Ok, I'm freaking out, and my parents are freaking out, but it was an accident. We don't know laws very well, so maybe someone with some knowledge can help...
Mom's transmission blew out about a week and a half or so ago, so she has been borrowing my car ever since to go to work. She drives through some sketchy places to get to work, so she does carry a little .22 in the glovebox, and does have a license to carry. Well, I was driving back from FNM Friday, and got pulled over for a busted headlight. No big deal, right? But guess what Mom left in the glovebox.... and guess where my insurance was.. so yeah. Here I am, 16 years old and without a license to carry with a gun in the car. The second I saw it, I slammed the glovebox shut and immediately told the officer the situation. He told me to get out of the car, and he handcuffed me and searched the car. Since he was an officer in training, his guide cop dude had to come up because apparently this was a big deal. He called my parents, and mom had to come up. Naturally, she was tore up; she is a sweet lady, and never ever meant any harm, she just forgot like every other human does at some point in their life. Now I have to go to court and explain all this again.. So, how much trouble am I in? I've never been in trouble with the law before, and all in all I'm a model citizen, but there WAS a gun in the car and I have no carrying permit.
For legal reference, I live in Tennessee, and I am a minor at 16 years old. If somebody could just tell us the good and bad of the situation, that would be awesome...
Considering how much people are so anti gun in the country right now your more then likely gonna get torn apart and have to fight to get it cleaned off your record.
You did what you were suppose to do. You let the officer know what was going on and what happened.
Personally i think the judge should (i don't know who the judge is) will drop the charges.
you mom just needs to be in court with you to explain what happened.
Personally the cop should have just given you a warning, but the problem is in today society that they don't know you from the next guy that would have pulled that gun and shot them.
I personally don't think you have much to worry about. if that is exactly what happened.

criminal law is not my thing, but the police did what they were supposed to do. You were in possession of the weapon by having it in your car. That being said, there are several mitigating factors. I imagine that a judge would be fair.
First of all: Your family needs to get a lawyer's opinion, rather than getting advice from a Magic forum. I am not a lawyer, and anything I say may be in error.
This is only my opinion but, you should be just fine.
Have your mom in court with you to help explain. Charges in my opinion should get dropped with some serious "verbal justice" from the judge. Judge will put some fear into both you and your mom to ensure this doesn't happen again.
In most states (check your own statutes) unlawfully carrying concealed usually requires that the weapon be "on your person", as you don't need a permit to transport a weapon in a car, barring that it was loaded which could be a problem. But frankly this sounds like something the state wouldn't waste it's money taking to trial.
Also, get your headlights fixed so you don't get pulled over.

Here is who can tell you about the situation: An Attorney. Who you hired (or your parents hire) to represent you. I'm not licensed to practice in Tennessee so the only legal advice I'll give you is hire an attorney. It's worth it.

That said, I think you'll be fine.

Based on this document, the worst you should expect is some community service, which is far more lax than my state would be.
Additionally, your juvenile record should disappear once you hit 18.
