To be honest I am totally pumped for this set. But it just seems like the put in a whole lot of gimmicky cards. Tons of nods to previous sets, Garruk is 100% awesome yet 100% child's play designing, slivers again, staffs again, 6 total planeswalkers, several joke/funny cards (which I really do like) and the community/individual designed cards, and the new card border/rare sticker.
Seems like a lot of things to get people excited, and a lot of things that people will get their bum bum hurt about.

In all honesty this seems like the best core set we've had since M11. It looks really fun to draft and has tons of standard playable cards to keep the Spikes entertained. Every set will have its gimmicks, and if you don't like gimmicks don't use them. There are formats other than constructed, you know
I agree. I love when core sets take the opportunity to inject some of that magic humor that can be found in older sets (Werebear anyone?) but that would never make it into a storyline block. Like the card that turns things into frogs.
Better than m14, that's for sure. I think they're still trying to perfect their core set. They've got a long way to go, but I think they're on the right tracks. Even though I don't like the designer credit text, I didn't mind the designer made cards. It shows that wizards is at least a little open to suggestions.
I personally am not that fond of the set. Though I don't have much experience with core sets(M14 is the only other core set I've played with), it still seems kinda meh. There are a few cards I'm excited for, such as the new Nissa, Soul of Shandalar, and some of the cool artifact stuff, there's not enough to make me want to buy any of it. I'll draft it once or twice and probably enjoy it, but that's about it. I'll stick with Conspiracy for my pack cracking. It's just my personal, not very experienced opinion, but the set doesn't excite me very much.
Best core set in a long time. It has great cards, but they are all gimmicky - that's how mtg should be. If you make the best cards a spot removal, a simple utility or a beater, the game turns to be a a dispute between a bunch of a good.stuff decks.
Honestly, I might get a box of it, and I haven't gotten a box of a core set since M11. It's got four new planeswalkers and the two reprints aren't bad (I play Commander, so I wouldn't mind a Liliana or two). The only one I'd be disappointed in getting is Jace the Senator, and even then, I could attempt to live the dream of dropping him with a Doubling Season out. The Souls are limited/casual fodder, but my Commander decks aren't exactly Bolas-level anyways, so I'm sure I could get a few games out of them. The rares are nice too. Urborg and Chord of Calling, WotC? Well played,,,
I would rather have 30% of the cards be gimmicky than just a couple. This means that I - and we - can spend months and months trying to break new ground. Cards like Aggressive Mining, Ensoul Artifact, Chord of Calling, Preeminent Captain, Spirit Bonds, Chasm Skulker, Chief Engineer, Necromancer's Stockpile, Genesis Hydra and many, many more, including the planeswalkers - they're open suggestions waiting to be worked on. I actually think that with the next rotation so close by, we'll see a lot more weirdness than we're used to.
Best core service since mm10. Full of flavor and unique card design. The players can figure out the power level. I couldn't care less about that though. Picking up my foil hot soup
I think what makes this set good is that for the most part... the bad cards (which have to be in every set) are at least interesting (with the exception of grindclock). They might be bad but they make you stop and think for a bit and who knows maybe someone will break them.
It still had much needed reprints, Chandra, Chord and Urbog.
Downsides I am not sure about the "building blocks" of the coming standard being in this set
I am a little worried about blues ability to draw cards... Black is pretty good at killing things atm but no doom blade is concerning. No 4 cmc boardwipe for white.
I think it is wonderfully wierd all over... it gives much broader horizens it's just kind of sad that in standard everyone will still play boring decks despite the interesting cards.
It is possible that the "building blocks" will all be in Khans kind of like RTR had multicolour version of staple core cards so they weren't in M13 (which meant it was a little wierd)

I think the set is really weak but it will save me some money since I only need to pick up a couple cards. I was very disappointed with the removal suite in this set and yes it's a gimmicky set but not exciting for me. This set seems bad for control players and aggro players.
Don't get me wrong, I love the gimmicks. I was so excited to see obby, avacyn, etc. It's really cool to have characters from blocks show up in core sets IMO.

Gimmicks sell packs. Well, they do in the sense that some crowds love certain gimmicks. When Aaron Forsythe's release article said "It's in There", it meant it. There's a little something for everybody in this set, and while the overall feel of it might make you feel like you are shopping for snake oil out of the back of a wagon, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Lightening the tone a bit can have its own appeal and give a set its resonant character. M15 has a ton of this, and also continues on with a few great Core Set trends. Spikes love powerful reprints, Johnnies love new toys, and Timmies love crazy effects. All of these are present here.
i wonder if WOTC is moving away from coreset 'staples'?
green hasnt seen a 2drop non-creature ramp spell since M13
white has no mass removal that is under 6cmc
blue lost its 1cmc draw spell, Quicken i guess hasnt been played in months
black doesnt have a destroy creature card, i can live with that seeing as Theros filled that spot
red has its standard 2cmc burn spell
the best part of green is ramping into a fatty without being worried about a wrath, if there is no 4cmc wrath in the new block then i wonder if aggro will slow down a bit

MTG is a hobby, cant afford it? GTFO! Don't complain about prices.
Perilous Vault isn't Wrath Of God but it should help keep aggro decks in check. Green based control decks can activate it easily by turn 4 and every color can run it including black. I could see some slower more midrange aggro decks springing up. The next set will dictate that.
Green control? I don't know that a card that costs 6 will keep aggro in check. You have to activate it too. Which means that ramping might let you hit the switch on turn 6. If not, turn 7. I won't bank on this being our board wipe.
I like the set. I loved it at first, and now I just think it's good. I've only ever bought 1 box of a core set, and I think that it was M11. I've thought about buying a box of this one, but I think I'll just stick to singles.

Bad for aggro and control are some of the reasons why I like this set.
After some decades of standard play, I feel like I'm tired of the creature deck vs. wrath deck dichotomy and I'm longing for a weirder environment for years.
