So here's the story so far: I'm a college student pursuing undergraduate studies and a Ph.D. in less than two years. These ventures aren't cheap and I'm unemployed. Additionally, almost all of the time I have to devote to this game comes in brief half-hour bursts, which are enough to contribute to some online forums but not really sufficient to get games in.
I have a sizable collection (between $6000-8000+) almost exclusively comprised of eternal staples. I would like to get some money out of it, but I am also wondering if it's even a good idea to sell. I have pages of fetches, a bunch of duals, and plenty of other stuff. A lot of it is pre-Alara, which makes me nervous with the release of Modern Masters in less than a year. However, I've heard plenty of horror stories about people who've sold all their cards and gotten back into the game some years later to discover that everything they used to own is now worth far more than they sold it for. I don't really think much of this stuff is going to skyrocket within the next couple years, but Ph.D.s take a while.
For an approximate list of my collection, go here. It's mostly up-to-date, and nothing major is missing. Note that there is a want and a have section; my collection is under haves.
Sell it. Getting rid of your collection that you don't even have the time to use is way better than going into debt.
If you think you're wasting money rebuying stuff you sold that went up in price, wait until you see what a little bit of debt adds up to.

I'm with the above posters. Keep a deck for yourself and make some money off the rest, even if stuff jumps your education will provide more money in the long run.
I guess the next question is where to sell? I would prefer to get rid of them myself instead of selling to a dealer just because there's more money in it that way, but the market around me is pretty poor. I might put up a sale thread here, but I have 0 iTrader feedback and I'm not looking to get ripped (especially since I'm an established trader on another site).

eBay is okay. I found that people bought cards from me even though I had zero feedback when I first started. The only thing is that they charge (I think) 9% of your final sale price. I'm pretty sure you get ~50 free listings (with one picture and no extra stuff) a month, so hopefully that's plenty. eBay's fees are really nothing compared to how much a dealer would rip you off, though.

Most people here will send payment first regardless of refs simply because that's the way you do it. If you're afraid of getting scammed, you can also require non-gift payments. I would highly recommend setting up a sales thread here.
Deal with people who have an okay amount of rep to begin with. That said, the users here with tons of rep are going to give you the more lowball offers because they are usually dealers or trying make the most profit on you shortselling your product.
Agree with all the above. Unless you want your cards b/c you are a collector and simply can't stand to see them go, sell and keep one deck for yourself.
Even if the cards cost more later to reacquire, hopefully that PHD will be paying you the big bucks and you can buy them later

I'd highly recommend making a sale thread on here. If you are wary at first I would say only deal with established members with decent iTrader ratings (20+ or so). You'll find most of the people on here are very nice and understanding plus you can get some good deals!
Ebay is easy enough. I've done hundreds of sales on ebay and haven't had any issues so far (knock on wood). Just order a big batch of toploaders and bubble mailers off ebay, do bubble mailers and tracking on orders over 10$.. and yeah.. good luck. School is #1 though. Magic can come again later.
Well, a lot of your eternal staples are more eternal/legacy than modern. I wouldn't worry about a value loss with those. I'd probably go ahead and move the tarmogoyf off if you're not using him or try to trade him for a dual or something, but until what's actually getting reprinted is confirmed, I wouldn't worry about most of your serious money cards losing value. I'd probably make a list of all your stuff that's usd in modern and sell off more expensive ones preemptivly against a rprint announcement, but sit on the premodern stuff till you better know what you really want to do. Maybe the modern stuff will give you enough cash to think longer about whether or not you want to part with the true legacy material, bcause a lot of what you have, if you ever decide to try to reacquire it, will be near unattainable without an equally large amount of cash. (Looking at you beta scrubland)

I've sold a lot on Ebay and I like it for simplicities sake. Remember that "undercutting SCG and Channel FireBall" is already more then expected and if your looking to move anything in bulk expect to have to sell for a pretty nice discount under what those sites list for.
