Ben your prices are fair {I mean that with my whole heart}, their prices are inflated soley because they CAN and reflect it with most of their stock.
Well I do wish this member a positive result on his journey to the White Horse.
And to the Moderator...I can't feel bad about stating my opinion seeing I would rather burn my money in a brown bag first {again my opinion} then to pay the prices that they demand seeing I can hit Ebay and pay the fraction as I stated. My friend just paid 6 bucks for a few uncommons and paid the express shipping to have then at his house 6 days {I "S.M." can ship anywhere in the U.S. under 3} before the Minn legacy event that was held 2 weeks ago. Yeah he paid their prices and the shipping, but sadly those cards didn't show until 3 days {9 days later} after the event...the results were that he lost to a Moat with his Tier Goblin deck, and to think if those Anarchy would have arrived.
No pun intended,
S.M.
Its funny that this would find its way onto the forums here, as I really was going to just let it die. I am the one who "S.M." speaks of, that did have a day decided by a company who I thought was top notch.
I read the reviews, searched the web, compared prices, ect. After some research I thought I found a reputable company that could back its claims.
What I ended up getting was shafted, over about $6 worth of uncommons. Long story short, I needed some uncommons for a sunday tournament. I placed an order on Tuesday morning, by internet, while on the phone with the CSR. I received email confirmation of placement and shipment Tuesday afternoon. A week later, the tournament came and went, and still no cards. After 2 attempts to find the cards, I was told on my 3rd call, they were in transit, scheduled for the next day to be delivered, and if I no longer wanted/needed them, I could send the package back at my expense, and they would refund my purchase cost - my shipping, and this was only if the original mailing package was unopened.
I payed for 2-3 day priority mail, that took longer then most people on here take to package and send cards thru normal snail mail. All from a reputable company with major backing.
I don't wish to discourage or tarnish anything based off one bad experience, but from the posting in the original quote, I would seriously consider where you purchase things and for how much. Just because it's SCG and not "Xman @ ebay with 9000+ feedback", don't mean things are gonna be in your favor. Take your time, shop around. I know there are a few people on here, S.M., Gunslinga, ect that can obtain these said cards for you at a respectable price, and in my opinion its no more a risk with them as it is with the big name companies.

Hey Mike:
Thanks for taking the time to post here! I understand the frustration that comes from a package not arriving by the time you need it, and so I did a little investigating into your particular case.
According to your order details, you had placed your order on Wednesday, 8/11, and your order shipped via USPS Priority Mail on the same day. The USPS website advertises 2-3 day shipping for Priority Mail (http://www.usps.com/shipping/prioritymail.htm). From their website:
Priority Mail
A simpler way to ship.
Take the guesswork out of shipping with Priority Mail® Flat Rates. Whatever fits in the box or envelope ships for one low rate—anywhere in the United States. There's virtually no weighing or calculating. And your packages reach their destination in 2-3 days.
According to the United States Postal Service, your package should have arrived between Friday, 8/13 and Saturday, 8/14. Unfortunately, it appears that the Postal Service did not get you the package within that time frame. I completely sympathize with you not having your cards in time for the tournament; if I could have hand-delivered the package to you myself to make sure it was on time, I would have done so.
Unfortunately, we are at the mercy of the postal service. Once the package leaves our shipping facility, we have no control over the shipment. When the United States Postal service says that a shipping method will take 2-3 days, and it actually takes 4+ days for the cards to arrive, they are letting everyone down - you, because you don't have your cards in time for the tournament, and us, because we want to make our customers happy.
In short, I'd like to say the following:
1) I'm very sorry that you didn't get your cards in time. I want to stress that we did everything on our end to have this shipment out in time (order placed and shipped on the same day), and we were let down by the Postal Service. It doesn't matter if it was us, or any other person who shipped these cards (S.M., Gunslinga, etc) - if the mail service screws up, the mail service screws up.
2) I would wholeheartedly recommend using UPS (in our case) or Fedex if you absolutely need to have cards by a set date. Both UPS and Fedex are privately owned companies (as opposed to the USPS, which is a branch of the government), and are MUCH more accurate in their shipping times. I went to the UPS website for shipping times, and found that UPS Ground is a 3-day ship (Monday through Friday only!) from Roanoke to your location. If you were looking to get cards for a weekend tournament, you would need to place your order by noon on Tuesday (using UPS ground) to have your card arrive on time - but I would virtually guarantee them being at your door on Friday with UPS as the carrier.
Again, I want to apologize that you did not receive your cards in time for your tournament. I wish that the postal service did not let both you and us down in this case, but they did. I hope that you realize that we did everything we could to have this package arrive on time, and if you have any other thoughts about this incident, you can e-mail me personally at ben@starcitygames.com and I would be happy to discuss them!

