Check out "The Lion's Lair", the article series where I specifically talk about custom card design with the intent to help you get better at it. The article index is always updated with the latest content. It's a day just like any other one in Oreskos. When a new Leonin is born, is he a baby or is he a cub? Does it matter at all? In the end, Theran Leonin live in a community isolated from human poleis, so they are what they are. They aren't bound by human definitions. What will this young male become? A warrior, like his father? A trader? An adventurer? There's something in his eyes, like the glimmer of a new dawn. That must mean something: whatever he'll become, success will be with him. That's a good omen, and there's no need for Heliod or another of his kind to reveal that. Who is Heliod? He's no one here! But this newborn will become someone instead, his parents were sure. "How shall we call him?" his mother asked to his father. He answered: "His name shall be..." and the whistle of a gentle breeze came to seal this moment forever.

At the beginning of your upkeep, if you control another Cat creature, put a +1/+1 counter on Leonin Newborn. He will grow well as long as there is someone else of his kind to take care of him.

Art: http://yukilapin.deviantart.com/art/Lion-Cub-Sketch-192519026 Main challenge: design a nonlegendary creature card that introduces a new character never seen before in Magic (though it can be from an already existing plane), even in generic terms. It can't be a double-faced card. It can't be or interact in any way with legendary permanents, legendary cards, or with planeswalkers. It doesn't need to reference your character's name in card name or flavor text, even though it still can if you wish.
Please don't include any notes. Posting any card-related notes will be cause of disqualification this month. Use only the flavor elements on the card itself to tell your character's story. Those are: card name, art (if you choose to make a render, in which case remember to give credit to the artist), subtypes, flavor text, mechanical flavor (telling flavor through the card's mechanics). Art description is the only thing that's allowed outside the card, but only if you don't have a render. And even if you have an art description, please keep it short.
Subchallenge 1: Your card is common or uncommon.
Subchallenge 2: Your creature's power and toughness are both 3 or less.
• For subchallenge 2, your creature's power needs to be 3 or less AND its toughness too. If only one of them is 3 or less, this subchallenge is failed. For example, a 2/2, 3/3, 3/2, or 2/3 is ok, while a 4/3, 3/4, 4/2, or 2/5 is not.
No, because it can have power and/or toughness greater than three. To pass the challenge, the card must not be ever able to have power or toughness greater than three naturally by itself (of course, if you use Giant Growth on about any creature you'll have power or toughness greater than three, but that requires another card, so it doesn't matter).
Also, something that grows over time is fine as long as its starting power and toughness are both three or less. See my Leonin Newborn for example. Basically, you have to think what its power and toughness are as it enters the battlefield. Tarmogoyf may enter the battlefield as a 4/5, my Leonin Newborn enters the battlefield as a 0/1 even though it can also become a 4/5 but with time.
Design -
(X/3) Appeal: Do the different player psychographics (Timmy/Johhny/Spike) have a use for the card? (X/3) Elegance: Is the card easily understandable at a glance? Do all the flavor and mechanics combined as a whole make sense?
Development - (X/3) Viability: How well does the card fit into the color wheel? Does it break or bend the rules of the game? Is it the appropriate rarity? (X/3) Balance: Does the card have a power level appropriate for contemporary constructed/limited environments without breaking them? Does it play well in casual and multiplayer formats? Does it create or fit into a deck/archetype? Does it create an oppressive environment?
Creativity - (X/3) Uniqueness: Has a card like this ever been printed before? Does it use new mechanics, ideas, or design space? Does it combine old ideas in a new way? Overall, does it feel “fresh”? (X/3) Flavor: Does the name seem realistic for a card? Does the flavor text sound professional? Do all the flavor elements synch together to please Vorthos players?
Polish - (X/3) Quality: Points deducted for incorrect spelling, grammar, and templating. (X/2) *Main Challenge: Was the main challenge satisfied? Was it approached in a unique or interesting way? Does the card fit the intent of the challenge? (X/2) Sub Challenges: One point awarded per satisfied subchallenge condition.
Total: X/25
