Lol troll will have his time in the sun. He actually matches up fine vs thragtusk (one discard and he kills it all day). It's mainly that zombies in general has died down. Once pillar of flame isn't in every list ever, zombies will make a comeback. Give it a month.
As someone who plays Deathrite Shaman in Legacy, he is straight up amazing (though honestly my deck is one of the best fits for him out there). Fairly consistent mana ramp, with 8 fetches and wastelands in my deck, not to mention opponents typically have fetches as well; life gain vs agro decks, damage vs control decks, and GY hate vs various decks. All this for 1 mana of either one of my two colors.
Can someone explain why lotleth troll is so low? It's almost a strictly better wild mongrel at a higher rarity. Is it just a fluke, because I can't see why this card would be top tier material.
Wild Mongrel also existed in a different environment. Odyssey had cards with cheaper flashback than mana cost, madness, and threshold. Sure, flashback has returned, but the mana costs are lower than flashback and we have scavenge, but they're pretty much all unplayably costed for constructed. We do have better reanimation targets, but the reanimation spells cost so much they're almost out of the range you'd consider for constructed. Card X is superior to card Y really means nothing in Magic without taking into account the environments it's legal in. It's just like Terror and Shatter. Obviously, Terror is far more powerful in general, but tell that to limited for an artifact block.
flaming had a good point about reanimation spells being more expensive in today's standard. Now we pay 5 or more... back then we paid 4 and often got a bonus on top of it.
Also, Wild Mongrel and Lotleth Troll are really only similar in that they both cost 2 mana and both have a discard-powered pump ability.
WM - 1G

Discard a card: Wild Mongrel gets +1/+1 and becomes the color of your choice until end of turn.

LT's pump lasts forever but requires the discard to be a creature. Trample is a potent addition to a creature with pump effects. Regeneration is a notable bonus. The only real drawback is that LT goes in less decks because it requires a second colour. If LT cost GG, Mongrel would see a lot less play in favour of the Zombie.
The card's most recent move is on right. means no movement. is a card that wasn't on the list last update. This is the update's hottest mover. (#) is price in CND incl. shipping here.
Ash Zealot hit the $3 threshold this update, so now there are 24 cards worth opening in a booster pack.
Overall, the set cooled perhaps 5% in the past week, by my estimation, which is normal for a set at this point in its life cycle. With the amount of RTR that has been opened (extra print runs, insane demand, tons of drafting, etc) one would expect the prices to be falling faster. It looks like they'll stay very strong at least until MTGO redemptions begin in a few weeks. In any case, I'll focus my comments on cards that bucked the -5% trend.
Hallowed Fountain held its ground at $12 allowing it to become the 3rd best card in RTR, and distinguished itself, at least for the moment, as the most valuable shockdual. Deathrite Shaman's climb ended at $9 and it has now returned to $8, but hung on to 10th. Abrupt Decay fell another dollar to $6 - could it finally be ready to bottom? I just sold a foil copy for $20 plus shipping, and it went within hours of listing it on eBay, but that is likely a result of the card being playable in older formats where players often like to "bling out" their decks. Sphinx's Revelation went from $4 to $6, good enough for a 7 point rise! This incredibad Stroke of Genius variant must be in demand for Standard or block decks right now, but it's very hard to imagine it holding value in the long term. Rakdos surprised me by doing well this update, although it didn't manage to get above Dreadbore. As for Ash Zealot, I'm not sure how long it will be on the tally, since it only JUST made it on, and an argument could be made that it really should be $2.75 instead of $3, but we'll see how price action pans out over the next week or so.
I hope the update was useful! Enjoy the rest of your week.
With Dimir and Orzhov in Gatecrash I can see it reach $15 as Esper Control becomes more defined. Sam Black also wrote an article today on SCG proclaiming it as the best card in standard. I don't know if I can agree to that but Sphinx's Revelation is a definitly a very good card.
RDW is one card away from being tier 1. Between this block and the next it will get there. Ash Zealot is the best card in RDW. As such I can see it hitting $5-$6.
What makes Sphinx's Revelation great is that you can play it on an opponents turn after doing the math concerning possible damage done by the opponent.
Being able to survive that extra turn (if behind) and drawing 2-3 cards can put you in the lead (if your draw is proper) or at least allow you some room to play; it is a card with synergy that is almost a combo in itself: "survive longer and draw more cards".
Abrupt decay definitely has room to grow, strictly speaking it is a very strong card, but Standard needs to shift first. There are very few cards in Standard that are actually worth using it on ... Detention Sphere, Ash Zealot, and Rakdos Keyrune are the only ones to come to my mind and a Naturalize is just better in most circumstances. Creatures with CMC <4 in Standard tend to either have undying (making Decay very inefficient), regenerate, or some ETB effect that puts the opponent ahead when you 1-for-1 it with Decay. So I'd predict that at the very least we need to wait for Gatecrash before we can expect Decay to make any moves, because until then the Standard demand for it will be quite low ... It's just not a good card in the format that is driving its price point until aggressive 2 and 3 drops become something that you need to maindeck spells against. Right now you can just play Thragtusk and anything that Decay would hit is made irrelevant anyway.
I wasnt originally planning on posting another update, however upon doing another and possibly final repricing at the shop before we close it down in a couple weeks, I noticed that a LOT of prices changed significantly (nearly all down), so I figured that perhaps another update was in order: As always my prices come from the low end of ebay buy it nows (emphasis on playset/4).

