Ok so maybe not double the retail price but without expeditions everybody would be dumping this set hard and speculating on Origins instead.
I'm actually doing a little speculating on Archangel of Tithes myself. It was in the top standard deck at the PT yet is getting none of the hype because it wasn't a top 8 deck (don't forget those draft results). I'm not sure if it's being missed or people just don't think it's that good.
i'm not sure if the angel can make it. the attack clause is kinda like a worse iroas, the blocking is the only thing that makes it more interesting but even with 5 toughness its kinda a huge meh target. i see it as a possible sideboard card against RDW
anyway people are forced to open origins now because of the PW.
In summation.....Star Trek wins a prolonged naval battle against superior, yet less technologically advanced, numbers, with Picard leading the assault, while Kirk takes your soul by laying out Solo and probably his manservant Chewy as well, before impregnating and ditching your Princess.
Jeff,
You mention 2 foil basics from a box of BfZ. I opened a case and got 5 total; no single box had 2. Just curious if your mileage varied.
I got 44 in 21 so the 2 per box was very accurate.
2 foil basics was the average I had seen for boxes for what seems like ages (though admittedly I haven't opened any boxes of the new set yet myself. Plus others (like anssi here) had mentioned getting 2 on average. I decided to give BFZ a shot thanks to a special deal on ebay, so I'll find out soon enough once I open the 44 boxes I have incoming. Oh, and for the record, I did a re-check on the set looking solely at ebay values for everything, and the average box value for BFZ with the 1 in 3 box expeditions is now $120, or $95 without factoring in expeditions.

Jeff, do you sell the cards through eBay/TCG or do you have a non-middleman process? I seem to think you used to run the card section of a store, but that you no longer are associated with a physical store. Basically wondering how much selling cost you associate with the $120 box value.

I sell exclusively on ebay these days since I left the shop 3 years ago. With the top rated plus powerseller discount my ebay fees end up around 7% of combined price+shipping for items sold, and then another 3%+.30 per payment received from paypal. Additional costs are $50 a month for the ebay store I have, and then of course additional costs for toploaders, soft sleeves, envelopes, bubble mailers, and label paper. With all of that said breaking it down accordingly, I would put the costs to sell at around $20 out of that $120, so approx. 15% for me, probably 20%-25% for the average person selling on there. (I was also paying 15% to the shop on my sales (off the top) before I left, so that 15% number has been about my steady cost basis for a while.
The bant tokens deck is playing it and I think going wide with all the Crackling Doom going around is probably a good idea.
Also seeing play in some Esper lists.
This card is also seeing play in a variety of T2 Modern decks. It is extremely flexible in control builds, and flashback-able with the same on-board power as the initial cost (+2 from Snapcaster).

I've tested it in BW Tokens and don't think it is great in the deck, but maybe other modern lists might find need for it...

One of these day I have to get myself organizized.
I believe Painful Truths has solid potential for exponential growth. Besides it's solid 3 for 3 for 3 stats, the card had Patrick Chapin sold for Legacy and he said it "over-performed" in his mentor deck. As cheap as it is it wouldn't be a bad spec, even for the foils. Just think about it: if it's common to lose 3 life for your mana on turn 1 in Modern, how much of a draw back is it to bolt/shock yourself to draw 3/2 cards, especially against infect?
It's a conditionally better option in Junk with Siege Rhino. And Esper control decks would definitely find some use out of it. Don't get me wrong it's probably a sideboard card at best (you obviously don't want it against burn) but at .78 cents how can you lose?
Painful truth won't kill you. Dark confidant has that capacity and in decks with a higher curve you're paying a lot of life over several turns whereas painful truth doesn't care about your average CMC. It's also virtually guaranteed card advantage whereas bob dies to removal and can net you no advantage. People praise bob like he's the greatest ever and while that is true of the person behind the card the card itself isn't the end all be all of card advantage engines.

Kytheon, hero of akros, he's on the human aggro plan, last time we were in innistrad human aggro was a big thing, he is still dropping now but could he rebound with innistrad?
Value is good. But Dredgevine isn't supposed to be about value. It's supposed to be about V-8; 2000 pounds of nitro boosted war vegetables. The more velocity, the better.
