I think LolTroll is one of those cards that may become more useful later on, maybe a block down the road or so. He's right now just a fun casual card - I use him in a deck I call the Chancellory - a multiplayer focused Reanimator deck with these, about 12 of the Phyrexian Chancellors, and more discard outlets like Zombie Infestation and plenty of cheap reanimation. But so far it hasn't quite gotten the oomph it needs, but if you can find them cheap, they may be worth the effort.

I am not sold on the troll myself and will not be investing in it. It is a strong card potentially but the only way this guy takes off is with guys that can come back from the graveyard. Otherwise discarding your creature cards to pump him is just not worth it. Once you get into older formats... why choose this over tarmogoyf? I could see it being better in a specific deck or two but hardly a staple. This might be one I am wrong about down the road but that is my two cents on it currently. I think there are plenty of good speculation targets in this set so why go for a longer shot?
all the RtR will need a few months to recover. hold... do not sell!!! trust me it is a cycle for every set. price dips lowest before the release of the next one.... then it slowly goes back up in price.
kirin i see you made quite a stock of trolls. Do you really think they'll rise again? I'm quite sceptical about it
My rationale on trolls... which could be wrong...
it is a two drop (this is important because it fits a needed curve in every deck unlike angel of serenity or hoof which are good in some decks but have no place in others because of curve.
It has 3 abilities. When is the last time you had a two drop with 3 abilities?
It reminds me a lot of elesh norm... follow me on this I know it is a stretch... norm was a card people thought would be good. however, it saw no play and sat around at 5-6 dollars, essentially a bulk mythical...
until the printing of unburial rites... but the deck itself did not become good until near the end of norm's standard life (where it hit 25 dollars).
RtR is the first set... Troll will be around for 5 more. I like those odds, that the meta will shift in its favor some time.
for modern and legacy, there is no value, but I believe that troll will hit 10 dollars some time before it rotates out.

Creatures like Vengevine, Bloodghast, and Gravecrawler do exist in competitive decks and the Dredge mechanic is real. Tarmogoyf is a good creature, but a regenerating creature for a single B is a little intimidating to attack through or block, especially when Troll has trample. It is a solid card, but it is a little too build around me for now and just need a new strategy that will add him to it for Troll to explode. I think a playset or 2 isn't necessarily a bad thing in the next few years(read 1-3). Zombies is also a popular tribe, so casual constructed deck will want him in play sets.
52 Shamans
28 Sphinx's Revelation
112 Supreme Verdicts
230 Ash Zealots
50 Niv-Mizzet (screwed up on this one)
First of all you guys invest way more than I do :- ) I have like 15 shamans and then just 2x playsets of all the other good stuff I've been eyeing. Don't have the extra income to go in any more (although I'll keep trying to trade into more if I can).
I too would be worried about the revelations. If the format speeds up (which I think is likely) I fear it will lose some serious steam. I traded all mine (but one to hold for my COMM use) preparing for this.
I also went in on Niv-Mizzet a bit (about 10 copies) but that has not panned out mainly because Izzet ending up being a sub-par guild in RTR. I'm hoping DGM (with the UR planeswalker maybe?) will allow this to shine. If not, then I'll hold it for the long haul and hope COMM brings it up eventually (although the older one might be the better version in COMM for it's infinite combos).

For the troll this makes some sense. I will definitely be keeping an eye on the troll each spoiler season for cards that might enable it. I just don't see anything in GTC at the moment so I'm willing to wait and see if it slides more. I agree though on the legacy/modern angle which is why I've been avoiding it. There just seem like better bets right now. For example why buy into them when supreme verdict and ash zealot are almost the same price? Still I do see your and KV's points. I'll keep an eye on it but still don't think it's the best speculation target out of RTR. I would agree securing a playset now for future use/protection from price spike is a good plan though as it is quite cheap for its power level.
Is there any chance of DRS coming back down? I missed my window when I was okay at buying him for 10 a piece. I'm thinking his current price drive is heavily fuelled by modern Jund's success and post-PTQ he may see a drop back down. He's a good card and sees play in all formats, so I can't see him going under 10 again but currently he's basically the only RTR card to go up significantly in this pre-GTC sell off/redeem period.

Possibly if he is banned in Modern, but so far he is a staple in Legacy and Modern for the colors that can run him. Jund has crossed into Legacy as well.
So it would be wise to hold off on unloading RtR if I want to maximize my value? I've been hoping to turn it into some legacy staples I need and every little bit helps. What do you guys think will be the best time to start trying to off them?
honestly there is never a bad time to turn standard into legacy. Legacy is the gold standard of investments... using that term super loosely.
I actually obtained all my speculations by trading. sometimes you can choose what you what to speculate on... sometimes its what is available to you. the trolls were available to me... so i went all out.
as for Niz Mizz.... I don't know anyone who would use the new one over the older one. The older one combos with curiosity and other cards... while the newer one is harder to work with. I would be shocked if new Niz Mizz ever replaced the older one (which is now cheap due to dual decks).

