Forgive me for the question which has nothing to do with strategy, but I see that the prerelease giveaway card on MTGO is going to be foil Emrakul.
Do those with an MTGO history think this will be worth anything? Or, simply due to the number of prerelease participants, will it be like a few tickets only?
I haven't played in online prereleases so far, and wasn't planning to play in this one, but if this card will be sellable for like 10 tickets or something, it seems worth it.
well, I probably still won't due to the large chunk of time needed, but I'm still curious.
Well it's prerelease only so that helps it. Ajani promos were very common but held their price for the most part, but ajani is a much stronger card.
I don't see the card being worth much, it's a niche card for 1-2 decks in select formats as a 1-2 of, and it may not even be better than progenitus or iona.
Prereleases are rarely worth it, I don't see emrakul being worth much. My guess is ~5 tix in the long run.
No, the giveaway is not a foil Emrakul - that's what you win for a 3-1 or better finish.
5 tix is generous even for the foil one, I suspect. I doubt you'll sell one of them for much more than 3 tix.
Prereleases online remain terrible, terrible value. WotC should be ashamed.

In my experience all the card buying bots don't even check your promo cards when they search your collection for cards they want. You'd have to specifically search out one that does and/or find an actual human to sell the card to. I couldn't speculate on its value though.
It's more that people always overvalue removal. Really, if they make a card ":symb:: Sorcery: As an additional cost, get F'd in the A. Destroy target creature." people will say "removal is removal" and first-pick it.
Yeah, the prereleases suck unless you like playing Sealed, but I don't know if it is cheaper to play Sealed outside of a prerelease.
Speaking of which, what day will ROE be available to draft online? (I know this may be better suited for the Magic Online forum, but I figured it was relatively on-topic.)
A good website for online card value is MTGOTraders.com. They don't have prices up for RoE yet (everything is listed at $0.01) but I'm sure they will update it quickly during the online prerelease. I usually keep their site open in another window during an online draft so I can make sure I don't pass any big money.
However, the foil prerelease Emrakul is unlikely to fetch a higher price than a regular Emrakul. Online players almost never pay for "fancy" versions of cards.
In fact, the extra Emrakuls that are given out as part of the events might lower the value. Most of the price for Mythics is because they're hard to find so adding more of them into the environment can only reduce their value.
Promo cards like that will almost never fetch you many tickets. A good part of the Magic Online economy is driven by redeeming, and promo versions aren't redeemable. Rampaging Baloths was the Zendikar prerelease promo, I believe, and I don't think that one's been worth more than a ticket, while the normal version has been worth at least four.
If you intend to participate in the prerelease events (which I advice against), then you should sell your Emrakul right away, because that is the moment you'll get the most for it. It should plummet fast.

everyone who joined gets Emrakul, but the foil ones are reserved for those who go 3-1 as bateleur said... it's not necessarily worth it for the money of Emrakul promo, but instead if you just want a free one so you don't have to pay for one later when using it in a constructed deck.. playing the prerelease is hey I'll take the free Emrakul in a gamble that I'll open some money in the sealed and can sell it for an inflated price before RoE's release
A good part of the Magic Online economy is driven by redeeming...
Is that really true? I never got the impression the redemption policy really affected the MTGO economy in any way as it seems like a very niche endeavor for individuals who either think they can generate a couple extra dollars in the transition to paper or are simply compulsive collectors. Maybe those categories describe more individuals than I'm aware of...
On-topic, assuming Emrakul does magically manage to become something relatively necessary for the function of some deck, the promos could be worth something eventually. As I eventually sold my promo Vampire Nocturni (2 Foil, 3 Non-Foil) for roughly 18 tix a piece when Vamps seemed like a somewhat legitimate deck.
Of course, I really doubt Emrakul has that potential.
Redeeming is not a "niche" activity at all. Many dealers redeem hundreds of sets a year, and I'm pretty sure that's what's causing the significant difference in value between a promo and a non-promo mythic (look at Malfegor, Dragon Broodmother, Rampaging Baloths, Comet Storm...). Also that's probably why terrible mythics like Eternity Vessel hold any value at all.

It's not a "niche" activity. I was contacted by a guy recently who told me he was already doing some business in my area who told me he could sell me up to $10k per month of redeemed sets. It's no small deal.
Redemption is one of the few reasons that cards maintain thier value as much as they do. Many many of the players just draft, and the ones who do constructed get paid in packs which eventually get drafted. A friday/saturday night can kick upwards of 100 drafts an hour which is 3600 packs worth of product per hour. (24 get opened 12 as prizes) Even at a moderate 15 drafts per hour average that's 360 drafts per day or nearly 13k packs entering the system.
The worldwide playerbase for MTGO isn't anywhere near the base that paper has. Redemption is marketed as "preserve the value of your personal collection" but what it really does is give you a way to sell it.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.

I never thought about the pre-release not being redeemable. Also unlike paper magic they don't have a limited supply of them so theres going to be tons of them. Normally pre-release versions are cheaper then the regular version in paper form so I would imagine the same thing on MTGO.

That was probably because of the payout bug. If you played in the first few hrs of the wwk prerelease, many events were not paying out prizes immedeately, but were rather manually being added to accounts as much as 6 hrs after the event. To compensate, wotc gave everyone in the events during that time period an extra foil commet storm. So if you went 3-1 or better you wouldve gotten 2. Foil promos have always been for 9 match points (3-1) or more. It is cleary stated that this is the case for ROE on the prerelease info page: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/other/04272010e
ADDITIONAL PRIZES: All players who participate in an Rise of the Eldrazi Prerelease Tournament will receive 1 copy of the prerelease Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. Players with at least 9 match points at the end of the tournament will also receive a premium foil Emrakul, the Aeons Torn.

lol, nice necro. To be fair though, no one thought the eldrazi were even remotely playable at the time. the dude up there who said "On-topic, assuming Emrakul does magically manage to become something relatively necessary for the function of some deck, the promos could be worth something eventually" was spot on.

You have to go 3-1 to get the foil. You get a regular one just for playing.

I got a foil comet storm at 2-2 for WWK.
