying on your own people isn't the way to catch terrorists. It's possible to expand the powers of law enforcement enough to enable them to combat terrorism without trampling all over everyone else's rights in the process.
After reading this thread's title, I was hoping that the Patriot Act were really gone. The title is definately misleading. It is nice to hear that parts of it could possibly be defeated though.
I am glad that one of my senators (Sununu) was one of the republicans to defect and join the democrats' fillibuster against the Patriot Act.

random, useless knowledge:
if we could line up every person that lives in china, and try to reach the last one walking, we would never be able to do it, because of it's demographic growth would get bigger and bigger and we could not be able to reach the end

Supposedly, it aims to lessen the barriers between law enforcement and intelligence agencies. It infringes on people's civil liberties, which is why the act is so controversial.
thanks wombat, but don't they do that always without you knowing it? in mexico it happens, no one knows when, but we're aware it happens, that's why we speak usually on msn messenger

It will most likely not die on the 31th, we already have the 8 Republicans who were on the filibustering(if that's the right spelling) side switch sides on the ground that parts of the act would be up for change next year. Bush only needs a small handful(4 or so) to counter the filibuster.
Congress wants to get home for Christmas. You gotta realize that. And having Bush try to coax Republicans isn't going to work that well, since they're already pissed at him.

I think it was more like 6 weeks that the house voted for. Either way, it doesn't really matter. Now, what I'm wondering is.. where are all the beloved Democrats that supposedly care about our civil liberties? They should just reject the whole thing out right instead of making a compromise. They're either spineless or apathetic.
They're both. They've been brought down ever since 9/11. Like you said, ljoss, you see no difference between Dems and Republicans. I guess you're right.

Absolutely. I hate to stress the point but I feel I need to in this case. People are being completely manipulated by the Democratic party. They think they can fool us all by pretending like they are a genuine alternative to the GOP.
People voted Democrat in 2004, for example, because they were against the war. Why? The Democrats were largely in favor of the war.
People voted Democrat in 2004, for example, because they were against PATRIOT. Why? The Democrats were largely in favor of PATRIOT.
People voted Democrat in 2004, for example, because they were afraid of religious fundamentalism. Why? The Democrats are still attempting to appease the zealots as we speak.
It goes on and on.
edit:
And just so we're clear, I'm not trying to plug my political beliefs here. Honestly, if you are a true Democrat you should probably start voting Green. For the most part, they are in real life what people think the Dems are.
Well, voting against the Patriot Act right after 9/11 is political suicide. Now it is safe for Dems to challenge some of its provisions.
The people are much of the problem, not the parties who must appease to them in order to win. The people knee-jerk react to things and want them, and then realize how bad parts of it where after a few years, then vote for however presents a "alternative".
Whether the Dems origiionally fully supported the act, honestly, or whether is was to avoid political suicide at the time, I don't know. It was likely a mixture of both.

Democrats not Republicans.

No, some Republicans aren't happy with him, either.
And yes, it was approved for six more months, not just three. This makes me a sad panda...
