Phage has been a favorite legend of Mine ever since I first saw Her and one of My big dissapointments when I first started playing edh was that She wasn't really playable as a general. Then I read this thread: http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=335276 and started thinking more about it and decided it was time to put Her to the test. It turn out better than I expected so I decided to persue it further and this is where I've gotten with it so far.
Volrath's Stronghold - some much needed creature recursion, a must since one of the ways to get Phage into play is counter Her and grab Her out of the graveyard
Reliquary Tower - You draw a lot of cards playing this deck. Its nice not having to discard them
CREATURES
Platinum Angel - One of the ways You can stop Phage from killing You. the 4/4 Flying body doesn't hurt either
Liliana Vess - Every option here is helpful to this deck
Sorin Markov - Like Liliana every option is good with Him too
ENCHANTMENTS
Nether Void - Another answer to Phage killing You. It can aslo slow the game down enough for You to get the ball rolling
Endless Whispers - Used in conjunction with a sacrifice outlet this lets You either give somebody Abyssal Persecutor so You can play Phage or give somebody Phage to kill them
Planar Portal - A tutor every turn at 6 mana its easily done in this deck too
EQUIPMENT
Lightning Greaves - The few dudes You run need to be protected. This is the best card for the job
Darksteel Plate and Shield of Kaldra - The other line of protection (apart from shroud or hexproof) is to make Your guys indestructible. These are the equipment for that job
Whispersilk Cloak - The shroud is great but the real plus here is unblockable. It turn Phage into one shot death
Swiftfoot Boots - Hexproof and haste is a fantastic combination for most of the dudes in this deck
Chalice of the Void - Another way to counter Phage but at 14 mana to get the 7 counters on it You need the cost is a bit steep. You also need to come up with a way to kill it when You want to get Phage into play
Gate to Phyrexia - A good multipurpose card. It's a sacrifice outlet and it's artifact destruction. I highly reccomend this for builds running Chalice of the Void
Dash Hopes - Another counter for Phage although the chances of it working are really situational
Life's Finale - An extra dudes sweeper with the added bonus of ripping three dudes out of somebody's deck and dumping them in their graveyard
Strip Mine effects - If You like to blow land up run them or if Mystifying Maze is common in Your playgroup run them
Vedalken Orrery and Shimmer Myr- Great additions for control heavy playgroups. If somebody is trying to answer Your way of stopping Phage killing You just flash in another one!
Grim Tutor and Imperial Seal - Great tutors if You have access to them. They were left out of My build purely for financial reasons
Dark Confidant and Dark Tutelage - Long term card advantage at a substantial life cost. If You want to run these I recommend more top deck manipulation or more life gain
Exsanguinate - Some life gain to make up for all the life You spend on card draw and tutors. With infinite mana possible with this deck it can win You the game on its own
Vesuva - Copy one of Your own like a coffers or if Your opponent has something better You do too
Decree of Pain - A dude sweeper with some built in card advantage
Fetchlands - They help thin the deck out and give You a reshuffle when You don't like what You see with Top or Scroll Rack
PLAYING THE DECK
Playing the deck is fairly simple. The hardest part of the game plan is getting Phage out of the command zone without Her killing You. When You are trying to play Her for the first time I recommend trying to have one of Your answers to Her in play and have either Imp's Mischief in Your hand as a back up or Have Guardian Beast out because if Your opponents are going to be able to stop You from playing Her it will usually be on the first attempt. From there its a simple matter of trying to keep Her from going back to the command zone
If You don't have an answer to Phage in Your opening hand it can be hard to determine which one to tutor for. Usually the best answer is Torpor Orb this card is really underrated, particularly if You can get it down early. The other good option for Your first phage answer is Nether Void. This is great if You know the other decks at Your table are fast because it lets You slow the game down to Your pace.
Once You've gotten Phage in its time to start winning. The obvious answer here is to beat face with Her, if You have some of the equipment online that is a fine plan giving Her some mix of shroud, hexproof, haste and indestructibilty is awesome. Whispersilk cloak is the best option if You want to give Her shroud thanks to the unblockable option. There will however be time times when You cant go straight into beating face. This is where the Endless Whispers and sacrifice outlet plan comes in. How this works is You sacrifice Phage while You have Endless Whispers out, it will trigger giving somebody Phage at the end of turn. If they can't deal with the end of turn trigger they die.
When things are going bad it can be hard to stall for time despite the sweepers We run. My favorite stalling tactic is to get Abyssal Persecutor and Platinum Angel into play at the same time creating a game state where the game can't end. This is even better if You have seen a mix of the equipment and can offer them some protection
CONCLUSION
If You have any stories about playing Phage or have a list You want to share I'd love to hear about it. Please post them here
Thank You for taking the time to read My Phage primer.
Thanks Blackjack68. Its nice to know at least 1 person doesn't think I'm crazy
ok, sorry, got it !
I like how you need to put much more effort for not killing yourself than killing your opponnent
That is half the fun of it. If You can get Phage into play killing the opponents is the easy part, Its getting Her there without Her killing You thats the trick!
Yeah I have. That's what got Me thinking about this.

