I was browsing through MagicCards.Info to kill some time and was perusing the enchantments Red has access to. I knew some of them were great, like Repercussion or Gravity Sphere, but them I came across cards like Citadel of Pain & Price of Glory, which just makes me smile.
Has anyone had any success with global/local Red enchantment effects at the table? I'm curious about a fair number of cards. Most of these cards are from much older sets, which I'm not entirely familiar with. I know some, like Sneak Attack & Chaosphere, but most of my Magic Lore is with the more modern blocks.
Some look downright nasty, like Price of Glory, while others like Ancient Runes look situational but abuse-able. Others look interesting but could very well be a trap, Brand of Ill Omen. Has anyone had a lot of play with any of these cards, and if so, how would you rate your experience with them? If not, from a game plan standpoint, how useful would many of these enchantments be?
I'm interested in building a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx Red Devotion Deck (I finally came across three more copies!), and I want some really nasty enchantments like Pyrohemia that I could abuse at the table. Red Control is another option as well, I don't see many Red decks at the table so the shock of a Control-style Red could throw off some of my mates.
Also just looking for general tips and know how to build more casual, Non-Devotion enchantment-based decks for the future.
Also, did I mention Price of Glory yet? I like it. The Red Mage inside of me smiles at the thought of opposing Control decks with this is play...
P.S.S. - As always, please feel free to leave any comments, suggestions, critiques and general advice. I seek to master Red in all Its glory. Speaking of which...
P.S.S.S. - Have you heard about this card? Red enchantment? Destroys lands when someone tries to play the game when it isn't their turn? No? You sure? ... Price of Glory!
Decks like the one that you posted are inherently flawed in the sense that they piss everyone off without actually affecting the board. In practice this almost always means that you'll get ganged-up on and killed because why the Hell would you do anything else? None of your cards affect the board so people who simply cast ramp/threats/draw spells/whatever and "do something" will crush you because nothing that you do actually matters.
To illustrate this point consider your wombo combo of Price of Glory and Citadel of Pain. How does that interact in any way, shape or form with the decks that I've helped you build in the past and/or posted for your consideration? The answer is that it doesn't. All you need to do is cast your threats/spells at Sorcery speed, tap your your excess lands "for no reason" and suddenly the Red player trying to "get you" isn't actually doing anything. You still kill him because he's being an annoying little ***** but it's so free to pick him off because none of his cards actually matter. After 2-3 circuits of focus-fire he goes down and the game progresses as per usual.
This, by the way, is why you'll never see me play a burn deck full of Flame Rifts and Sizzles and whatnot. All you do is piss people off and lose. What I will do is play decks with 1-2 powerful burn spells such as Price of Progress, Sulfuric Vortex and/or Manabarbs but I'll always support them with a ton of threats/removal that "actually do stuff." The point that I'm slowly trying to make here is that decks full of these "annoying" cards usually suck and lose miserably but they do work well in small numbers. You don't want the average card in your deck to have no impact on the board but as long as you keep it to ~4 cards total then it's fine.
In White I can actually build an Enchantment deck that does stuff and has an impact on the board. Red is a different beast, with an entirely different strategy. No sense pissing people off if I can't withstand the hate tide. Price of Glory & Citadel of Pain would be better suited as a 1 of; something that is just annoying and distracting from the real danger, but otherwise provides a threat that needs to be answered. Or not used at all. Still. I'm thinking PoG would be fun to run in a midrange 1v1 deck...
Anyhow, I'll think of something else in the meanwhile. Could still go with enchantments, but things like Gratuitous Violence, Rage Reflection, Raging River & Aggravated Assault instead. I should really just get off my ass and build that Lovisa Coldeyes EDH deck I've been hankering for. I don't see a casual EDH forum though... bah!
The people over at the EDH forum will gladly help you with your Lovisa deck. From what I can tell it's not an especially competitive group of individuals.
That's a relief. I'm always a bit nervous to ask anything in the "competitive" circles. There was a time EDH was pretty casual, but the popularity of the Format has exploded, ushering in a ton of ultra-cutthroat pro's. Not my style, but I do still enjoy the format. Thanks for the tip!
And, ya know, dealing with my constant new threads popping up every day or so. If nothing else I like to gab Magic and learn where I can.
Saw your updated a deck. Looks good to me other than the Fireballs which aren't especially playable cards in my opinion. Comet Storm is better if you want some big X spell but even things like Sudden Demise and Mizzium Mortars are also sweet. I also think that Staff of Nin is strictly worse than Outpost Siege in Nykthos decks since the cheaper spell with the Red plip tends to do a lot more for the deck in my experience. I also think that you over-value Sun Droplet in Nykthos decks in general and that you should be looking to play any RR 2 drop in that slot if at all possible. You don't put 4 Nykthos in a deck if you're not planning on abusing the bejeezus out of them but as it stands you barely have any support for them. Alternatively you could simply cut down to ~1 Nykthos and keep the Artifacts but it makes no sense to load up on them if you're not going to play with Red spells.
Between these three: Sudden Demise, Mizzium Mortars & Comet Storm, which would you recommend for a good ol' fashion board wipe/finisher? I'm leaning between Mortars or Storm, which Storm winning out since I could target weakened players.

