Apologies if it's been discussed before, but I haven't seen any mention of it in any of the other threads. What happened to this guy? He used to be $2-$3 for the longest time. I remember him slooooowly creeping up, but now he's suddenly in the $5-$6 range on tcgplayer. What's driving up his price? Is it just casual/commander appeal or is goblins making a comeback somewhere in the tournament scene?
It's a mythic that won't be reprinted in Modern Masters. I imagine some people play goblins for modern FNM now as I've seen it locally. It's still worth more than I anticipated.

Double strike goblin lackey is pretty good. While he's not a 4 of he does pop up in legacy lists from time to time. He's a mythic most people wrote off and forgot about but I'm not surprised for a price increase.
My friend uses this card and "Changling" creatures in a deck. Its <Snip> but funny when nobody expects it.
Any creature of this ability and effect is going to do some price fluxuations when it only costs 2 red.

Its tough being a goblin lackey these days, all those turn 1 DR Shamans... at least an instigator can trade with them. But ya if more people getting into modern you can bet people are gonna jam goblin decks together whether there very good or not.
If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.
Yes, he's a local legend. He's only known to take his clothes off before he goes into the Ladies' Lockerroom. Nobody knows what he does in there because he's invisible, but it's almost certainly tons of masturbating.

What? I must have missed that bit of info. Where did you hear that?
When the Legacy meta is not amenable to fast strategies with Goblin Lackey, Goblin pilots have historically gone bigger (which is why Warren Instigator saw its most play during the days of Mental Misstep in Legacy). With Deathrite Shaman being the modern Lackey roadblock, I've seen some discussion of reviving the Instigator-based lists. It wouldn't surprise me if that accounts for some of the upwards pressure.
Instigator has been climbing for a year on MTGO, while paper magic has seriously lagged behind as always. It's a mythic with a lot of casual appeal, and that always helps on MTGO once the card's a couple years out of standard, although in paper magic casual appeal typically does NOT help that much unless it's also an EDH card. Because of its MTGO price having trended upwards and stayed higher for a year, despite Goblins having no Modern success whatsoever, I don't think competitive players are the source of the price increase.
Goblins probably has very little chance of becoming a top tier deck in Modern. No Vial deck has actually broken through yet to see success, oddly enough, despite a ton of effort. I've played a fair bit of a homebrew R/G Goblins list in Modern back last year, and it's missing too many pieces, even though there are some wickedly fun hands (especially with the Instigator.) Goblins in Modern is, sadly, just a worse aggro deck than the alternatives, being both less resilient and less explosive than Affinity, and slower than RDW variants. Not having the mana denial plan available in Modern weakens the hope of building successful Vial decks. (There is the whole Thalia plan in legacy goblins, haven't tried that one yet in modern.)
If in fact a bunch of people start playing Modern next year (don't hold your breath, imho) they'll find out rather quickly that Goblins' potential is limited, but if there really were FNM-level adoption of the format (again, no way this becomes widespread) then I suppose it could be a popular choice.

Modern Masters does not include anything from the Zendikar block or newer. Warren Instigator was in Zendikar so it can't be included in the set.
