The sky was clear this evening, something that Nevin wasn't very fond of. He could feel the accendo pulse through his body as waves of power came over him.
Crowds were dissipating as the speech ended and both tension and excitement were apparent in every one of his brothers and sisters. This new war, if the immortalis were correct (and they always are) will be the one that will define this generation as well as shape future ones. Nevin knew that he had to take part but there was a minor technicality... you had to be at least 14 years old to enlist in the army. Then again, age never stopped him.
Nevin left the clearing where the spech had been held. He went back to his small lodge, a house half-built, half-dug out of the ground. He got his staff and his dagger, and he went looking for recruiters. They may think I'm too young, but they need every capable person they've got, and I'm more than capable...

The students of the Immortalis were adorned in black robes and were in charge of handlig enlistments. One was just cleaning up the grounds that the speech was given on and seemed to be trying to avoid attention.

After picking up a few more pieces of trash that had fallen during the speech, he looked up. "I suppose you could sign up with me" he said with obvious reluctance as the debris burnt to a cinder in his hand. "Who are you?"
"Name is Nevin," Nevin said. "I specialize in stealthy operations--scouting, assassination, that sort of thing. My element is lightning, and I'm pretty good with it. I'm pretty sure I could be useful in the military."

Nevin shrugged. "Old enough. Tell 'em I'm fifteen if they ask. I was under the impression you needed people for this fight, not that you'd worry about stuff like that."

The student looked at him warily, "If you are lying, adepts far stronger than me will be able to tell. We have age restrictions in place, not because we are discriminatory, but because the young aren't as in control of their emotions as they need to be. Frankly, young adepts are a liability."
Nevin shrugged. "Yeah, I understand. Most people below fourteen are too immature or stupid to join the ranks. I know how it goes. Fortunately, I don't have to worry about that--sign me up!" I'll deal with those adepts when the time comes, and if they won't let me join the army then I'll run my own missions.

"Sign you up?" asked judgemental student, "this isn't a raffle. One does not simply 'sign up' to defend our peoples. You must prove yourself worthy. We do not rely on the power of the masses but rather the concentrated power of the elite to punish the Sancti."

"Pursue me" he instructed as he darted off. Before Nevin could fully catch up, the student had already summoned his mastery over wind and began to glide away at a substantial speed.

Nevin didn't bother trying to run after the student--he knew he was far too slow to catch a wind mage. Instead, he pulled out his staff and focused his own elemental powers. Static crackled around it, and a jolt strong enough to paralyze--but only temporarily, and not enough to cause permanent harm--shot out of the staff, shooting towards the wind mage at lightning speed.

The student was prepared for the assault and nimbly avoided the bolts, turning and wheeling back towards Nevin. He yelled at him as he flew by, "The air around me changes when you try to charge it with electricity. You'll have to do better than that!"
"Lightning can strike even in a windstorm!" Nevin retorted. "I'll show you!" He was irritated now, but he was enjoying himself. He used that mix of anger and joy to fuel his next attack.
Nevin closed his eyes, focusing in the charges in the air, in the ground--and on the student. Though he didn't understand it in such terms, he began to try to build a charge difference between the student and his own staff. Electrons flowed out of the air and into his staff, making it strongly positive--and Nevin tried his hardest to make an opposing negative charge on the student. If this works, the bolt'll go right to him like iron to a magnet--he won't be able to use the air to dissipate it.

By the time the wind wielding student noticed another attack was launched, it was too late to dodge it. He increased the wind pressure behind him and was struck by the lightning for an instant before he grabbed a metal pole, grounding himself and sending the shock back into the ground. The student was clearly shaken by this as he called out to Nevin, "Better. Much better."
Nevin grinned. "I do have some skill, after all." But I can only do so much while he's grounded. The only way I can hurt him now is if I just shock him so hard that the sheer power of the lightning going through him burns him out, and that'll wipe me out completely. Plus it'd probably kill him, and I don't want to do that. However--Nevin pulled out his dagger. The metal of the dagger was smooth and even, and by building a charge on either end Nevin was able to basically turn it into a magnet. Then he threw it, aiming for where the student's hand touched the pole. If I can get him to let go, then I can shock him again.

The student used his free hand to curve the dagger and sent it spinning back toward Nevin. His mastery of the air was undoubtedly the best the aspiring fighter had ever seen.
Damn! I thought the magnetsm might stop him from doing that!! Nevin dodged his returning dagger, then grabbed it out of the air. Then he paused briefly to consider. I can't use anything ranged on him unless it's extremely powerful, because his wind can dissipate anything weaker. That means-- Since the wind-mage was still attached to the ground via his metal pole, Nevin decided to try and actually catch him. He began running toward the student, leaning forward with his hands behind his back, his hair sparking with static charge.

In an attempt to defend himself, the student tried to summon at Nevin's back to push him toppling forward but it was futile; the student was spent and Nevin was in front of him before he could fully recover.
Nevin's left hand still had his dagger in it, but Nevin didn't use it. Instead, he grabbed for the student's wrist with his right hand.
[Assuming this succeeds:]
"I think this is checkmate," Nevin said, and the student could feel the flow of potentially paralyzing current beneath Nevin's fingers.

The student nodded and congratulated the young adept. "Well done, you've proven your strength. Maybe bothering me wasn't a complete was of my time. What did you say you specialized in... stealth?
Nevin grinned lopsidedly. "I know it didn't show just now, but yeah. Anything sneaky--scouting, assassination, that kind of thing. I can fight if I have to, but it's not what I'm best at."
"So, where do I go from here?"

The student contemplated his answer before he replied... "I think you are ready..."
Shaking his hands free of Nevin's grip, he said some promising words, "I have someone to introduce you to. Someone very powerful."
