I was going to make a list for Varolz, the Scar-Striped instead, but two people in my meta had already stated they were going to make them, and I lack both Death's Shadow and Phyrexian Dreadnought whereas both of the other players had both, and that kinda put me off building the deck. Instead, I chose to revive an old shell I'd been meaning to for quite some time - my proliferate shell! With the printing of a legendary Gilder Bairn, I felt the time was appropriate to put my favorite counter-based cards back into use.
How does one play this deck?
>does it have proliferate in its card text
>????
>that's literally it
I've been playing this deck nonstop on Cockatrice trying to figure out what strengths and weaknesses the deck had, because I kind of built it blind hoping it'd work. Spoiler alert: It didn't.
It had a lot of consistency issues, ranging from completely dead draws to lack of counters to work with to mana issues, but the biggest issue it had was the fact that it did absolutely nothing when it was getting attacked. Almost every creature is necessary to keep alive, and few of them fly.
I decided to add more interactive spells, and spells that more consistently help Vorel always have something to fiddle with. Even now as I'm playing the deck, I'm still having trouble dealing with aggressive decks and disruptive spells, but to be honest, I'm running out of options that aren't downright comedic in nature - the only things left that I can think of are Fog Bank and Gomazoa. Thoughts?
I don't like Kraj much because of infinite combos, but he's probably the best "Put +1/+1 counters on guys" card out there, so I'll put up with it for now, I guess.
I really think this could be better, I feel like I'm missing something. Feel free to give feedback!
Great deck! I was kicking around something like this in my head, so I am definitely stealing some ideas! One card that I certainly want to test is Serrated Arrows. You might just get more than 3 uses out of it;) I'm just not sure what you would want to cut.
Also, if you ever run more planeswalkers, you might consider Liquimetal Coating, since it lets Vorel interact with 'walkers.
If you were to also run something like March of the Machines with this, you could then turn your planeswalkers into creatures. At which point Experiment Kraj can hijack their abilities and activate them all he wants at absolutely no cost since he's not a planeswalker himself. This is mostly a comedy option, though in most cases you can win the game on the spot with the right walkers. (This still works, right?)
