I bought Mirror Mastery when I first started playing EDH, but took it apart, because I always had a target painted on my head because the generals were powerful and my decks weren't quite strong enough to take it. Now that I have the cards and deckbuilding knowledge for it, here is my take on an Animar combo/aggro deck. I'm currently in Italy until July, so I won't be able to trade very much to get the cards I need to complete this deck, but all of the cards in here are definitely within reach, if not by trading, then reasonably priced.
About my meta:
My meta is a bunch of long-time friends who have been playing magic casually for years. Usually one player plays either Rafiq elfball or Olivia vampire reanimator, and another plays Grimgrin Zombies or Rith tokens. I also play 1v1 against most of the time, but every once in a while we can all get together and play. Also, every so often, I play with a skilled Jhoira/Momir Vig player and a kind of new Ghave player. I have a great Uril, the Miststalker deck, but want a solid multiplayer deck to play against them.
Creatures: 1 Urabrask the Hidden (hasty creatures) 1 Edric, Spymaster of Trest (card draw/politics, traded mine away) 1 Steel Hellkite (repeatable removal after combat, potentially free) 1 Elvish Archdruid (ramp/pump with elves, have 11 in the deck) 1 Vesuvan Shapeshifter (free to play morphed, 2 mana general kill or creature copy) 1 Erayo, Soratami Ascendant (it’s easy to cast 4 spells per turn, but once it flips, it’s easily destroyed) 1 Augury Owl (Helps the curve, skullclampable, and I have an Italian one) 1 Kamahl, Fist of Krosa (great wrath protection and pump, color/mana intensive though) 1 Gilded Drake (I just picked one up, not sure what to cut)
Non-Creatures: 1 Chord of Calling (excellent card, convoke is just a bonus, but what to cut?) 1 Long-Term Plans (tutor, can I take something out for it though?) 1 Acquire (stealy stealy, but non-creature) 1 Pemmin's Aura (potential infinite mana with Wirewood Channeler and infinite green/red with Bloom Tender. Also good protection for Animar) 1 Time Warp (with Eternal Witness and some way to bounce/copy, infinite turns, strong possibility here) 1 Whim of Volrath (change Animar’s protections per game and get rid of landwalk) 1 Scroll Rack (to replace brainstorm, which is mostly in to get rid of cards I don’t need in hand) 1 Chain Reaction (Red’s Wrath of God) 1 Blasphemous Act (Red’s cheap Wrath) 1 Capsize (this card is just an amazing infinite mana outlet and answer all around) 1 Evacuation (need more removal, I think) 1 Spell Crumple (The tuck feels too powerful to pass up) 1 Hinder (see above) 1 Dissipate (exile effects, same as above)
Zoetic Cavern - offers a free animar counter and bounce shenanigans with Cloudstone Curio but I am trying to keep colorless mana production at a minimum, and I often found myself wishing it was another land. Akroma, Angel of Fury - french vanilla beater…not sure if it’s worth a slot. Will re-evaluate this card later.
Original dual/shock/fetch lands - Unfortunately, money is an object. Edric, Spymaster of Trest - Of course, I traded mine away once I gave up on building an Edric deck. I will try to trade for another. Dryad Arbor - While it is tutorable with Momir Vig, Simic Visionary, it doesn't contribute to Animar's counters since it's not a spell. Palinchron - While infinite mana is nice, it doesn’t really help me as much as it could on its own.
Animar can play very much like a toolbox combo general, using creatures as its spells and abusing come into play abilities to pump the general and make everything cheaper. With enough counters on him, You can cast colorless creatures for free and multiple expensive creatures per turn. His built-in protection also lends itself to combo building, as black and white are the dominant removal/tuck colors.
I’ve decided to go less combo/Cloudstone Curio and more beats, so at least there’s a little more variation between my games. I’d also like to add a token generator of some sort to help keep up with Rhys in the Rafiq deck and Army of the Damned in the Grimgrin deck in my meta. I’m not sure if I’m getting enough creatures out fast enough to keep up with their aggro decks.
Personally, I’m a bit worried I’m focusing too much on the toolbox/combo aspect and not enough on the wincons. In a fishbowl, it can really explode around turns 6-9, but I’m not sure if that’s quite fast enough in actual play with disruption. Any tips, suggestions, or critiques would be awesome, I really want to build this deck, and streamlining it for play would give me a fun deck to play in multiplayer.
From what I understand, my CMC is kind of high at 4.17. I’m definitely getting to a point where I have more cards that I like than cards I want to cut, so if anyone has any suggestions for what the weaker cards are here, it would be greatly appreciated.
With all of these bombs we’re getting in AVR, I’m going to have a lot of changing around to do by the end of the summer.
Edit: Added current decklist, as the one I have is my current feasible end result when I get home.
Having fishbowled with this deck more, I'm really happy with where it is and I'm excited to play it once I get a chance to. The only issue I have right now is early mana fixing, but unfortunately I can't really afford the shocks/duals/fetches and I'm worried about my ramp if I replace basics with m10/innistrad lands. Any suggestions here?
Use as few CIPT lands as possible. I'd cut the Karoo (bounce) duals and Threshold cards. Competitive Animar decks use Mox Diamond, Thran Quarry, and City of Brass. I'd use Kessig Wolf Run over Madblind Mountain. You can probably find a better card than Shinka, too.
In time you should get all the lands you listed if you're serious about this deck. At the very least, you should work on getting the 3 fetches that benefit the deck most right now.
How's Forgotten Ancient doing in your deck? I have one but I've never thought about putting it in my Animar....
I haven't gotten a chance to playtest the deck in an actual game yet, but it makes your opponents play around it to not put counters on it, and if you play persist creatures (which I don't right now) then it gives you more uses of them. This would be a hard cut for me right now, and even if it eats removal, which it very well may, that’s one less removal spell they have for your other beaters.
If I can get my hands on Winding Canyon, that's absolutely going in. Prime Time would go in too, but he and Kozilek are both just too expensive for me right now. I'm not sure which tap for mana creature I'd take out, to be honest, other than maybe the birds, since it's great early game, but its value definitely depreciates as the game goes on, whereas the others' (other than maybe Joraga Treespeaker, which has Elf synergy) don't.

I changed around the lands for the end result (within reach in a few months) deck, and it definitely did play more smoothly, so thank you for that. I unfortunately can’t afford a Mox Diamond right now, so unless I can trade someone for one in time, that won’t make it on my list. I rather like Madblind Mountain for the shuffle effect, as with Oracle and garruk’s horde out, if I don’t have what I need on top, I can get another shot at it.
Bumpity. I made a handful of changes, added a few more wincons. I'm not sure about its power level without Animar in play though, it might need more lands?

Notable exclusions:
Zoetic Cavern - offers a free animar counter and bounce shenanigans with Cloudstone Curio but I am trying to keep colorless mana production at a minimum, and I often found myself wishing it was another land.
Akroma, Angel of Fury - french vanilla beater…not sure if it’s worth a slot. Will re-evaluate this card later.

Winding Canyon to cast all your creatures during your opponents' turns.
I'd add in Kozilek, Butcher of Truth too because its' casting bonus can easily be abused with your general and some bounce engine on the field.
Hoverguard Sweeper looks really nice on paper.