All I can say is OUCH! Talk about a drop. I dont recall ever seeing a 1-week drop of that magnitude for a set before. And I dont even think RTR set redemption has even begun to hit the market yet from magic online. So much for RTR being the absolute must-buy set. I guess in this day and age where price increases can happen fast and so can price drops, this sort of thing may start to become more of a reality, certainly is a bit disconcerting though. Anyhow, my general shock aside, while some of the cards only settled a little, many of the rares dropped rather significantly 25-30% in most cases, and the mythics mostly dropped some, but not quite as badly, usually around 20% or so, with Sphinx Revelation being the lone shining star of the set, having actually increased from $5 to $7 this update and appears to be on its way up.
Anyhow, enjoy the update, Ill keep an eye on things until Im done at the shop, and if anything else significant changes after this, Ill probably pop on to let you guys know :).
I'm amazed at Sphinx's revelation. I made a bad call on that one - the card is crazy and ends game when it resolves usually. It's growing fast..
Thx Jeff for the update. Do you have expected values for the other standard legal sets atm? My shop is usually out of rtr now.
I have the next 4 days off from the shop, while the owner does a final detail inventory (kinda sucks, thats a ton of stuff to deal with x.x), so Ill try to post and update either later today (if Im not too busy at the shop, or tomorrow if all goes well.) So yeah, Ill do my best to get that last run-down of standard done for you guys here shortly :).
Reprints the one card that people point to when saying that art objectifies women.
Well done Wizards.
Liliana does not objectify women in any way at all. We have gotten to a point in our society that every single picture of a women must be objectifying a women in some negative way......blah blah blah.. That is not the case. (((Sarcasm)))Picture of a girl drinking a milk shake, must be sex related and putting women down, picture of girl sitting on a beach, picture of a girl driving a car, picture of a girl on the moon at a new space station.)))
You have a picture of an attractive strong power women who girls dress up as for anime conventions. What more do you want? The picture is fine, happy to see a reprint. Sick of of seeing people claim that everything in existence must be putting women down. Then all I have to do is replace the word "women" with anything else to get the same mentality; fish, cats, arabs, blacks, jews, men, environment, whites, chinese, old people, etc. It doesn't matter what word I put in. Stop sucking life out of everything man. That artwork of her is awesome. Stop putting stuff down man. Just stop. If the picture was really as negative as you claim she would totally nude, in a kitchen, making sandwiches and giving blow jobs. Her abilities would be horrible as well. +1 do nothing -2 do nothing -6 do nothing. Instead liliana of the veil is an amazing planeswalker comparable to jace, the mind sculpter with great art to appreciate.
My suggestion listen to some comedy radio for a while, pandora is free, youtube is free there is something out there for you. ***** go make fun of somebody. The whole world is so serious and campaigning for some cause, or someones rights, everything is a hate crime, racist, sexist. blah blah blah.
"O no mcdonalds must be slandering a hate crime against skinny people every time they make a big mac." hahaha jeeze You're just someone perpetuating another groups negative perspective that they've made you believe is correct. Look at the picture for a hour and tell me what's wrong with it? I don't see anything.
I have heard vague rumors of a moustache-dispensing vending machine in a distant laundromat, across the street from a tattoo parlor. However, this information is shaky, and time is of the essence.
So what's up with the massive drop in price of cards of RTR? Does anyone know why all of a sudden they tanked?
Given the METRIC TON of this product that has been openned, and with the format beginning to stabilize a bit more, I think a lot of people are really beginning to liquidate their extras, and with box prices and availability beginning to stabilize at under $100 now, we're seeing the reaction that a lot of people did of buying a mass amount of boxes and such and then selling them on ebay for a profit, reaching its inevitably conclusion where demand lowers, supply continues to rapidly grow, and you have price drops. I wouldnt be surprised if the third print run finally hit as well. I cant say for sure, since the shop Im at is closing with my leaving, we havent kept track of supply for a couple weeks now. I think its simply supply and demand. Demand is reduced since most everyone probably has all the RTR singles they mostly need, and supply is huge at the moment (the supply of singles at least due to all of those boxes openned.)
This is the kind of drop I expected after states, but supply just wasn't there. Prices stil indicate that is an excellent set to open for value and playables. The cards I see being used in wider foramts (deathrite shaman, shocks, abrupt decay) are all reasoanbly priced now and I would recommend getting your playset.
Sphinx's is a solid card in the low thragtusk meta we have now, but I expect its moment in the sun will end when the next set launches. Expect Rakdos Return to mirror Sphinx in useage and price.
People are surprised by this? I've been stalling as long as I could to pick up format staples because the Shocklands and others were going to drop far lower than the "conventional wisdom" would make you think because of just how good the set is.

