So, my friend has plateau, windswept heath and wooded foothills.
I haven't inspected them too closely, but they looked like they're in Excellent minus (-) condition, or maybe "Played" condition. There's no folds or anything, just junk on the cards, stains on the white border, some white (part of the card, not gunk, don't know what to call it though) on the back.
He was using them in an uril EDH which he dismantled and was going to sell them to a dealer, but his roommate stopped him, saying he'd use the cards. He didn't use them, so now I want to make an offer.
The problem is, I have no idea what would be a fair one to make.
He would end up selling to dealers, which would have given him maybe... 50 for all of them? Something like that?
I was thinking of offering 70, but going by magiccards.info, they should be around 90 (even in the Ex- condition they seem to be in?), so I kind of feel like I'm lowballing him by doing that.
What is your general policy when buying from friends, mtgs?
Do you offer to pay what you'd pay from a dealer, what dealers would buy it for, or try to find some compromise?
How much would you offer in this situation?
Thanks much.

I usually buy for 10 dollars less than the total price of my friends cards (I never buy anything worth less than 30) so I'd offer him 80 and some cards.

Anything between what dealers are willing to pay and what your friend could sell it for himself is reasonable. 70 seems perfectly fine if he doesn't feel like selling the cards himself.
If he was willing to take $50 from a dealer, then I would have just offered $50.
Also, it sounds to me like you are over-valuing the cards based on their condition. Without being able to see them myself, your description makes them seem worse than EX-. $90 is too high for NM copies of those particular cards, much less for played copies. $70 might be towards the upper end of that lot.
If you want to feel like you helped your friend, but got a solid deal for yourself, go with an offer of $60. $15 each for the Heath and Foothills and $30 for the Plateau is a decent deal for everyone.
I usually just offer a little above the dealer or what the dealer offers. Yes they may price out at 90, but he wouldnt ever be able to sell at 90 if that makes sense. The prices youre looking at are other dealers and shops. Its harder for him to sell them out at those prices.
Depends on the friend. Some friends of mine know i buy MTG for resale. I give them my buy list pricing and then give them an exact number after going through. Most don't want them so it ends up just cash in their pocket anyway when they want to take the time to research, sort, list on ebay, etc for a bit more. They'd also rather help out a friend, and i try to beat buylists for the main retailers anyway. Plus there's no shipping involved.
Others i might offer them the buylist price first but work my way up for their sake or depending on if the card is something i need for a deck vs. something to flip.
Usually I take a look at what he could get for it on eBay, subtract the fees, and make him an offer within that ballpark. If it's a good friend (or someone who just wants to get rid of the cards) then I'll take a bit off - but either way, I get a good price and they get close to the same amount of money as they would get from selling it anyways.

Yeah, my friend and I do the same. We check ebay and subtract the fees that ebay and paypal would take (10% or was it 9%?...). This way we get the same amount as ebay, but without the hassle.
