Wow that is crazy. Typically that happens when the envelop gets stuck in the sorting machine. We have had some instances where customers get a package that is beat up and says "contents missing". The USPS is a total joke and I can't stand using them. I'm really glad your cards somehow managed to not get messed up though. Do you have a picture of the envelop? I wouldn't mind seeing what it looked like.
Personally this is why myself and many others tend to only ship via USPS First Class Parcel mail in a bubble envelope with toploaders, etc. It may cost a little more, but its the best, most secure, and least expensive method I know of to ship a small amount of cards safely.

That is exactly how we ship and usps first class parcel by far has the most problems such as packages not arriving, no tracking, shredded, etc. We have to offer it though because people expect cheap shipping.

No, I threw it out yesterday before I posted. It was folded into quarters and on the side it was folded into was the rip half across one side of the envelope. Perhaps it was the fold that saved it all. But everything made it perfectly thanks to that smaller bubble mailer. Heath, if you could pass along my compliments to Gustavo, I'd appreciate it.

Interesting. I usually ship mine with the cards inside a soft sleeve, and then that eithor between two toploaders, or inside of one (if a single playset or less), then into a normal white envelope (which is then folded in 1/2 to assure the cards cant move around), then that placed into a standard 000 size bubble envelope, and then shipped via first class parcel mail with an ebay/paypal mailing label with DC and insurance included if the value is above a certain amount. Using this method Its very rare (1 in 500 packages shipped) that I run into an issue of loss/damage. I also dont ship internationally anymore, so thats something to consider as well.
Im always curious to hear how others ship their cards (I dont recall any issues with your guy's packaging before when Ive ordered.) So Im sure its fine. Its just interesting (and unfortunate) to hear that youve had such issues.

Yeah but 1 in 500 is a lot. If your shipping out a lot of packages that means you deal with a lost package at least a few times a week.

I guess I consider that an acceptable loss ratio, when considering that I add insurance to anything over $40, so none of the losses, when they do come, are ever very large. It would of course be nice if nothing came up missing/damaged/otherwise, but I dont expect THAT much of our postal system :p.

You should evaluate if adding insurance is actually worth it at 500/1. What are you paying on insurance on average?

