I have been anticipating Mimeoplasm for awhile now, and I am so happy to have gotten him. Here is my first deck based around 3 tenants: Mill/Reanimate/POWER RUSH. I support these tenants with lots of draw and counter stuff, and utility creatures suited to destroy stuff, prevent stuff, and help me reuse cards (and some fun ones I like). Here is the decklist:
I haven’t had much time to test it out yet, but it seems sound to me (as a ‘first draft’). I don’t tend to use blatant combos, but many of these cards have synergy (and I’d appreciate any other synergies to be noted that are not in the above list)
I recognize the difficulty of balancing the three strategies well, so if anyone can:
A) Give some advice on how best to balance these three out
B) Recommend cards that work towards these ends or support them
C) Recommend cards to switch out that AREN’T worth TONS of money (since I am broke ☺)
D) Give, in general, constructive, helpful criticism, I’d appreciate it.
Some cards I’d like to fit in/may work well:
2. Polymorph
3. Scythe Specter
4. Stitch Together
5. Sadistic Sacrament
6. Blue Sun’s Zenith
7. Scion of Darkness
8. Azusa, Lost but Seeking
9. Dread Return
Last two questions:
1. What is the big deal with Oblivion Stone in EDH?
2. If I have a Jace, The Mind Sculptor, should I put him in?
With running 3 spot reanimations, Mimeoplasm, Wrexy, Geth, Graverobber, and Vulturous, what about a big one-shot mill card like Traumatize or Tunnel Vision?
I personally don't care for Graverobber due to his having a specific condition that actually conflicts with your mill tactics before he can reanimate. As for Szadek, his cmc is just too high. Here's the changes I would be inclined to make:
I am not the biggest fan of traumatize (it is often to easy to help them get a card they need into a graveyard aka anger/brawn/fear/wonder/etc, or reanimate targets/ or flashback stuff), but I am inclined to Tunnel Vision. And it is cheap!
Dimir Doppelganger! Totally forgot about that guy. Hmm...I was using the graveborn to exile cards and then flip him to steal, but your right. I like the doppleganger better.
Szadek IS expensive, but can't I just reanimate him, or use him to finish people off mid-late game?
When milling, there is always the risk that you will inadvertantly help your opponent, but if your build concentrates on totally capitalizing on your opponent's graveyard, then you stand to gain more than lose. Heavy milling of your opponent would probably warrant the inclusion of even more gy cards though like Memory Plunder, Necromancy, Puppeteer Clique, Coffin Queen, Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni, Lord of Extinction, and Guiltfeeder.
When I am trying to combo out of my own gy, I use Traumatize, Tunnel Vision, and Hermit Druid + lots of draw/discard spells. The builds are decklisted in spoilers linked in my sig. I ended up building two versions of mill/reanimate because I could never strike a good enough balance with utilizing both my opponent's graveyard and my own. Now I either do one or the other depending on which version I sleeve up before I go to the gameshop.
With Graverobber, I always found myself in a position where I had to exile one opponent's graveyard before he flipped and I found it too clunking dedicating slots to Bojuka Bog and Relic of Progenitus when I had so many other ways to abuse graveyards already in the build. Maybe I was just unlucky with Graverobber, but it never did much for me.
I've never played Szadek. In fact, he's the only big mill spell I don't use. I suppose he could be a good finisher with a Mimeoplasm combo or self-reanimation though. He could fit in my reanimator deck that uses a snuggy, Fireshrieker, Mask of Riddles, and Profane Command to get combat damage through. There's a buch of fun creatures with abilities that say "Whenever [this creature] deals combat damage...". Not sure I would use him without Doubling Season though.
I will probably play a whole bunch more before I dedicate one way or the other (assuming I even find I have to). Some of those cards are really excellent, but I only have a few of them :(. I'll see if I can get some play and them out.
Hm...Bojuka bog AND Relic? Why would one use both unless you were against another mill/reanimator? Wouldn't a bunch of your own creatures manage graveyard stuff like that?
I HAVE used Szadek to scary effect, but he is limited by cost. This is why I tend to Mimioplasm him out from the graveyard, and combine with a huge creature for massive mills (ala Artisan of Kozilek) He has limits, but I think he is really good in EDH.
I don't love ridiculous combo's, since they tend to make the game unfun when they hit. I try to stay away from stuff like Infinite mana+exsanguiate.
I do still run Bog and Relic occasionally when I tutor up Mesmeric Orb and Dreamborn Muse early and load everyone's bin. As games progress, I find that most players are able to position themselves to utilize their graveyards effectively regardless of their colors or build. I've been hit hard lategame with cards like Marshal's Anthem, so eventually I like to remove graveyards before they turn on me. Graverobber might actually come in useful with a heavy mill build to exile certain cards though, especially with popular cards like Mnemonic Wall and Eternal Witness lurking in every other deck just waiting to recur a combo peice.
I would run combos according to your meta. My playgroup has some cutthroat decks in it, so I keep infinite mana combos in a sideboard for more competitive games. Tunnel Vision + tuck spells is a nice one though to end games that are getting too long. It's not too viscious either, killing the table on turn 5 or 6 or some such nonsense.
I hear what you are saying. I still am working the mill/reanimate balance, so we'll see what happens.
I like the Tunnel+hinder/crumple/condemn etc. It wouldn't hit till turn 5 earliest, and the probability is very small. Y'know which I was talking about.
Also, what are your thoughts on Riftsweeper, Blighted Agent+Artisan of Kozilek, and/or Death's shadow?
Not sure about Riftsweeper. Honestly I've never seen it in a build.
The Blighted Agent combo is good, but on it's own Blighted Agent is sorta useless. I thinks it's best in a build loaded with draw/discard or attrition/sac/token so that it has more use than just with the combo.
Artisan is good with Blighted Agent. I would go with Terastodon over Death's Shadow because it's more useful on it's own.