I think that Pyre Charger is unplayable and wrt to the other 3 I have them ranked Whisperer > Lasher > Zealot but I'd never run a bunch of Lashers/Zealots in any deck. They make fine singletons (2 copies of either tops) since the effect is sometimes relevant but in general I prefer cards like the Whisperer that are "always good" and that scale well into the lategame. Stigma Lasher on turn 2 can mess people up but come turn 6 you never want to see that card. You get the idea.
With respect to removal vs finishers you're asking for 2 different cards. The best removal is removal and the best finishers are finishers. Comet Storm is great if you have a Gauntlet + Nykthos + a ton of lands/perms in play because it will often kill everyone outright. That being said if you only have access to 4-6 mana then it's garbage. Mortars/Demise are great at killing dudes and they're still great if you have access to a ton of mana but they'll obviously never win the game outright for you. In that sense you can't pit them against one another and you have to decide how much space you dedicate to removal and how much space you dedicate to finishers. Playing ~8 "burn spells" total is very common in my experience but as to the balance that depends entirely on your needs. The 50/50 split is the most common but by no means is it "objectively better" than other variations.
Also, consider investing in an Insurrection or two. Whereas X spell finishers legit need a billion mana to end a game I can can count on 1 hand the number of times that I've cast Insurrection and proceeded to lose the game. Every meta is different obviously but in general it reads "8 mana you win the game" and that's as good as it gets when it comes to finishers in my experience. YMMV but I love the card personally and think that it's criminally underplayed. I clearly have no idea what your meta looks like though so take that suggestion with a grain of salt.
That's the beauty of Magic in my mind. For someone like me "messing around" is why I can still play the game 16 years later because there's no such thing as perfect decks/builds and you can tweak your favorite brews indefinitely. There's absolutely no reason why you can't jam Price of Glory and Citadel of Pain in this list for ~10 games and then play another 20 without them. Once you find a shell that you like you can mold it and adjust it to try new things without having to dismantle/rebuild from scratch.
That's one of my favorite aspects of Magic as well. I build decks all the time, usually at least one a day. It's really fun and I love learning about new cards, new strategies and new ways to apply that knowledge to the table. R is typically considered to be one of the worst colours at the multiplayer table, and I crave that challenge. It's also just my favorite colour in general, so I like to field red decks whenever I can.
I love my Akroma, Angel of Fury. I have the FTV:A edition. I would play her in everything if I could.
The list isn't exact as things tend to change here and there, but this is the gist. You could certainly fit Akroma in there, my wife has had her in there at times.
She has a pair of Archangel of Thune?! Damned. I've been hunting for a playset of her for my Soul Sister of Thune deck. Which complete lacks the Thune.
Nice deck list though, I'll mine some ideas out of it.
Thanks Xyx, happy to read your thoughts. I too am a fan of Repercussion + Blasphemous Act. Burn all the things!
Made some updates - the deck is coming along nicely. Loving the interactions between Gratuitous Violence + Inferno Titan / Boros Reckoner / Kumano, Master Yamabushi. Not to mention the sheer power boost in damage over all. Not sure about the threesome of Comet Storm though, two should be enough. Anyone have some solid advice for a singleton?
Mizzium Mortars it is! This deck should be able to generate mana like crazy so the overload cost is fairly easy to reach. Great against some of the token decks I see at play.