That has always been my logic too - the set is amazing and that will indirectly make the set cheaper. People are still drafting this stuff like crazy and wizards is still printing away.
For a little perspective, the value of the singles in a box of RTR right now is exactly twice the value of the singles in a box of M13 at the same point in its life cycle.

I'd say RTR has a good chance of being higher than $80 in two months, since IMO it has a wider pool of in-demand cards. In fact, I would expect shockland prices will tick up after February since RTR won't be drafted again until Dragon's Maze, but those lands will still be in demand.
The card's most recent move is on right. means no movement. is a card that wasn't on the list last update. This is the update's hottest mover. (#) is price in CND incl. shipping here.
No cards crossed the $3 threshold this update, so there are still 24 cards worth opening in a booster pack.
Overall, the set cooled another 5% in the past week, by my estimation, which is normal for a set at this point in its life cycle. Many of the top end cards like the shockduals and the midrange stuff like Dreadbore all lost 50 cents or so, due to increased supply coming onto the market.
Angel of Serenity moved up to $19 but remains a ways behind Jace, who reached a new low at $30. Hallowed Fountain remains the top rare at $12 and sits essentially tied for 3rd place with Sphinx's Revelation which just jumped 10 spots this update! More on that card below. Vraska also shares the #3 spot at $12, but doesn't seem poised for much price volatility, as Sphinx's does. The red shockduals are down to ten bucks apiece now. Deathrite Shaman's hype seems to have cooled for the moment. Ash Zealot, which first appeared on the tally last update, didn't disappoint and moved ahead nicely. Available copies on eBay are quite low, which indicates a further price move may be imminent.
Sphinx's Revelation XWUU
Instant You gain X life and draw X cards.
Standard legal: Y
Current price: $12
Stroke of Genius X11U
Instant Target player draws X cards.
Standard legal: N
Current price: $6
Despite there being many times more copies of Sphinx's Revelation than Stroke of Genius available to the market, the more abundant and almost categorically inferior card is worth twice as much. Really goes to show you how Standard demand can make or break a card's price!
Lastly, just a note to those above who were discussing my comment about box value, please see my signature where I say "If this post is in a 'running tally' thread, I'm referring to the price of the item on my website".

Thanks for the comparison :). Yeah, RTR will be openned a ton, but then again, so was Innistrad, so long-term I expect the set to be a continued decent value. I would be rather shocked if the value dropped below $80/box (using my valuations), and wouldnt be surprised to see it stabilize at $90+ when all is said and done. RTR set redemptions from mtgo will inevitably cause some further devaluation, but with the new lower prices, I suspect we'll start seeing some increased demand as well in the long run, which will keep values from dipping too low. Once Gatecrash is released, RTR will likely hugely stabilize and potentially start to even rise a little. Likely wont rise back above $100 though even then, at least until after the release of m14 or the rotation.
I also want to give a big thanks to Rancored Elf for creating all these threads, giving us all a place to post our information about set values, and providing the perspective of an independent online store owner, and at the same time a foreign perspective (ie: outside the US) and the differences in how things operate on that side of the border. As much as Ive contributed over the years, Ive also learned a great deal from these threads as well.

From the looks of it, this far into M13, the prices were around $90. This far into RTR, the prices are a little under $160.
Just for clarification those are based on SCG prices and not taking into account going by common/uncommon sets for said commons/uncommons I presume?

And now, a quick comparison between Sphinx's Revelation and Stroke of Genius.
Sphinx's Revelation
XWUU
Instant
You gain X life and draw X cards.
Standard legal: Y
Current price: $12
Stroke of Genius
X11U
Instant
Target player draws X cards.
Standard legal: N
Current price: $6
Despite there being many times more copies of Sphinx's Revelation than Stroke of Genius available to the market, the more abundant and almost categorically inferior card is worth twice as much. Really goes to show you how Standard demand can make or break a card's price!
Lastly, just a note to those above who were discussing my comment about box value, please see my signature where I say "If this post is in a 'running tally' thread, I'm referring to the price of the item on my website".
.
