Well here's the thing. The number of control decks in Modern is going to be WAY less than in Vintage and Legacy. Way less. So the need for Aether Vial isn't there. Getting to play your creatures at instant speed is nice, I guess, but Vial does nothing the turn it comes into play. I'd much rather play a Goblin Guide, Wild Nacatl, or Noble Hierarch than Aether Vial.

WoTC, thank you for finally announcing the Modern format, an eternal format where everyone can participate.

Yeah, my gut-reaction was to buy as many Vials as I could for a reasonable price when I saw the ban list, but I decided to sleep on it. I'm glad I passed, because (good) fast aggro decks won't need it. Various tribal decks will use it as in Legacy, but I just don't see them being as competitive (Merfolk, Knights, etc). It will probably still rise a few bucks, but nothing worth stocking up on.
MAH GAWD at dem shocks. Even the bad (unpopular) ones are pushing 20.
So they nerfed almost every existing deck archetype except Zoo and Junk-type stuff. It will be interesting to see what new decks (other than those) rise up to take their place. Seems like it'll be more important than usual to follow up on the results of this first tourney...
Aether Vial will surely be abused in the formal. It may fit better in Merfolk than Zoo, since Merfolk has more 2 and 3 CC creatures.
In Legacy, Aether Vial gives you protection from Counterspells. In Vintage, it gives you protection from Sphere effects. Neither of those attributes are as important in Modern. Most counterspells are conditional and Sphere effects are non-existant. I think the hype around Vial is overblown. Could be wrong, but I'm not seeing it.

I don't think it's safe to assume that because "Faeries is banned" (lol is that even a thing? you lose a broken turn 2 and your best card draw spell and still have the entire deck) that Clique is somehow less awesome. Clique sees play is basically every deck that plays blue. Just because blue got a pretty big nerf doesn't suddenly make what cards are left over less good.
Edit:
Since my shipments have processed for my orders, I can safely recommend you stock up on Ghost Quarter. Ghost Quarter is basically Path to Exile for land at worst and straight up Wasteland/Strip Mine at best. Mutavault, Punishing Fire, Bl/Inkmoth Nexus, manlands, and infinite color manabases are all likely to play a part in Modern. They were only printed in the last small expansion of a block, which undermines their number in circulation, and they are one of the few way to keep mana bases fair and are certainly the least expensive way to do that.
They rose from about $0.40 to a minimum of $0.80 over this week. Their average price is only $1.5 right now, so the cost of entry is low at the moment, but I feel like it's one of the untapped and undervalued cards of Modern. I've been talking it up a great deal in the Modern subforum, but I've never discussed it from a financial point of view. I would buy them while they're still at or under a dollar on most stores.
I can safely recommend you stock up on Ghost Quarter.
I think your reasoning here is pretty sound so I just picked up 4x more just in case. I seriously doubt they'll print any better option than this anytime soon.

1. As answers to manlands and punishing fire which optimally require at least four lands to operate, isn't tech edge better.
2. Many decks will take advantage of fetch/shock combo resulting in alot of three color decks. Don't know if there's room for colorless lands for those decks.
I don't know if either lands will be THAT useful. Tec Edge is too slow against aggro to be good. Ghost Quarter only hurt the colors, but it won't be THAT bad either since they will go fetch the basic they need. Ghost Quarter is more for manland, or special land like Grove of the Burnwillow.
$20 seems to be about the most people are willing to pay for them at the moment if ebay is any indication, even active auctions, the ones that are looking to end soon, have yet to breach $20. It will be interesting to see where these end up, but I have a feeling $20.... maybe $25 could be where we see these things end up at, especially once people realize they have skyrocketed in value and begin to sell them for profit.
Uh, you guys do realize Vial does more than avoid counterspells? Drop it Turn 1 and you have a manaless Quicksilver Amulet that's even more flexibile and is still instant speed. Vial does avoid counters, but I think its true value is the cheat factor.
EDIT: Holy **** Vendilion Clique. Time to grab Judge foils.
clique was the 2nd card i looked up after the lands boy was i shocked at 35
hell it went up so fast the judge promo isnt more than 5$ more than it
One store has it in stock and jacked the price to $35. It has been tracking around $15-$18 for days so don't be too shocked or deceived by that $35 price tag.... Although, I wouldn't be too surprised if it does settle around that if Modern doesn't take a huge dump on itself.

Oh yeah, it's not $35. But it did double in the last few days, and I didn't realize that (though I heard hype about it).
I guess I'll start this thread now.
So.... Ravnica duals seem to be on the rise now.

Does anyone just play around Edge's condition? Or does that just not happen in actual practice.

You mean stick themselves at three land? I don't think there's enough artifact mana in this format for that. Could be wrong tho.