Illisuionary Mask works too.
How? I don't get this one.
Quote from TobyornotToby »
So does Chalice of the Void with help from coffers. Dash Hopes is another counter.
I think there is enough ways to stop Phage killing You without having to resort to chalice at 7 and Dash Hopes is just bad. I can't see anybody hesitating to pay the 5 life.

If you're 1v1 or want vengeance on someone it also helps to give It That Betrays away with whispers, then sacrifice your general in response to the EtB trigger =D
I guess its another way around the trigger but at its a bit rough. I'm looking at mostly multiplayer for this build. It seems good for 1v1
The little bit of testing I've done so far suggests the answers I've got to Phage in here already are pretty much the right ones
The way Illusionary Mask works is that you can cast a creature face down(you don't announce what it is, you just say you are paying such and such, the total mana of the creature and it's face down), and when it's flipped face up its enter the battlefield effects won't trigger. Mask is useful but expensive.

Ok thanks. Is She didn't have to be in Your hand to do this it would be fantastic. As it is I don't like it enough for the price tag

Yes, but unfortunately errata struck the card and made it have to be in your hand.

Check out the thread for my cube if you have the time, and tell me how terrible it is.
Generals meant to be drafted first in a single pack of 6 cards.
And here is the actual cube, meant to be drafted in 4 regular sized packs. (60 card decks)
Possibly consider Life's Finale in place of something? honestly not sure what would be the best option to out though. Additionally, it doesn't seem like you're getting much mileage out of Phyrexian and Ashnod's Altars, would you consider Carnage Altar as a replacement for one of them that can also draw you into some card advantage?
If people play mystifying maze much where you play youll need some strip mine type lands. Also be cautious playing because if someone Krosan grips your platinum angel or whatever enabler you use when phage is on the stack you won't be having much fun.

Both interesting suggestions. Life's Finale wouldn't work in My playgroup. We run too much recursion. I'll list it in the options section of the primer though.
Carnage Altar seems really good. I'll be testing it. The only reason behind the sacrifice outlets I'm currently running is they have no activation cost.

They don't play them in My playgroup but I'll list land destruction lands in options

I know. I plan to cover this more in the playing the deck section
Consider yourself (and decklist) added to the EDH zombie primer...clearly there are people more willing than me to try every zombie out...
nice job

Given up magic because a)its a waste of money b)it sucks the joy out of life c)im doing more interesting things than tapping pieces of plastic that have no intrinsic value.
I encourage you to do the same. Instead of FNM try Friday Night Something Spontaneous. Instead of thousands of hours and dollars on plastic imagine it with a significant other or friends sharing something meaningful. I randomly typed a new password, so bon voyage itches i encourage you to follow suit! Cheers
The reason I mention mystifying maze is a lot of people play that card in my group because it's a poor man's maze of ith. That's one of the main reasons I don't run her in my decks but I have a few copies and have wanted to try her bad.
A pet favourite of mine for MBC is Imp's Mischief. Nobody ever sees it coming. Anyways, I recommend it to you, because eventually some jerk is going to respond to Phage by Putrefying your Torpor Orb.

Awesome deck. Is Lich's Mirror really worth it though? I understand it keeps you from losing the game, but what do you really accomplish?
Say you have a full hand, 40 life, seven lands, and Lich's Mirror. You cast Phage. Lich's Mirror happens, now you have a full hand, half your starting life total, no lands, and your general is shuffled into your library. Am I missing something? I just don't see how it accomplishes anything...
...unless, of course, you want to donate your Lich's Mirror and add this Phage-themed card to make your opponent get stuck in an endless loop of losing the game, in negative unbounded fashion. ^^

Option 2: Sundial of the Infinite (respond to the lose the game trigger by ending the turn)
Option 3: Give an opponent Abyssal Persecutor by sacrificing it when You have Endless Whispers out
Option 4: Torpor Orb (stops the lose the game trigger from happening)
Option 5: Let Phage get countered by Thrull Wizard, Withering Boon or Nether Void and go to the graveyard then get Her back with Volrath's Stronghold or Unholy Grotto

