Ok, so after getting some of the new multi cards in Gatecrash and just revisiting some older ones that were difficult cuts I was hoping some might be able to provide some advice on the what to cut what to keep.
Change the thread Title to say [Peasant} if you please. That way, I can see this and generally be argumentative in more places on the boards more easily.
In any case.
Simic Charm
Elusive Krasis
Shambleshark
Snakeform/Temporal spring, probably the hybrid. But I think people should run the hybrid system.
Fire Covenant
Torrentof souls
Blightning/Shambles, depending on whether or not you want another beater.
eesh, boros. This is pretty dependant on how fast your cube is (If your cube is still being built/you're still feeling it out it might still be a good environment for bull cerodon), and how much you want something interesting like sunhome guildmage. Wojek halberdiers is actually a pretty good option in my opinion... but if pressed to just 3 I'd pick truefire, charm, and helix/sunhome guildmage, leaning towards helix.
Drop the Harvest hag unless Zealous persecution is somehow not often relevant.
For future reference, don't be afraid to post this in the main peasant cube body. It won't get lost; I read every word in there.
hey thanks for the quick reply... (i wasn't sure how to get the "[peasant]" thing in front so kinda just said 'f' it)
additionally, I am currently running the "hybrid" system that so many talk about but from my limited understanding of it, I need 2 cards of the same 'c/c' to remove 1 from of the respective colors no? so with U/G and B/W i needed a 2nd one to add to the list before I could really put them into the single colors and make more room, except i never found a match for em. (if have any ideas would appreciate)
either way for SIMIC have you found the shambleshark to be impressive? flash seems kind of random on it, and a 2/1 that can be blocked since it will be lower toughness seems odd... do you usually get it up to a 4/3 or consistently 5/4?
for RAKDOS, we don't NEED a beater really (re: shambling remains) but he's interesting and we like to have a bunch of different mechanics in the cube. I am surprised that you didn't want to keep Terminate, isn't that just one of the best kill spells? We haven't been able to try Torrent yet, but I am so excited, I never saw that card until I saw it in someone else's list here. Fire Covenant, now R/B seems to always be spending life to do stuff so is the life spent really realy worth it? we've never played this card before but its always been one we look at.
BOROS got tough with this set, I really am a fan of Bull Ceredon, i think the haste and just being a 5/5 beater is so good in a r/w theme deck where you sometimes can lack some finishing power... the Sunhome Enforcer was always a "pet" card for a friend and its good, helps stall the board n gunk up stuff but i am ok kicking him out
on Truefire paladin vs Sunhome guildmage I just don't see why people love the truefire so much... he seems very very mana intensive to ONLY help himself or am i crazy? the guildmage pumping everyone seems pretty great no? Wojek seems really aggressive and good that way too, but have such a hard time cutting those other R/W cards (Helix, Ceredon)
I am so bad at cutting cards, I always say how something has a use n such
if you untap with truefire paladin and WWRR he basically never dies in combat, and gets in for 6 if unblocked. so much flexibility, and it's a vigilant bear. having said that, i am yet to use him in my peasant.
temporal spring / shambleshark / elusive krasis / winged coatl
you can basically go with any three rakdos cards and it'll be good, so just roll a d6 or something lol.
lightning helix / truefire paladin / sunhome guildmage
cut harvest gwyllion
You can do a complex workaround to even out the hybrid numbers. You want a BW card and a UG card? You can add a GB and a UW card to compensate, or a UBGW combination. Or a UW, GRBR. It's busy but the math is sound. Just be sure to make the proper cuts out of the respective colored sections.
It's my opinion that If you're playing BR, you don't need another spot removal spell nearly as much as you'd appreciate some effect you don't have a million of. As for fire covenant, you can pay 7 life to kill three guys and basically roll your opponent over. So long as the life payment doesn't kill you, you just kill everything that you can, even if it costs you ~10 life and hopefully you win. Even paying 4 life to kill 2 tokens and a bear is really good. I am Fire covenant's biggest fan.
You don't pay mana for truefire. So long as you play stuff postcombat, here's what happens on turn 3:
A) You swing into your opponent's bear. He can't block since you can give him first strike. Now you can play a guy and take your free damage to go.
B) You swing into his 3/3. Your opponent has to make the decision to lose his bigger, more expensive guy do the +2/+0, or take 2. Usually, the answer is to take two. You play your three drop happily.
C) You don't have a turn 3 play. So you can swing in and either hit him for 4 or you can hold up mana to deter incoming attacks.
And like palingensia says, once you get to RRWW he's never dying in combat again except to another first striker.
Sunhome guildmage actually requires you to pay mana to do things. He doesn't threaten much until late game (6 lands or dead turns). Even then unless you have an army Truefire is swinging in for a lot in the same scenarios.
I already have Trygon Predator and it wasn't a cut choice. We don't have Shardless Agent in the cube currently... as I am just not in the mood to pay 15+ for a card. I was also "looking" at Nimbus Swimmer, but wasn't sure that it was that good. Same with Lorescale Coatl, is he that good? that worth? I mean I feel like he's only good if you get him as your turn 3 drop.

UMMM ok, its too early for me to really look at this with much brain power. more coffee is needed. I will have to RE-review that thread that goes over the "hybrid" system. from what you say it seems cool and sound obviously, but with all the updates I've been doing my record keeping and overall sharpness to the cube has been a bit lacking. I need to get my record keeping up before i get completely lost in hybridizing cards.

This makes much sense. It's at least a card we should def try.

Thanks for some added insight. on Rakdos, yeah i know they are all kinda sweet cards which is why i had such problems figuring out a cut
And I'm starting to understand the Paladin's power more now. I'm just sad because the BOROS section is littered with good cards that I want to have in there... so having some issues w/ making cuts (as i've noted before)
I linked to my hybrid talk in the OP in the Peasant thread. Easy peasy
Lorescale is a 3/3 for 3 on the attack, and that's standard for a contributory combat guy. But he's dangerous, and a 4/4 soon. It also has powerful interactions with random draw spells. Solid.
Nimbus swimmer is a powerful finisher and is like... top 10 todecks (9 mana = win city). But! And I underestimated this, paying 5 mana when you need to is a decent second mode. Or 6. Maybe 4. Hopefully 7.
It's basically fireball: a bad deal at any cost, but it is Any Cost. That's good. Almost makes me want to try slime molding....
Maybe
Even though in an essence that's what we are doing in the main thread? Am I wrong?
A lot of what we're doing in the main thread is kind of that, but very precise "pick k out of n cards" questions are only a part of it. A good deal is also "hey, what do you think of card xyz?" or "do you think strategy abc could be viable?", and that's not This or That discussion.
Specialities about the cube: U tempo, B aggro, R slow-ish are supported. G aggro is not.
Currently trying to support tokens in all colors but blue, in different ways: W pumps them, B sacrifices them, R suicides them, G has decent-sized ones.
cube list outdated
*literal C/U definition according to gatherer
**some cards are banned. Library of Alexandria, Land Tax, Sol Ring.
Yes, right now a lot of "this or that" discussion goes on in the general thread, especially from veterans who were around before the subforum was created. Newer people seem to not realize that such posts can go in there.
So, either we need some sort of announcement and mod enforcement of putting this type of discussion in the general thread or we make a "this or that" thread with a clear thread title for new people to find and use.
