The print run of Coldsnap is laughably small compared to any modern set. It was even tiny by it's current times, because the set was regarded as not-very-good and it's slot in the release schedule means it wasn't even the newest set for long.
There are probably less Coldsnap rares than rares of any other new boarder (sold by the pack) sets by a pretty big margin. Small supply doesn't take much demand to outstrip.

Sudden Shock has been moving up in the world. It is now a $2.00 card. It has taken nearly 10 years to go from a quarter card to a $2.00 card.
I guess arc mages ARE known for their patience sometimes.
They can be patient sometimes, but it isn't what makes them arc mages, so it's not a defining character trait. The "Zap everything with lightning" one is a bit more widespread.
I'm actually a little surprised Sudden Shock has been laying low for so long. I expected it to happen within a month or two after Twin got banned and everyone expecting Infect and other all-in-on-one-dude decks to go nuts. Maybe we're seeing something now as Grixis decks stepping it up to combat Infect and Kiln Fiend.
The pre-release promo foils are around $9.00 a pop on TCG right now. Limited supply, I guess – and they do look pretty damn awesome.

I didn't like the pre-release sudden shock foils. They were too dark or something. Maybe I just ordered a bad batch. I've been using non foils.
I've sold a few things on ebay, its not too bad. When stuff spikes stupidly high I just sell it off anymore. Its a little extra money for entry fees or going out.

There aren't a ton left, but they're only $5 on eBay right now. That's not really out of line for a random promo of that age. I was expecting them to be $15 or something.

I saw just the 1 set of 4 for $25 and then $8 per after that, although maybe that was just the search criteria I was using. I actually happened to check them a few days ago and believe they were sitting around $10 for a playset.

That's so strange to me. People in Modern never give up on a deck it seems.
Because GGT, while nice, isn't what made the deck great.

With the spike on Thug, how has the price on sealed copies of DD: Izzet vs. Golgari not budged? They're readily available online in the $15-20 range, and there's a $8 Golgari Thug, a $13 Life from the Loam, a $3.50 Isochron Scepter, and $5 Eternal Witness in there. Not to mention some $1 cards like Brainstorm.

Saffi recently saw play as a 1 of in abzan combo decks. Combos with the new renegade rallier and a sac outlet and is just good value overall in those style of decks.
Plus, the card is from an era where the playerbase wasn't as big so naturally it spikes harder.
Hey, what's up w/ Saffi Eriksdotter? Foils are sitting around $68 (dropped down 61% from $175) & non-foils are around $11.00.
An Abzan Company did decently well at a small tournament using her and Renegade Rallier last weekend. Loop her and rallied with a Blood Artist and sac outlet in play for infinite triggers.

Figures, after I just finished selling all of mine. Ah well, I'm happy with what I got out of them, and its still a hedge against possible reprinting, so I suppose we will see how that ends up. It was my first higher end modern card to sell out though, so there was definitely a ton of demand before the spike. I suspect that inevitably real demand just flat out eclipsed the available supply and off and up it went. Will be interesting to see what happens with the card if it does or doesn't get reprinted respectively. If it doesn't, I rather cringe to think, if it does, the price should definitely come back down to at least what it was and possibly a bit lower beyond that (Especially if its just printed as a regular rare). In the meantime though, they are now one of the most expensive cards in modern (Behind primarily goyf and Liliana).
The chalice spike just doesn't seem sustainable. It's the answer to the new cheerios deck sure, but that deck is incredibly flimsy to begin with and I really doubt it can consistently place in events to justify adding chalice permanently to the SB. Not only that, it has a very real chance of seeing a reprint in modern masters this year.
I agree it wont last at this price point. But it is a card that has been on the tip of exploding for a long time. If we don't see a reprint in MM3 it could stay around $55 forever and then spike whenever it makes a splash at a national.
Often wondered why particular cards from the winning decks jump. Why not Stormbreath Dragon or the ever-dropping Chandra, Torch of Defiance?

Atraxa EDH decks maybe? I haven't seen anything in Modern making heavy use of Doubling Season lately.

I'd tend to blame Atraxa more than Double Moon. The timing on the spike says "I'm using this with a card that just came out".