Like I said I think that the card is grossly underrated. 4 damage to all opposing creature is a lot and it kills everything south of 5+ CMC threats in most instances.
One of the decks I usually have a headache against is an Abzan mid-range; creatures get stupid big, stupid fast. Flying, first strike, lifegain, deathtouch. Pain in my ass. Most of my strategy revolves around killing my mate as fast as possible, hopefully between Storm / Mizzium I can smack him down fast enough for the quick kill. Scaling cards like Figure of Destiny & Kargan Dragonlord were included just to match his huge monsters. Bastard!
Nothing major, just switched out Mizzium Mortars for Koth of the Hammer. Mizzium was great, but didn't have quite the impact I needed. I'll keep it around and playtest it some more, but for now I want to see if Koth can pull any weight on his own.
Insurrection hasn't come into play yet, but I'm bidding my time. I feel like a one-of is a good number, I just need to draw into it. Outpost Siege lacks the raw abuse of Mind's Eye, but is easier to use with Nykthos. All in all still a good card.
I'll do some more playtesting, not entirely sold on Koth of the Hammer. Maybe another big, beefy creature? Another spell? Artifact? Dunno, I'll find something I'm sure!
Re-added Mizzium Mortars. It's proven itself to be a cheap mass removal spell, especially against token swarm. Has my +1 Seal of Approval! TradeMark!
Dropped Koth of the Hammer. He's been useful in other decks, but just isn't pulling his weight here. I also dropped both Kumano, Master Yamabushi & Akroma, Angel of Fury, though it was hard for me to cut out my Lady Love. I wanted to make space for a pair of Archetype of Aggression. I want to see if the Trample effect alongside Figure of Destiny / Inferno Titan makes any significant difference. Plus denying my mates their own Trample effect will alter things drastically.
Gauntlet of Might has proven to be an all-star here. Between it and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, I can usually Comet Storm two or three other players out of the game early enough to trash anyone else left standing.
Insurrection finally saw some play. Hilariously useful card. The oracle text might as well say "You Win."
I'll continue with my play tests. Something still feels a bit off about the whole deck, not sure what. I'll play it out. Thanks all for the suggestions thus far. Please feel free to leave any comments, critiques or questions as always!

P.S. - I may cut out two Inferno Titan in order to bring back Kumano & Akroma, not sure though. I like the Titans for the raw power and ab-usable effects. Would I be loosing out on too much needed power? Kumano is a repeatable effect, while Akroma provides raw power and sexiness. Thoughts?

Possible RR cards I've been thinking to include over Sun Droplet: Stigma Lasher, Dragon Whisperer, Ash Zealot, Pyre Charger. All of the Enchantments I've found at RR didn't strike me as all that useful.

Eldrazi Displacer/Eerie Interlude flipping your Morphed Akroma into rage-mode is gas. Red also has cards like Flametongue Kavu, Goblin Dark-Dwellers and Inferno Titan that are sweet to blink and Flameshadow Conjuring is kinda nuts.
Red and White battle hard for "last place" when it comes to multiplayer colors but I do think that Red wins out in the end. It's close though.
