Maybe i was just expecting too much from the rumors in the past few months, but all the confirmed cards so far seem pretty weak, and the few slots left dont leave much room for some cool stuff, as a black/red player the new lilliana is a huge let down

Hey, I agree with OP. New Liliana was a huge disappointment to me too, and I have a mono-black deck. Murder is great, Nighthawk and Sign in Blood are fantastic reprints and Chandra's version of Arc Lightning is pretty nice, but the rest of those don't impress me at all (I hate Firebrand).
I can definitely say that I am very disappointed with M13 so far as well. I'm glad the Titans are gone, but a lot of my favorite cards that only got one shot at Standard like Timely Reinforcements, Chandra's Phoenix, Dungrove Elder, Phantasmal Image and Stormblood Beserker are already gone. Core set staples like Day of Judgment and Birds are nowhere in sight. The new Ajani is ok, but like Liliana, doesn't protect himself. I also hate how he relies on you having a board presence (actually I hate all of the core set walkers, except for Garruk, Primal Hunter..). I really needed a replacement for Gideon and this isn't want I was hoping for...
I'm really happy with Yeva, Tarland, Beast Tracker and especially Thragtusk (my favorite card in the set so far).
These cards are nice to see back:
-Nighthawk
-Sign in Blood
-Sleep
-Serra Avatar (Really wanted one for my EDH deck)
-Rancor
-Nicol Bolas
-Captain of the Watch
But I already have all of those, except for Serra Avatar. So there's just not much that's getting me excited so far.
This is already my favorite core set of all time, because of how it's been made up of less generic fantasy flavor (though it still has plenty of that) and has a much greater focus on showing off lots of different planes and settings from around the multiverse. It makes so much sense for a core set to take this perspective, as it gives a much better impression of the game's setting as a multiverse. Someone entering the game here is going to be presented with a variety of teases at different places that can be explored but still find familiar conceptual handholds to keep them grounded in what they already know and understand. I have no idea why I never considered this approach as an option before, and now that I've seen it I couldn't imagine doing anything else.
As for individual cards? There are few that I like and want to use, plenty that I like even though I won't be using them, and a remainder that I'm ambivalent toward or outright dislike. Same as every other set. The exact percentages change but that's not important. Over the long term I get plenty of cards that appeal to me; if a particular set isn't interesting to me I know that it's more interesting to someone else instead.
This is weird. I was wishing the Titans won't return but after seeing the cards spoiled so far I know I'll be missing them. I hate those rings. I hope the next cycle would be as relevant as the Titans were.

Gonna leave this account now cause many friends have access on this one and had posted in the past.
The fact that this set is toned down a lot of things while still bringing in powerful cards is definitely a GOOD thing. M13 cards do not need to be on par with other sets that aren't core sets, for the sheer fact that they are meant to keep basic guidelines for newer players to get into the game easier. I am okay with the power (and to an extent, lack thereof) of this whole set due to a) no Titans b)More interesting choices c) Powerful uncommons and d)Being a core set: Simplicity.
All of these facts lead to a healthy limited environment, a standard with new toys to play with, and a good medium for newer players to get interested into the game.
All in all, I am extremely happy here.

It's a core set, so it's difficult to actually say I'm unhappy with what's in store for us so far. Anyone that isn't pleased is probably too demanding. Colorous Pius pretty much nailed it, otherwise. Quitting is always an option if you're unhappy with the game, but I feel it's just pettiness that overwhelms peoples' abilities to assess anything about sets/cards in a way that would help them realize that WotC are not going to have a UW control Standard with Jace 2.0 again/Jund/Faeries dominated meta. That was an unhealthy, prolonged apex in the history of Standard decks anyway. Hell, even Dragonstorm was kinda like that, except there were decks that capably beat it.
For a core set, I'm seeing a lot of great cards. If If you like black, you should be happy about Duress, Sign in Blood, and Vampire Nighthawk, among other things. Red players have been happy with Flames of the Firebrand, Smelt, and Wild Guess. And I'm pretty sure that there'll be a few more surprises that will be fun to play.