Death's Shadow is more for the Triskelion combo. Lord of Extinction can work better in multiplayer for that one though, potentially killing the entire table the turn it comes out.
Well, if I understand Riftssweeper right, it lets you get back exiled cards, a + in EDH.
Thank you for the layout of deck options, though I think i will stick somewhat to my original balance list until otherwise needed. And wouldn't Oona be amazing regardless of the token sacking? You could use her to mill like crazy.
I agree, Terastadon is more useful on its own, but you can't just throw it in the graveyard turn 1-2 like you can with Death's Shadow. Technically, I think Phyrexian Dreadnought would be better, but I can't get one right now.
How would the Triskelion combo work?
Also, would Putrefax+Death's Shadow/Artisan of Kozilek/Phyrexian Dreadnaught be a good idea?
I don't quite understand lord of extinction. Wouldn't you need to take him and his ability, thus losing any other board destruction ability?
Riftssweeper is quite cool, when you want to use your key card twice (say triskelion), with some graveyard recursion you can use it multiple time. it's not an absolute must but I have been happy with it.
Troll Ascetic- this guy is an ant among giants. Hex Parasite- so situational. He'll be a dead card a lot of the time. Very good with Decree of Silence though, as you can imagine Corrupted Conscience- You can do better than enchantment-based removal. You're in black. Also has no synergy with the Blob unless you're making him an evasive 10/10, which kills in 2-3 turns already. Forbid- you won't be able to hit the buyback often in this deck without more card draw See Beyond- you can do a lot better than this- you're in blue! Try Recurring Insight or Blue Sun's Zenith or at least Brainstorm. Glissa- You can't just throw her in here without a plan to abuse her. You shouldn't spend an entire card on just a blocker either. Be a threat!
I'd suggest you find a lot more room for spot removal. All I see there is Putrefy and Corrupted Conscience plus some wraths. What do you do if your opponent plays Consecrated Sphinx or Primeval Titan and you don't have one of your four removal spells (two wraths)? Scoop? You should pack some more spot removal- even a lousy Go For the Throat would go a long way. Shriekmaw is another all-star, since giving your general a 187 and fear is no joke when 21 damage kills a player.
Troll Ascetic was mainly there for Utility (i.e. Mimioplasm)
Hex Parasite I was using to deal with token related decks, planeswalkers, and the fact I could get him with Trinket mage if need be
Corrupted Conscience - stealing a creature and giving it infect (i.e. ulamog?). Or if I give it to mine, he can blast through with infect damage.
See beyond was a cheap spell to let me tuck away, but maybe I'll give blue sun Zenith a try.
Glissa was mainly there as a scary early blocker and as a recurer for people who killed my artifacts (i.e. mana fixers, Sol Ring, etc)> But I see your point.
Don't mean to fight back, just want to clarify why I was using these cards. Some of your points are very helpful.
I think Forced Fruition helps opponents way more than it helps you. Playing it pretty much takes your turn too, it had better be Time Stretch awesome at that mana cost.
I found from playtesting I'd rather gather Mime targets from my own graveyard since the quality is usually better. I went with more self mill to get to my threats.
Lightning Greaves is essential but I can tutor up a Gaea's Revenge easier and it can't be targeted in response to being equiped.
Okay, so another hiatus and I have come back and edited my deck. I am going to include below why I changed some of the things, and mention a couple of a problems.
I changed some of the focus to include more of my own graveyard reincarnation, as well as draw stuff. I still need to insert guys with haste/infect, but I am still balancing out some of the issues with mill and reanimation in the same deck.
Couple of problems:
1)No guys with haste. Need some good recommendations (maybe Gaea's Revenge and Skythirix?)
2) I can't seem to balance out counterspell and destroy stuff. Maybe put in more destroy stuff and fewer counterspells?
1)No guys with haste. Need some good recommendations (maybe Gaea's Revenge and Skythirix?)
2) I can't seem to balance out counterspell and destroy stuff. Maybe put in more destroy stuff and fewer counterspells?
And of course, all other suggestions are welcome.
1)Haste is in high demand for Mimeoplasm combos. Aside from the two you mention, the only other one that seems decent enough with an ooze combo is Nether Traitor to grant haste and shadow. You could try Concordant Crossroads. Luckily, they'll be some new boots coming out with M12.
Recommended cuts? Snakeform. I'd probably cut Dreamborn Muse and Memory Erosion too since you are mostly trying to combo out of your own GY, and these spells have potential to actually help your opponents more than they help you. I don't think you have enough artifacts to justify Glissa either.
Well! I got so lucky yesterday trading I got a Jace Beleren (always awesome) and a Jace, Memory Adept. I have considered putting both in, but we'll see.
I also got Skithyrix and Gaea's Revenge. They are going in somehow.
I got Beast Within, but Relic Crush does cost 5 without the same exile affect of Return to Dust. That's why I haven't used it before.
Ashes to Ashes! My new favorite removal spell. And Maelstrom Pulse is sorcery speed and only does one permanent (and i don't have one) so I am not putting it in right now.
I really don't like Mystic Snake for the same reason I don't like Draining whelk. Keeping 4 manna (of certain colors) open is a real pain. Cryptic Command is better (more options).
I wouldn't say I am trying to combo out of my own graveyard. Half my reanimate is for all graveyards. But I get the point. Let me try it out.
Hmm...I keep hearing Glissa hate and she hasn't helped me yet (though she has been good deterence. I'll switch out cards and update tonight at some point, hopefully.
I am having a tough time balancing my deck out as it. I have reanimate, along with infinite combos of practically everything you can imagine, draw, discard, mana, etc.
Back again! After more playtesting, I found I had the most fun when using my own graveyard and not milling, so I am going to be heavily editing the deck. Here is what I've changed:

Butcher of Malakir
Reassembling Skeleton

lord of extinction give *+1 counters to triskelion becasue he is a */* (and not 0/0), so if you "imprint" triskelion with a 120/120 lord of extinction: you win
And I really like Riftsweeper, just need to find mine.

Nope, he has characteristic defining ability which sets his p/t in whatever game zone hes in.
I really recommend Tunnel Vision and Hermit Druid to the build.
You have the mill combo with a tuck effect and you can also mill yourself and name Living Death.
I've been playtesting a lot and my killers usually are Gaea's Revenge and Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon as the imprinted creatures. Haste is very important.
Memory Jar and Intuition are other stars in my deck.

I liked See Beyond because it tucked away cards in my Rafiq deck, but maybe here the discard is worth it. Otherwise, good ideas.
I have a memory jar in my discard deck, maybe I'll switch it out.
A card I haven't seen mentioned in these sort of decks is Forced Fruition. Isn't it great for milling stuff?
I am trying to get a Skythirix, but no luck. Like the Gaea's Revenge idea, though. I plan on putting a greaves in, which should also help with haste.
I found from playtesting I'd rather gather Mime targets from my own graveyard since the quality is usually better. I went with more self mill to get to my threats.
Lightning Greaves is essential but I can tutor up a Gaea's Revenge easier and it can't be targeted in response to being equiped.

2) Moar counterspells! Mystic Snake is pretty good with all the reanimate spells you have. Get him on a Mimic Vat and you rock. Glen Elendra Archmage would be superb for this deck too. Cryptic Command is always a winner as well.
...Moar removal! Relic Crush is bang for the buck. Beast Within and Maelstrom Pulse are great utility. Slaughter is instant speed and has a buyback which is awesome. Ashes to Ashes sends x2 creatures to exile. Not too shabby.
Recommended cuts? Snakeform. I'd probably cut Dreamborn Muse and Memory Erosion too since you are mostly trying to combo out of your own GY, and these spells have potential to actually help your opponents more than they help you. I don't think you have enough artifacts to justify Glissa either.
