So, it's been a long time since I've been on these forums. Hello everyone!
I was previously known as rhakee but didn't log on since the Twitch merge so rip. But I've been looking into getting back into Magic. I haven't played in almost 4 years and much has changed since. In the meanwhile, I've been slowly collecting pieces for a Kaalia deck, a commander I have always wanted to play around with but never had the budget for. Now that I've finally built her, I feel like the deck maybe too clunky. Part of it is that and another part is just me being rusty. There just seems like too much stigma with her, more so than infinite combo decks. I was looking for any advice to make the deck run smoother. Another option all together is to strip it for parts and make a more "politically acceptable" deck, but if I can salvage the demon goddess, I'd love to.
Hey sleepyrx! Welcome (back) to the forums. I love Kaalia and have played her for a long time now (my wife currently pilots her in its current iteration). There's a couple of questions I'd ask you first before proposing suggestions.
1) Do you have a budget for suggestions that are proposed? I'd like to respect that if I can so that you actually take my suggestion seriously and hopefully improve your deck. I'm not going to suggest Mana Crypt if you don't want to buy it.
2) How competitive is your playgroup? My own Kaalia list (the link is in my signature) is tuned for an extremely competitive playgroup that doesn't mind Land Destruction and other Stax effects. If your playgroup already has problems with Kaalia, then adding in more Stax and disruption might not be good for you.
Also, there are two primary strategies that I've seen on the internet for Kaalia. For competitive lists, that is. Strategy 1 is to go with a Reanimator subtheme, allowing another method of cheating in powerful Angels/Demons/Dragons into play. Strategy 2 is to play her in a Stax package and slow the game down enough for Kaalia to safely connect with your opponents. I personally subscribe to the latter strategy, finding it to be more consistently effective than the Reanimator strategy. What kind of strategy do you want to employ with Kaalia?
Some additional clarification would help the MTGSalvation community offer good constructive feedback to you, comrade.
Hello! Thank you for your response! I should have been more clear:
My budget restrictions aren't tight, but I won't be able to access a Mana Crypt or cards as expensive as it. Lets say any card should be under 50$
As far as playgroups, I don't really have one at the moment. I'm still floating around, trying to settle on one. The main thing I'm looking for is making Kaalia more consistent and reliable. I'm open to adding stax into the deck, or anything to make it more solid and well rounded against any general meta. I'll probably fine tune it once I settle somewhere.
I would make these changes because you'll be increasing your Angel/Demon/Dragon density and adding in a card that is absolutely overpowering. The cards you're taking out don't seem to be particularly effective. Blind Obedience is good but I think adding in one of the Kaalia targets will be more effective than slowing down your opponents.