I agree that Lotloth Troll is undervalued for its uniqueness and ability. It fits a similar role to Bloodghast when it was legal in standard. However the problem with the card is that it might not find a home in standard unlike bloodghast with vampires after Innistrad block rotation as it only fits in a G/B aggro shell.
Nah, still too early. I bought ~60 Consecrated Sphinx that took awhile and paid huge returns from ~$2 to $15. Not saying Niv-Mizzet will reach $15 but I think it has a ton of potential @ it's current price. The card is bonkers and just depends on what meta shakes-out plus it'll still be here post rotation.
It's an instant speed 5/5 trampler for 4. Wtf do you people want seriously? It has applications in populate/ above the curve beats decks, or in Bant control/ flash. I seriously think anyone mad at this card for any reason other than losing an attacker to instant speed wurm, should go home and make their own awesome card game and leave the rest of us alone.
So it would be wise to hold off on unloading RtR if I want to maximize my value? I've been hoping to turn it into some legacy staples I need and every little bit helps. What do you guys think will be the best time to start trying to off them?
Now would be the absolute worst time to unload RTR, as this is the time in the cycle when prices will be at their absolute lowest. Over time, staples will find their way to the kitchen table, EDH decks, and the attic, and prices will slowly rise over the next few months. Standard cards tend to be at their highest price right at launch, and then they pop one-two weeks after rotation (i.e. the rotation that causes the previous block to leave the format). I'd suggest either waiting until launch for DGM, or waiting until a week or two after the next block comes out.

The card's most recent move is on right. means no movement. is a card that wasn't on the list last update. This is the update's hottest mover. (#) is price in CND incl. shipping here.
Rakdos Lord of Riots fell below the $3 cutoff point since the last update, leaving a whopping 22 cards still worth opening in a booster pack!
Well well well, a new #1! Technically, there are 3 #1 cards right now, all tied at $15.50! Deathrite almost doubled in the past month to land there, while Jace simply cooled a bit, and Revelation just held tight. What's in store? Hard to imagine a rare staying on top forever, but you never know. The metagame ("demand" side of things) is in control at the moment, it seems. Deathrite certainly goes perfectly into almost EVERY GateCrash guild mechanic, especially Dimir, and is getting a huge boost (as though it needed one) from that. Angel of Serenity lost some value but held on to 4th, as Temple Garden moves to the top of the dual lands just underneath. They're holding tight around the ten dollar mark still. Vraska seems to be popular but continues to fall in price, below $8 shipped now. Abrupt Decay seems to have bottomed and is now on the way up a little, looking stable at $6. Rakdos's Return, Armada Wurm, and Trostani look boring and weak right now, while Ash Zealot predictably rides the coattails of Boros up to $4 and 15th spot. Supreme Verdict looks to have bottomed at $4 but hasn't moved up from there yet, and I know a lot of people who have dozens of playsets waiting in case it does. Lantern, Smiter, Lotleth, Dreadbore, and Detention Sphere are all floundering at $3 and in danger of falling off the tally if they don't do something soon.
In terms of overall box value, RTR looks like it won't go any further down, and shows signs of moving upward. It's currently tied for 1st place amongst Standard sets with M13, INN, and AR. DA is still the runt of the family, though it's interesting to see it moving up over time to a nearly-acceptable level! I'll take that as a sign that the Standard secondary market is fairly healthy (overall the secondary market has been decimated by reprints in recent years, but Standard is the sacred cow and remains strong).
As always, I'll continue to monitor and update this thread as the next set releases. Speaking of that, I'll have my GC presales up within a couple days, and my GC tally thread up right after that.

K, but half of that is my own opinion/analysis, and the other half is publicly available information anyway, so I don't see why it would be a help to you in your writing.
The card quality in RTR is insane. The 22nd most valuable card in the set, Loxodon Smiter, is better (playability wise) than any rare besides the shocks in Gatecrash.
Also I think everysingle card on the Top list is undervalued.

I agree to the extent that the overall set just looks better for RTR than it does for gatecrash. RTR was crazy out of the gates and manages to still keep a reasonable box value above $80 now, while Gatecrash just seems a tad underwhelming on a general level and whos starting avg box value based on tcgplayer/ebay seems to be about $115 and thats a week and a half before the release. The hype just isnt quite there this time around and Im fairly certain we will see that value drop significanty especially in comparison to RTR in a much shorter period of time.
I do plan to post another update here soon for RTR and other standard sets, though I probably wont be posting about gatecrash in part because I wont have any of that product to deal with, the rest I have to do anyway so I figure I might as well post the information here for you guys for the time being :).
If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.
Yes, he's a local legend. He's only known to take his clothes off before he goes into the Ladies' Lockerroom. Nobody knows what he does in there because he's invisible, but it's almost certainly tons of masturbating.
gatecrash will be a lot better than most of you think...
it won't be RtR good but there is more value than any set in the mirrodin besieged sets....
Wizards spoiled us with RtR and now they have to power down. doesn't mean that Gatecrash won't have its gems.
I agree with this 100%. Gatecrash is better than your average set. It pales in comparison to RTR but atleast 90% of the sets would. RTR was pure gold. That doesn't mean GTC will be bad. Right off the bat you have 5 shocks, some solid rares (Boros Reckoner, Blind Obedience, Thespians Stage, etc), and some solid mythics (Duskmantle potentially, Obzedat, Zegana, Domri Rade, Lazav, etc). You also have all the charms, guildmages and some other solid uncommons. Not a bad set... just not nearly as good as RTR is all.
EDIT: hahahaha and yet this topic is in the RTR topic and not the GTC... go figure. I guess on topic I still think RTR will be the better product to invest in but I wouldn't ignore the good stuff from GTC entirely (especially if it ends up being opened less due to perceived weakness)
Do you guys think Foil Deathrite Shaman is a good trade/buy long-term? It's at $60 on SCG right now which is pretty high but I think it could go higher long term because of how good it is in Modern and Legacy. Just not sure if I wanna trade so much for it.
