This thread is for the discussion of my latest article, Cranial Insertion: You Have a Choice. We would be grateful if you would let us know what you think, but please keep your comments on topic.
Q: Will my Cairn Wanderer have protection from all colors if Pristine Angel is in my graveyard?
A: The answer is...
A: Yes, since the Angel is not tapped in your graveyard.
B: No, since the Angel is neither tapped nor untapped in your graveyard.
C: Yes, since the default is for it to have protection.
D: No, since the ability granting protection doesn't apply in the graveyard.
E: Yes, as long as your graveyard is perpendicular to your other untapped permanents.
Oh? I untap with my Djinn in play? Then I'll cast High Tide 5 times, let the copies resolve, cast Remand 3 times, the first and second targetting the original High Tide, and the third targetting the first Remand. After the stack empties, I'll cast a Turnabout with 1 replicate, and triple-remand again. Net Effect: Draw 4 cards, Islands all produce 4 extra blue, lands untapped. Repeat until I draw Vision Charm and proceed to deck several hundred players.
Forgotten Ancient states:
At the beginning of your upkeep, you may move any number of +1/+1 counters from Forgotten Ancient onto other creatures.
Thus, you don't need to move all 17 counters once you have them ready.
Your answer completely ignored the fact that Everlasting Torment doesn't let players gain life.
Yup, this is a true thing. For the sake of the quiz article being useful in the future, I'm going to go in and change that one rather than wait around for next week to fix.

The Angel is neither tapped nor untapped while in your graveyard, since only permanents have status such as tapped/untapped, flipped/unflipped, and face-up/face-down. But the real issue that the ability simply doesn't work in the graveyard. It's not a characteristic-defining ability since it's conditional, and those are the only abilities that function in the graveyard without specifically saying so.
The way you've phrased this seems to erroneously imply that abilities which do not function in the graveyard are not selected for by Cairn Wanderer. This is, of course, imprecise, since First Strike doesn't function in the graveyard either.
I would rephrase this as follows:
The Angel is neither tapped nor untapped while in your graveyard, since only permanents have status such as tapped/untapped, flipped/unflipped, and face-up/face-down. But the real issue that the conditional ability simply doesn't work in the graveyard, and the Angel therefore cannot have any Protection abilities for Cairn Wanderer to steal. It's not a characteristic-defining ability since it's conditional, and those are the only abilities that function in the graveyard without specifically saying so. Cairn Wanderer is looking specifically for non-conditional instances of various keywords, so unless you can find a way to make characteristic-defining abilities grant keywords, no conditional abilities from the graveyard will be copied.
The ability which grants protection does not apply in the graveyard; that's what matters. It's not a "conditional keyword," which has zero meaning. And as a fun aside: by definition, a CDA can't grant a keyword (it can only set subtype, color, power, and toughness).

(OK, OK, I also didn't know the answer to one of the banding questions but was able to deduce it from the range of options offered. Generic multiple choice skills FTW! :D)

I screwed up the banding questions (yea, that's right. Like everyone* else did. Stop looking at me.) and that mulligan one, like bat did. Pretty humorous, Moko, and quite an enjoyable one to boot.
*Okay, so there are people who know how banding works. Oldcat defines banding as old.
If a creature band lasts until the end of combat then shouldnt this band still be there?
The player stated that he blocked first then killed the cathedral, at this point shouldnt the creatures have already banded?
They have already banded and they're still in a band. The problem is that they don't have the bands with others ability anymore, which is the rule that modifies how combat damage is assigned.
Quote from Comp Rule »
502.11c If an attacking creature is blocked by at least two creatures with the same “bands with other [quality]” ability, the defending player chooses how the attacking creature’s damage is assigned. Similarly, if a blocking creature blocks at least two attacking creatures with the same “bands with other [quality]” ability, the attacking player chooses how the blocking creature’s damage is assigned.
Being in a band is not the same thing as having the banding (or bands with other) ability.
The 'thopter can end up with any even number of counters between 0 and 34. Just follow all the steps to get 17 counters on the one Forgotten Ancient, then move between 0 and 17 counters onto the 'thopter and double them. Ta-da.
The way you've phrased this seems to erroneously imply that abilities which do not function in the graveyard are not selected for by Cairn Wanderer. This is, of course, imprecise, since First Strike doesn't function in the graveyard either.
I would rephrase this as follows:
Dude. Cairn Wanderer would just be silly if conditional abilities enabled it. I mean I discard a Cairn Wanderer. I play a different Cairn Wanderer and look at everything it has... Sure it is imprecise but it kinda misses a bit of the big picture.
I still say B is a valid answer.

How should I know? This never happens on MtGO!