Most of the items I mail are below the insurance threshold for me, so its not an obscene amount of items I add insurance to. I pay whatever the current online rate for insurance is, probably about $1.75 (ish) for $50 of insurance, or $2.50 (ish) for $100 of insurance. Of course I charge $1.75 for the first item and .25 for each additional item, so oftentimes the really large purchases get covered by the additional shipping (though Ill always make sure never to overcharge on those larger ones eithor), and the extra little bits of .25 here and there often cover, at least close to, the amounts I put out for insurance on those items that actually need it. I never make a dime on my shipping, and considering the newly enacted fee system on ebay (to which I pay fees on my shipping charges as well), and the paypal fees on the shipping, I probably lose a little bit overall with my shipping/packaging method, but I just tack that on as being a cost of doing business. I usually figure about 15-20% off the top for the various fees and additional shipping costs, and I still do okay with it.
To me, the additional money paid out for peace of mind (1 of those 1 in 500 was a $100 package that the post office was forced to pay up on, so yeah, that was well worth it), just in case something does happen. Part of the reason why I follow all of the DC and such rules fully is to make sure Im covered and to limit any potential losses I might end up with to a number I can easily manage and not worry significantly about. That is also why I no longer ship internationally, because eithor the shipping cost is crazy high to get the sort of security one needs when shipping internationally (and tracking which paypal requires), or Im taking huge risks by offering cheap international shipping with no tracking or insurance. After several losses and a switch to only fully-trackable shipping methods, and the steep decline in my international sales, I decided it wasnt worth the risk/worry and now only sell within the US with my online sales.
In the end, its all a matter of how much risk you or the business is willing to take. I try to go for near zero, and pay a little more for that. Many others try to save money, and are willing to deal with the higher risk ratio accordingly. Sorry for the long explanation, but I figured a thorough response to cover all the bases would be easier :p.
EDIT: BTW I dont want to hijack the thread and apologize for doing so in some small way, I just found the topic interesting and was curious.
A friend recently introduced me to MTGOnline, and the commander format, I used to play MTG back in high school, but I always had to do it with borrowed decks because paper magic can get expensive, and playing with the same deck over and over in 60 card format got boring.
Well, commander, and online magic is the perfect solution to that, being able to use any of my cards in any deck, and only needing one of each, I've bought like 200 dollars worth of cards over four or five orders, and have around 1500 cards, most uncommon/rare, with just a few really neat commons.
Anyway, I've bought almost all of my cards strictly from MTGOTraders, after stumbling across them on google, and I got each of my orders instantly, except one time I was sitting around for 30 minutes not realizing my MTGO client had crashed, and as soon as I logged in and apologized for not being online, they had the trade ready for me.
This guy or gal or these guys or gals are awesome, helpful (I was a newbie at trading and didn't know what to click the first time I ordered), and really professional.
I highly recommend large purchases from them, I have no idea how they stay so organized, I can barely organize my purchases to get unique cards as I get more and more.
Often with the coupon code, their prices are the same or better than the other popular bots/trading sites from the recommended bot thread. I've only run into like 10 cards out over 1300 that even after discount are a couple % cheaper from someone else.
Now it's time for me to get deckbuilding... so many combinations available!
I've ordered with these guys a few times in the past (and used their bots to death). What really gets me, is when I forget to use the paypal code and then pay with paypal, they actually tell me during the trade "Hey buddy, you forgot to put in the paypal code, so we're going to add that much extra in credit to our bots". They didn't think "Hey, made a few extra bucks", they actually went out of their way to add that to their bot credit for me. Out standing business practice. Also one of the reasons why they are usually the guys I go to to sell off cards and buy a few cards off their bots. If only their offer price on packs was a tad higher, but hey, I can't complain with how outstanding everything is.

I recently bought a Beta Control Magic and Visions Nekrataal for my cube, and was very satisfied with Cape Fear Games. Condition assessment was spot on for the Control Magic, which is always a concern when ordering over the internet.
Selling a bunch of cards right now; Cape Fear Games is one of the buylists I'm checking. Will update as the sale order(s) start to go through.
I've already heard from wilmheath personally.
Jeff and Heath, why don`t you just self insure? For example, if your lost/damaged package ratio is 1:500 and your average sale (mean) is $50 that would make it like 10 cents a package. Charge whatever you feel is right for insurance, either 10 cents per $50 or whatever the post office charges. When packages reach a certain value then use the postal insurance if you want. Added benifit is you don`t have to deal with the post office for lost/damaged packages, just send out replacement and/or offer a refund.
Not sure if this idea is good for you, but some industries with large fleets of vehicles self insure, can be a lot cheaper.

I'm not familiar with this concept. Are you basically saying that we charge an extra .10 per $50 on orders and then save that amount in an account that would be used to pay for lost packages?