How many popular Modern cards have debuted in Core Sets?
You have point, stormblood berzerker knocked my socks off when i saw it, a inquisition of kozilek reprint or something would have been nice, there seem to allot of really common reprints in this set, nothing too interesting to me

Not really sure how you think red players can be happy> All those cards suck and are fringe plays at best. And i don't play red but definitely can recognize red getting the shaft.

Flames can set up potential 2-for-1s or even 3-for-1s. Wild Guess is almost like a red See Beyond, and Smelt is at least better than Crush. I'll admit red is getting the shaft, but those three cards aren't bad by any stretch.
Take your monoblack deck, then set aside 14 swamps. Add 4 Creeping Tar Pits, 4 Darkslick Shores, 4 Drowned Catacombs, and 2 Jwar isle Refuge and add 4 Jace, the Mindsculptors. Your monoblack deck is instantly better. Better yet, drop those refuges, throw in some islands and some mana leaks, and lo and behold, you're now playing a real deck. Congratulations. Welcome to the world of competitive M:TG.

as a limited player this set is awesome. also the main banes of core set limited are fixed (mind control is no longer the nuts, fireball doesnt 3 for 1 and red players actually have a chance to be passed it, overrun isnt uncommon) even the dumb mythic rare worldfire is way better and cooler than stupid reject jank like time reversal in the past, exalted in black is cool and there are still plenty of contructed playable cards in the set, they just arent dumb format defying cards like titans that denyed soo many cards a chance to ever be played as they failed the titan test

The thing is, threads like this one are 1. usually NOT accurate and 2. always created BEFORE the full set is spoiled. Every season we get threads like this one, and it got old/annoying years ago.
M13's Black is already waaaaaaay better than M12's Black and we still have spoils to come. M13's Red is considerably worse up to this point, but Red is the color with the least spoils so far: we still have most of the rares and 1 Mythic to come, and we already got some very nice toys in Arc Lightning functional reprint (which is awesome, see Arc Trail), the new Phoenix, which is better and worse than Chandra's Phoenix, Chandra itself, which is a GOOD planeswalker that will maybe see play this time around (I already got my playset on the cheap).
So, this thread is just not correct, period. No, M13 isn't a disappointment, specially Black, and it's too soon to judge Red.
On the other hand, we'll have to see how red pans out this set. It looks pretty bad with 23 spoiled. Red gets Firewing Phoenix (fringe playable), Flames of the Firebrand, Wild Guess, Smelt and Searing Spear. So the only MD'able card is the Arc Lightning functional reprint.
You play BR.. I tend to play BR (and U). Unfortunately, it looks like green and white are getting the most from this core set.. :/
Stuffy Doll reprint makes me like this core set regardless!
I was hoping Goblin Settler would see a reprint. At first, card numbers of the previewed cards make sense... until Goblin Piker was revealed
Goblin Settler would have made sense. It's a Goblin (there seems to be a mini-goblin theme), its the filler land destruction in red and could have had a Gruul/Rakdos/Ravnica reference.
Maybe one day... Why can you reprint those cards WotC?

I am convinced that WotC is "dumbing" the game because of all the stupid posts they come across on MTG-related forums
duress, vampire nighthawk, ravenous rats, sign in blood, vampire nocturnus, arc lightning, searing spear, firewing phoenix, nefarox, krenko, krenko's command, new liliana, chandra firebrand.
Those in B/R alone. I'm sorry, were you expecting Lightning Bolt or Dark Ritual to be satisfied? Can we close this thread please?

1. Does the set allow for a limited environment where I can harness my skills to win games?
2. Will there be cards that will warp or define formats?

I thought they were too, then Innistrad block finished and white had everything and green got BUFF and now green's getting MORE BUFF.
Dual lands would make this set amazing, ajani is amazing, one of the best plainswalkers in my opion
I agree with you. Based on the currently spoiled cards, green got really amazing cards like Thragtusk. They even have the best planeswalker IMO.
But I think it will even out after everything is spoiled though. *crosses fingers*