Scrying Sheets - An awesome source of card advantage at the small cost of a land drop
Unholy Grotto - Another Volrath's Stronghold for the deck with the minor setback of only recurring the zombies
Cabal Coffers - One of the best lands in a mono black deck. The man You can generate of this thing guts nuts quickly
Deserted Temple - This land is in here primarily as a combo peice with Cabal Coffers and Rings of Brighthearth
Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth - Makes those colorless lands tap for black mana as well
Volrath's Stronghold - some much needed creature recursion, a must since one of the ways to get Phage into play is counter Her and grab Her out of the graveyard
Reliquary Tower - You draw a lot of cards playing this deck. Its nice not having to discard them
Abyssal Persecutor - A decent sized body but best given to Your opponent via a sacrifice outlet and Endless Whispers
Thrull Wizard - Another way to stop Phage killing You is to use His ability to counter Her then get Her back from the graveyard
Nirkana Revenant - A mana doubler. She also doubles as a great body to hook Whispersilk Cloak on to thanks to the pump ability
Bloodgift Demon - Phyrexian Arena with a large flying body
Dimir House Guard - One of the much needed Sacrifice outlets for the Endless Whispers tricks
Steel Hellkite - Removal on a big body. Also another great wearer of Whispersilk Cloak
Sadistic Hypnotist - A sacrifice outlet that doubles as discard
Graveborn Muse - A card draw engine
Necrotic Ooze - A great utility creature. It can fill in for half the creatures in the deck if they are in Your graveyard
Netherborn Phalanx - Wrecks token stratagies or tutors for a revelvant 6 drop
Guardian Beast - A fantasic answer to opponents trying to kill Your artifact based answers to Phage
Rune-Scarred Demon - A large body with a free Demonic Tutor attached
Diabolic Tutor - Demonic Tutor for twice the mana
Cruel Tutor - A worse Vampiric Tutor but still a good tutor
Diabolic Intent - Not only a tutor but also a way to sacrifice a guy for Endless Whispers tricks
Demonic Collusion - The only tutor with buyback. Really handy when You need more than one card at a time
Beseech the Queen - Probably the worst tutor in the deck but still needed
Increasing Ambition - another much needed reusable tutor
All is Dust - a reset that leaves Your important artifacts standing
Damnation, Mutilate and Black Sun's Zenith- Sometimes You just wanna blow dudes up
Dimir Machinations - This can ruins somebodys top deck tutor or top activation. It can also tutor for a 3 drop if If You don't need it
Brainspoil - Some spot removal that can be used as a tutor for a 5 drop
Yawgmoth's Will - Arguably the most broken black card ever
Sorin Markov - Like Liliana every option is good with Him too
Endless Whispers - Used in conjunction with a sacrifice outlet this lets You either give somebody Abyssal Persecutor so You can play Phage or give somebody Phage to kill them
Phyrexian Arena - A card draw engine
Necropotence - The black card draw engine. Add Ivory Tower to the mix to recoup the life
Imp's Mischief - A great defensive spell if somebody tries to kill Your answer to Phage killing You
Withering Boon - Used to counter Phage
Shred Memory - Some graveyard hate that can double as a tutor if need be
Gauntlet of Power and Caged Sun - Mana doublers which are great and dude pump which isn't so relevant
Extraplanar Lens - Mana Doubling at the cost of a land
Crystal Ball - It serves the same role as top only not quite as well
Scroll Rack - You draw a lot of cards playing this deck. If You don't like what You see this lets You see a lot more
Expedition Map - Several of the non basic lands in this deck are important. This helps insure You find them
Mind's Eye - A great source of card draw
Planar Portal - A tutor every turn at 6 mana its easily done in this deck too
Darksteel Plate and Shield of Kaldra - The other line of protection (apart from shroud or hexproof) is to make Your guys indestructible. These are the equipment for that job
Whispersilk Cloak - The shroud is great but the real plus here is unblockable. It turn Phage into one shot death
Swiftfoot Boots - Hexproof and haste is a fantastic combination for most of the dudes in this deck
Rings of Brighthearth - Has a lot of interactions in the deck but is primarily here for the infinite mana combo
Ivory Tower - Some much needed life gain.
Altar of Dementia - A sacrifice outlet for Endless Whispers ticks. Also a fun way to ruin somebody's top deck tutor
Nevinyrral's Disk and Oblivion Stone - Sometimes You gotta blow stuff up
Crucible of Worlds- Volrath's Stronghold and Unholy Grotto are both important for recurring Phage. This allows them to be retrieved if something happens to them
Gate to Phyrexia - A good multipurpose card. It's a sacrifice outlet and it's artifact destruction. I highly reccomend this for builds running Chalice of the Void
Pithing Needle and Phyrexian Revoker - Mindslaver effects are this decks worst nightmare. These are very cheap answers to them
It that Betrays - If You can donate this away with Endless Whispers it gives You another way to get a kill by sacrificing Phage if the Endless Whispers gets killed
Hall of the Bandit Lord - Another way to give Phage haste
Exsanguinate - Some life gain to make up for all the life You spend on card draw and tutors. With infinite mana possible with this deck it can win You the game on its own
Vesuva - Copy one of Your own like a coffers or if Your opponent has something better You do too
Decree of Pain - A dude sweeper with some built in card advantage
Fetchlands - They help thin the deck out and give You a reshuffle when You don't like what You see with Top or Scroll Rack

"When Phage the Untouchable enters the battlefield, if you didn't cast it from your hand, you lose the game."
Yeah, I've got that covered
