I got to thinking about an old Legacy deck I was brewing about 5 years ago. It revolved around countering your own Gravecrawler with Arcane Denial, ultimately drawing 3 cards and getting your zombie back from the graveyard anyways, generating an obscene amount of card advantage. Other than that, it was just a basic beatdown tribal deck that could also have a flexible main and sideboard with hard counters. It never got very far in that format.
It just clicked in my head that Arcane Denial could actually do just about the same thing with the new Embalm creatures from Amonkhet. Sacred Cat is notably good, but there are Embalm creatures all the way up the curve to Aven Initiate (maybe not so playable).
Rather than forcing Blue into a deck that shouldn't play it (zombie tribal), it fits in the colours of Embalm, making this a pretty good fit. It can also carry a Soul Sisters or Tokens sub-theme very well. Since the Embalmed creatures are tokens, they also play well with the Populate mechanic, like Rootborn Defenses.
Online, this strategy would also benefit from Battle Screech.
Wouldn't it make exactly as much sense to use cards with flashback? The point of Gravecrawler was it doesn't exile itself, but embalm is just flashback for creatures.
