Hey everyone! Here's the story: I love magic but have only gotten my girlfriend to play a handful of times. I've offered to make her every theme deck I could think of that could be "cute" or "girly" (elves, faeries, Pegasus, unicorns, cats, etc) yet none have interested her. I was reading the other day that it has been speculated innistrad will be a "Victorian" themed set. As both her and I like steampunk fashion/style and sensibilities, I offered to construct her a steampunk themed deck. At this she seemed agreeable to learning to play; but only if she had a steampunk deck. So I turn to you, dear commander community, for your best ideas. The first thing I need help with is picking a suitable general. And of course all suggestions must be particularly flavorful. (ie. Gears, gadgets, Victorian era clothing etc) also, what colors best fit the steampunk style? This will be an ongoing project to first build a list before purchasing the cards, and I'll try to keep the card List updated. Thankyou in advance for all suggestions.
A list of cards on theme. There appears to be two ways to go, dark vampires or gadgets/tech:
Well, I can't begin to comment on card choices, as this is a bit beyond my scope, however, I do know enough about what I do know to say that you are in luck in terms of making this deck happen.
Izzet, the UR guild from Ravnica, has a lot of steampunk flavor to it, both in how it uses its colors, and its artwork.
I would search for U/R theme Izzet decks and start from there.
As for Victorian-style clothing, the closest I can think of is from Mercadian Masques. There may be some cards from that set you can use, but not much that has a particularly "steampunk" feel.
Myr occupy the intersection of "technological" and "cute" quite well, but like most Mirrodin-flavored cards don't have a "steampunk" feel either. Maybe some of the Goblins from that plane. I don't know if they count as "cute" or not.
I gotta agree pretty much anything Izzet themed, and most artifacts, so we're looking at a Blue/Red deck most likely. Aside from that Chandra and her goggles are really kind of needed, Tibor and Lumia could make a good general art wise, and whatever the new potentially Red/Blue planeswalker leaked in DotP 2012 does might be useful he certainly looks steam punky and looks very Izzet themed. Ral Zarek I believe was the name. I'll dig in the rumor mill and see if I can find the posts.

I second that motion^
Mishra make a good magic/mechanic Steampunkish general. The Block that first have domain, had some I think. …
Let us know how's it go?
Definitely Izzet League (UR) from the Ravnica block:
The Izzet League is full of genius mad scientists that perform crazy experiments that go wrong a lot because they're in a hurry and overlook details. Perfect blue/red flavor.
I'd say Nin, the Pain Artist for a commander. She fits well. Look up some of the decklists on here for good synergies/combos.
A little more Izzet flavor from the wiki:
The Izzet League keep the water systems, the heating systems, and every other system of modern convenience and infrastructure running in Ravnica. This, however, is mundane tedium to an Izzet.
This guild is home to the masters of theoretical science, invention, and spellcraft. Their nature is a passion for discovery and knowledge, reckless curiosity, their brilliant minds jumping from one subject to another as whimsy sees fit. Many members of the Izzet could be adequately described as benign mad scientists.
Niv-Mizzet is the leader and parun of the Izzet League. He is the most intelligent being on the plane, far exceeding mortal comprehension. However, his flippant nature keeps him from simply taking over. Running the world would be tedious, after all, and Niv-Mizzet hates to be bored. He is also well-known for being the only remaining dragon on the planet; there are numerous dragon-kin, like wyverns or drakes, but as far as true dragons go, Niv-Mizzet is it. He has made numerous lesser clones of himself for unknown purposes, though his exceeding vanity may be a factor.
The fabric of the universe is starting to tear away as we speak XD.
On topic, I would say the deck should definetely include U/R mainly because of izzet cards and, or course, for all of the chandra iterations. As for a general, I think either Tibor and lumia or perhaps Jhoria of the ghitu could be the steampunk general.
Great suggestions so far! Color and theme. That leaked planeswalker looks like a steampunk boss! I'm leaning towards jhoira just because it's blue red and possibly the only cute card. Lol
Edit: Jaya Ballard, Task Mage has goggles like Chandra (or should I say Chandra has goggles like Jaya...)

On Mythic Rares: "What's next, Wizards will print six golden Black Lotuses and randomly place them in boosters, and if someone gets one, they get to tour the Wizards facility?"
Hmmm, after seeing some of these Innnistrad spoilers, I'm tempted to include black in the color identity for some of these victorian-esque vampires, and the new liliana.
Great suggestions, this is going to definitely be an artifact heavy deck with lots of Gadgets, I've been compiling a list and it's nearing 200 cards. It's going to take a while to trim this down, and then to comb through the new spoilers as they come out. Very much a work in progress.
I'll be posting a mega list soon of all suggestions and the cards i've dug up. Thanks again for all the help!
This is a little different but it made me think about something we did in the casual forum not to long ago. May not work for EDH but she may like the idea for a regular deck.
If she is a fan of abney park surely tine travel would feel steampunk as well and given some of the colors mentioned before perhaps jhoira of the ghitu would work. If you go esper colored to support artifacts then Sharuum is the best choice. There is a large amount of filigree in steampunk design. Also arcum dagson could work as well if you commision someone to do dr steel for the art.

Lol indeed as you can see if you view my profile I am no stranger to the steampunk subculture. My biggest suggestion perhaps is to teach her the basics of magic first with standard decks and perhaps duels 2012 then allow her to craft her own deck because nothing is as steampunk as diy stuff. Don't purchase precons but craft your own decks. If I ever purchase a precon it doesn't stay intact in any recognizable form unless sentiments override and unless I want a few easy decks to teach magic with or play against my youngest brother.

Edit: http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=331944 there we go. Ral Zarek info, dunno if he is Izzet but he certainly looks like a steampunk version of a planeswalker.
Your deck needs Steamflogger Boss.

I'm thinking along the lines of vampire outcasts
Maybe if there's enough good cards in the coming sets I'll go mono black vampires, as there's quite a few with period clothes.