Yes, that's what he's saying. It's a common business practice, especially when you have minimal losses on any single incident.
I'm not familiar with this concept. Are you basically saying that we charge an extra .10 per $50 on orders and then save that amount in an account that would be used to pay for lost packages?
Yeah, but obviously my numbers are fictional. You would have to track the % of packages lost/damaged and the mean of your orders. Maybe remove the highest/lowest 5% to get rid of outliers.
Insurance is to diversify risk by sharing the cost of the loss with other people who have also bought insurance. But, when you become very big the cost of insurance can actually be prohibitive as you have become so large you are basically paying to diversify your own risk.
If you are already charging for insurance this can be a way to lower the cost if your lost/damaged packages are a small percent of orders.
If your not charging for insurance, you can offer it at a low cost, but you would probably want to make it manditory. Not very good if your only insuring a low percentage of your orders and they turn out to be problem customers.
I had only skimmed the end of the thread and thought Jeff was insuring all his orders, looks like only those over $40. Not sure if this is right, but I took it from Jeff`s post that he is not charging his customers for the insurance. In this case it may be worthwhile, since he is paying out the post office rate for insurance. He can limit his liability by adding *edit (real post office insurance)* insurance to any package over say $200, or whatever number he desires. Not sure what you do. Anyways I will make a quick scenario below.
Using some of the numbers Jeff provided for % of packages lost and cost of insurance you can see how much of a rip off it is. About 1 out of 500 packages are lost/damaged. The Post Office charges $1.75 for each $50 or less of insurance. If 500 $50 packages were insured it would cost $875, thats a lot more than the value of the 1, maybe 2 $50 packages that are lost. It`s not much better at the $100 mark either, $1250 for 1 or 2 $100 packages.
Of course, if you think something is going to be risky, or falls to far out of your range you might just use the real post office insurance.
Even if you don`t use it, hopefully you learned something, which is always good.
General question: I get having restrictions on singles at 8x each, but if I want ~25x of a particular basic land (nothing really high in demand, mainly looking at specific M11 or M12 lands), is there a way for me to communicate that to you on my order form? Or do you simply not allow this?
The basic lands should not have restriction if you are buying directly on our site. If you let me know which land it is you're looking at I will fix it. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I have extensive experience with their MODO wing - MTGOTraders. This was the only retailer I ever used. Cards were generally in stock, were cheap enough, and were always delivered to my account ultra fast. I once placed an order 8 minutes before a modern event, and even though the worker said he was swamped he delivered the cards to me in time for me to use them in the event. With the coupon their cards were usually cheaper than any of the other bots I used on occasion.
I am currently taking a break from playing online, so I sold my entire collection to them. They gave me a quote within the day, and it was more than I was expecting to get for the collection. There were a lot of payment options including store credit with Cape Fear +20%. This was a tempting offer but I went with a business check.
I couldn't recommend these guys more.
If I ever go back to MTGO when life circumstances permit, I will come back to MTGOTraders.
If I ever get back into playing any paper beyond modern peasant / pauper, I will check Cape Fear out.
Highly recommended.

I ship internationally, but I use priority mail flat rate envelope. As far as I know, this is the cheapest way to ship internationally while insuring the package. If they have a problem with the high cost, well that's too bad.
I am always torn between simply sending everything in the 000 bubble mailer in toploader, or in a plain white envelope with the 65 cent stamp for non machinable. For the common and uncommon playsets and the dollar rares, people are reluctant to pay for the higher shipping when there is always someone offering $1 dollar shipping for plain white envelope, or worse free shipping. why anyone would want to sell something for a loss, which is what the cheap cards at free shipping amounts to is beyond me.
ive tried using bubble mailer method for everything with the shipping set at 2.00 for FC with DC and the sales of the more bulk stuff tends to drop off precipitiously. i'll probably go back to that tho just for the ease of having a single unified shipping method for cards. printing the thing out is faster than writing the addresses, writing non machinable, and afixing the stamp to the envelope anyhow.
Sold my mtgo collection for in store credit at cape fear games. Everything went well and I feel I got a fair price. Same day I placed an order (about 23 cards=about $800) recieved my cards fast. Only negatives I'd say is packaging could have been better. Cards came with a plastic protector on only one side (many other places put one on both sides for cards worth much less). Condition of cards were better than I had expected (except one). Hope this next order I just placed is much of the same. Thanks guys!

That is odd as we typically do ship with protectors on both sides. I'll ask the guys in shipping and try to figure out what happened. I appreciate the feedback. Paying extra 20% on paper cards for MTGOTraders credits.
That is odd as we typically do ship with protectors on both sides. I'll ask the guys in shipping and try to figure out what happened. I appreciate the feedback. Also if you feel the condition was not as described of a card shoot me a pm and let me know which card it was and I'll give you some store credit.
