This month’s theme is ”alternate ways to play”. We’ll explore what happens when the different way is not the exception, but the rule. Also, in the spirit of Fate Reforged, in every round you’ll face a choice. (Note: the choice you make in each round will NOT influence those you’ll make in other rounds in any way.)
I’ll take this opportunity to link to my article series about custom card design.
What has wings to fly, is made of metal and is not Steel Hellkite? But of course, a plane! This round we’ll be chasing planes! (Yes, I’m that bad at puns...)
Challenge: Choose a plane from the original Planechase or Planechase 2012. You can’t choose Arkhos (which became Theros), Mongseng (which became Tarkir) or any plane that has been the main setting of at least one Magic card set (a detailed list of allowed planes is included within the spoiler below). Then, choose one –
• Design a new Plane card for a location on the chosen plane.
• Design a regular card that is flavorfully from the chosen plane. Name the plane you chose in your submission.
For extra clarity, you’ll be designing just one card, which will be your choice out of the two given options.
The list of planes included in one or both editions of Planechase is as follows:
Design deadline: Sunday, February 22st 23:59 ET (3:59 GMT).
NOTE: The deadline has been extended by a day because with only one hour and a half left we still have only half the cards submitted.
Everyone critiques everyone else. Critiques will start immediately after the design deadline, even if I won’t immediately post to declare the design phase closed.

Critiques (Not final until deadline) netn10
I like this as a super splashy mythic but It has two main things wrong:
- Reshape doesn't look like a mechanic that could ever see print. It is unusable on commons, due to both instant speed and mentioning CMC.
- I don't really understand what is red about this card.
The discard/draw effect is exciting and plays well with the mass reshape but has issues where you can negate it by reshaping this card (as it wont have the ability)
The mass reshape also seems fun but like I mentioned earlier this should be a stand alone card rather than a mechanic.
Some decent ideas but needs tuning and cleaning up.
Moss_Elemental
The flavor of a bookie is kinda fun though it feels a little off that he can pump/fight himself.
I wonder if the instant speed ability here is too much but since this seems to be designed for commander it is probably fine.
Otherwise a clean topdown design with nice flavor text but not the most exciting mechanics.
Legend
A plane!
Difficult to judge the power level of the planes but this is probably fine.
I like the flavor you have created.
Ninja Caterpie
A decently efficient rare that really encourages attacking.
The ability doesn't look too exciting which is a problem for a rare but is actually rather strong.
I like the flavor text. But the card feels so generic that it could belong on any plane, thus not really fulfilling the challenge.
Antny223
An interesting inspired variant that acts as a kind of level up mechanic using tapping instead of mana sinks.
The card itself is fun, splashy and showcases the flavor of the card well.
I'm not 100% sure how well it fits the plane you chose but its certainly within the realms of possibility considering the abstract sculpted look of the plane.
My only complaint is the first strike and/or stats don't feel right.
RaikouRider
Certainly not my favorite type of effect to push as it tends to get abused. However it does a good job fitting the plane and hosing troublesome lands.
Could see this in a commander product but would be hesitant on putting it in a standard set.
Moss_Elemental - I really, really like the flavor of a bookie in an arena plane. However, this card seems too good in limited and the idea was done a before a little better as Drooling Groodion.
Legend - It is hard to judge a planes. This plane seems flavorful and balance, and I like it.
Ninja Caterpie - This caption is strong and flavorful. He even seems playable in standard. I like it a lot.
Antny223 - The most innovative card here. Meditate really make s my brain explode with the possibilities. Full score for me.
Doombringer - I like this card as a "build around me" card..it Not that creative, but I can dig it.
RaikouRide - This card seems pretty narrow to me. Should have cantrip or something else.
Top 3:
First Place - Antny223 Second Place - Ninja Caterpie Third Place - Doombringer
11PM crits incoming (I'll reassess in the morning if I feel more awake)
netn10
Transforming plane gets transforming card, so that fits. I like the idea of reshape but I don't know if has enough play. The last ability works, but is too powerful even for a seven drop. This mechanic feels right for the colours picked though.
Moss_Elemental
The flavour is somewhat fantastic here, and I can instantly place this character within the setting chosen. The biggest issue is the ability is surely too cheap as written, and arguable it should other creatures only flavourwise.
Legend
Hmmmm. This is the point I admit to having very little planechase experience. I think this probably plays well, but I am reserved about the most fun aspect of this place (giving you a free permanent exiled) might miss around half the time. If you dropped the indestructibility and had it exile at more regular intervals, then I think this might work out better.
Ninja Caterpie
I think he's well designed and if he got through playtesting he'd be printed, but he isn't as innovative as some of the other cards we're seeing this round.
Doombringer
I like the design straight away, and my question is how do these work in real life. A 3/3 flyer for 4U is already playable, but potentially getting this guy for 4 less might just be too much of bargain. I'd almost suggest keeping this as a 3/3 for U when someone mills and balance by upping it's starting mana cost.
RaikouRider
I like this sort of land destruction, and I like potential space it opens up. The one thing is that I think this feels more green than red.
netn10: I like reshape as a mechanic, though it's probably something Wizards wouldn't print due to how complex it makes board states.
Moss_Elemental: Mana cost and cost of activated ability should probably be switched. Idea is fine, but the numbers should probably be tweaked in general on this thing.
Legend: The way I evaluate planes is would they actually be interesting to put in a planar deck as well as a shared planar deck. This seems to fit both well. The exile on the {Chaos} effect should probably be optional though.
Ninja Caterpie: Link your plane instead of just typing it in your post. Would help quite a bit. As far as the submission, I think this could be pushed a tad more. Limited bomb as is but could probably be made a 4/2.
Antny223: Is Meditate worded in such a way as to affect creatures that are already untapped? I feel what you're trying to do with that card is fine, but the mechanic itself needs clarification.
Doombringer: Great synergy with the plane, and I think this could see play in big formats.

Plane: Wildfire - Naar Isle
Magmatic Calamity 1RR
Sorcery {R}
Put a magma counter on each land. As long as a land has a magma counter on it, it gains "T: Add 1 to your mana pool" and loses all other abilities.
When the seas are made of magma instead of water, even the land itself is only temporary.

• The two public custom sets I've been part a part of the design team for:
"Brotherhood of Ormos" - Blog post with all info - set thread - design skeleton / card list || "Extinctia: Homo Evanuit" - Blog post with all info - set thread - card list spreadsheet
• "The Lion's Lair", my article series about MTG and custom card design in particular. Latest article here. Here is the article index. Rather outdated by now, and based on the old MCC rubric, but I'm leaving this here for anybody that might be interested anyway.
• My only public attempt at being a writer: the story of my Leonin custom planeswalker Jeff Lionheart. (I have a very big one that I'm working on right now but that's private for now, and I don't know if I will ever actually publish it, and I also have ideas for multiple future ones, including one where I'm going to reprise Jeff.)

So? Sultai Scavenger isn't exactly breaking formats.

A simple card with Reshape would have been much better.
Moss_Elemental
The flavor is good. But Folthar is just a little too good for limited.
Legend
As usual, you've designed the best card of the round.
Ninja Caterpie
Great card. Great flavor.
Antny223
Meditate has potential. But Patient Tactician is unbearably slow.
Doombringer
I really like the subtlety of the flavor.
RaikouRider
Should have went with 2RR. Decent fringe flavor connection.
1 Doombringer
2 Ninja Caterpie
3 RaikouRider
Top 3:
First Place - Antny223
Second Place - Ninja Caterpie
Third Place - Doombringer