SCG is pretty much my go to place for cards if I'm shopping online. I've NEVER had a problem with them, and I too have received near mint looking foils after ordering slightly played. While the prices on some things might seem slightly high, I think it's worth it when I look at the fast shipping and selection. If I need it, SCG probably has it.
You know, I've got to admit I've let the bad experiences of others cloud my judgment about what to think of Starcity Games, and I've said some things that I shouldn't of without having personal experience with them. But after reading this thread and seeing the responses from one of the Presidents himself, I gotta believe these guys truly do care at even the most individual level about their consumer base. So I tell you what, I'm going to place an order around Thursday or Friday when I get my paycheck, and I'm going to gauge your service based on my own personal experience. I hope to have as friendly and rewarding a service as most people stateside have said in this thread, and I apologize for jumping to conclusions before I had a chance to buy from SCG myself.
post the buylist please. I need some new-extended staples and have some older stuff to trade, that no one locally is interested in.
Hey:
E-mail me directly at ben@starcitygames.com with a list of what you've got, and I can ship you back some prices. Buylist revamp is more extensive than we originally planned, and so it might be a while on the full buylist
Ben, May I ask, but why do you not accept paypal from international customers?
Hey Yomako:
At this time, Paypal does not offer protection to sellers when selling items to international customers. I imagine that one day that will, and at that time we will gladly accept Paypal payments from international customers!
I sold them cards in person at GP: Kansas City a couple of years back. Ben was a very nice person to deal with, even if I never buy from them or read their premium articles.

Are you not protected if you use registered mail? I realize there won't be many international customers willing to spend an additional $11.50 for registered, but is it not an option? It seems to be an option for items I sell on eBay to international buyers.

Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):

I can speak from personal experience as a seller on ebay to state that USPS registered mail is a joke. Due to the fact that it doesnt 100% track the package like say USPS Express mail does, Paypal, even with registered mail information just checks to see that there is no information for the package (which was the case most of the time) and then without conformation of delivery, they refund the buyer's payment and Im left with having to wait 60 days for the whole process to be able to get back the $40 they insure such packages for.
Now then, express mail on the other hand ($30 shipping cost, with $100 of included insurance and typically guaranteed delivery times within about a week in most cases) does have the appropriate tracking that paypal wants and has a much easier insurance investigation process than exists for the others. Problem is, most people dont want to pay that much to have some cards shipped overseas. I eventually just gave up and stopped shipping internationally alltogether because it wasnt worth the stress or added potential for loss (or customer irritation due to shipping cost) to do it.
So needless to say I understand completely where he wouldnt want to use paypal for such instances because they really dont (in combination with usps) do a good job protecting the seller when it comes to international sales.
I recently ordered a NM/M Abyssal Persecutor from SCG. The card arrived with a noticeable ding on it. I emailed them about it, and asked what procedures would have to be taken to mail the card back and get a replacement.
In reply, I was informed that a new persecutor had been shipped to me, and that I could keep the first card.
That's service! SCG has my loyalty.

I've bought from SCG numerous times and I have never had a problem. Every order was right 100%, and they always shipped next day. I hear a lot of complaints about prices, and while their chase rares/mythics tend to be higher than other places, they actually have pretty good prices for cheap stuff.
I really wish they'd get my order wrong though just so I can get some free stuff.
I had a very positive experience with them at the Nashville Open (which, btw, was a very fun event.) I'd never ordered from them before, because their prices are often on the high end, but I ordered a few legacy staples I absolutely had to have for my deck that weekend, and chose to pick them up at the site. They had my order ready, no problems, just handed them my driver's license and they checked my name and grabbed my order which had already been gathered together.
If you're going to a SCG open, I recommend doing this. They had most of the staple cards you would need for either legacy or standard in their case, in ample supply, but they may or may not have various uncommons and sideboard cards there, so the pickup order was definitely the way to go. And while I still think their prices are high in general on many items, the beta basic lands I bought from them were as cheap as T&T's and in better shape, better in fact than I've seen any beta basic land in years. The Wastelands I bought from them later that day were quite nice looking as well, the fantastic condition pretty much justified the price.
Used to start off with a bad opinion on SCG, due to their pricing and tendency to 'exploit their huge influence on suscribers/buyers', but after shopping with them twice, I think first buy was $80, second one was close to $160+, all I can say is that they have the best service out there.
You order day 1, they ship out day 2 with email/tracking everything. SP cards are actually quite decent in condition. They have a huge inventory, lots of foils, almost always in stock.
My second buy is coming in soon, and when that falls through smoothly, all I can say is 5/5 for SCG in terms of speed/communication/customer service/trust/efficiency. Pricing wise, probably still on the steep side of things but I've seen cards that are actually competitively priced when compared against Ebay and other retail stores.

I like designing decks and I am primarily a control player. Using Drain to fight Workshops is like using Exclude to fight Dark Confidant.
I'm going to have to agree with everything everyone has said: They do indeed spike the prices up in most staples, but at the same time, they keep great work ethic.
Seriously, I have ordered from these people three times, all of which have been buying Casual/EDH stuff. When you receive your package from the mail (and mind you, these people are quick), they always leave out a little "Thanks ____!" in their own hand-writing, which I find appealing because not alot of retailers have the time do that.
I would NEVER recommend buying the more high-priced stuff from them, but for everything else, and for a safe, secure, and enjoyable shopping experience, SCG is the place to go.
(On a side note: They are the only online retailers I have found so far that carry exclusive life counter spindowns from both "From The Vault: Relics and Exiled". These two gems would make great Christmas/Birthday presents!)
Personally rarely if ever buy or browse SCG for singles simply because they tend to be on the higher end more often than not, however just would like to comment on them from what I saw at the SCG open in Boston when i attended yesterday.
Of all the vendors and organizers i've seen, SCG seems to be some of the most professional. I was actually a bit in awe how they did business. Multiple staff for sales, a couple to check orders, and even a few people on site who could swiftly sort out every card they were buying in promptly and efficiently. While prices are high, no one can deny SCG really deserves the title of being one if not the best in the business for this game. I wish them luck with future events as a magic dealer.
on a note about pricing though, i'm very satisfied with their product prices over singles. $90 per box on site was a good offer. I wish i had thought to find a couple friends and split a box for doing a 4 person sealed flight together after most of us dropped from the main event.
I placed my fifth order on SCG's website, and they called me since my address was different (I'm having this order shipped to college instead of home). I was grumpy because I thought that my order would be shipped a day late because of this, but to my surprise it got shipped before the end of the day!
I wish they had better shipping options for singles. It's just not worth doing any order if it's just a couple cards. Whereas some of their competitors have $1.00 shipping for 100 singles or less.
My favorite part when ordering from SCG is seeing the invoice with the handwritten note "Thanks, David!" every. single. time. In fact, I usually write a similar note to them whenever I place an order: "Thanks, StarCityGames!"
Also, they are one of the most reliable stores I've ever ordered from (second only to Newegg). Since I live in MD, I can count on my cards arriving within 3 days 100% of the time.

We are currently exploring a variety of shipping alternatives for smaller singles orders domestically, so there might be some progress on this front in the not-too-distant future.

I just got off the phone with them because I screwed up an order and instead of the ol' Once you hit "Order Complete" button you are screwed line, they said, "What do you want to change?"

This would be awesome. I would definitely be ordering more often if shipping were cheaper.
So, was looking around to grab a couple of coldsnap boxes after my stock ran out unexpectedly at the store I sell singles (and extended/older packs) at. And after looking around for a while, and not finding anything particularly decent price wise, I decided to take a look at online stores that I knew carried boxes and such, and sure enough Star City had some, and they were actually the cheapest of everyone else O.O. I think this may have only been my second order from them ever, but I logged in, made the purchase, paid via paypal and all was good. I got tracking notification and everything for my purchase, and even received a call (which never happens) from UPS letting me know when my package was expected to be delivered and that someone should be there to sign for it. Got the boxes within a week, and everything was 100% perfect. I couldnt be happier.
While Star City may not always be the cheapest on some things, their customer service and availability and fast shipping are terrific, and I dont have a bad thing to say about them from this transaction. Thanks guys! :).

I tend to buy small amounts of singles at a time though, usually just to finish a deck. SCG is almost never my cheapest option (and I'm a college student you know!) simply because the shipping cost is too high a % of the total cost to be worth it for me.

SCG is almost never my cheapest option (and I'm a college student you know!) simply because the shipping cost is too high a % of the total cost to be worth it for me.
