The Running Tally of Dragons of Tarkir
Welcome to the tally thread for Dragons of Tarkir. Here we will be keep track of the rise and fall of cards in particular set over the course of their time in Standard.
I will be leading them for the foreseeable future. Here are a few ground rules for the tally threads.

Discussions of price changes are fine and welcome. Same with speculation.

Dragons has been spoiled and is ready to be digested with values. The set seems okay so far. I will be updating this Friday morning prior to the Pre-Release so everyone have a good idea of the values of the set going into the Pre-Release.
Slightly off topic, but didn't think it warranted a whole new thread.. Other then manually counting them through the spoiler, anyone have a libnk to the common/uncommon/rare/mythic breakdown for this set? i.e. how many of each are there.
It's a large set, so 101 commons, 80 uncommons, 53 rares, 15 mythics, 15 basic lands. Total of 264 cards. Most large sets are 269, I believe, but DTK has 5 fewer basics than normal. The number of basics will vary from set to set (Theros had 20 basics, RTR had 25), but the core number of 249 is the same for each large set.
Figure I may as well toss out an initial value list for this set as well. Since its so early on I'm just looking at the lower end of tcgplayer for now, will include information from ebay in future updates.

Total set value:
Mythics: $105
Rares: $63
Uncommon/Common set: $8
Total singles set value: $176
Overall Average box value:
Mythics: $105/15 = $7/mythic x 4.5 mythics/box = $31.50
Rares: $63/53 = $1.19 x 31.5 rares/box = $37.50
Uncommon/Common set: $8 x 1.3 sets = $10
Foils: $5
Overall average box value: $84
Well, gotta say, an overall average box value that STARTS at $84 is doomed to failure from the start. That said, casual players and especially dragon lovers (dear lord, the sheer number of dragons, of course, given the set name, did you really expect anything different? Hehe.) should love the set. Will be interesting to see how the set shapes up over the next several weeks. I'll see about doing another update in a week or so as time allows.
Dumb question but will there be fetchlands in the basic land slot like there was for FRF? I'm pretty sure there won't be since this is a large set but I want to double check as I haven't heard anything about it.

Nope. DTK is aimed primarily at two color decks in limited, so there's not as much need for color fixing.
There are definitely sleepers in this set. People are forgetting that this set is the start of a new block, and these cards will be in standard for a long time. My picks on sleepers:
All of the Command cycle
Sidisi
Risen Executioner
And many others. This looks like a strong set to me. People just don't see it yet, but they will.
It's worth noting that this set is only drafted at 2 packs per draft for a very short while. Because this is the start of a new block and these cards are going to be around a while, this is probably a fantastic set for long-term box value and for price rises this Winter when Khans rotates out.

I just want to mention that this is an excellent point. I read this post and thought "Wait a minute! That rotation schedule can't be right!" So I went to MaRo's article to confirm it. And I was wrong.
Khans of Tarkir and Fate Reforged rotate in Spring 2016. Dragons of Tarkir doesn't rotate out until the fall, when "Lock" comes out. So any Standard cards that hit will be in demand longer.

This set's value is just terrible. Every non-mythic at under 5$, has there ever been a big set where that was the case at pre-order time, when the vast majority of cards are overpriced? Not only that, but all non-planeswalker mythics at under 7$, and several of those aren't guaranteed that they'll even see play.
Probably skipping the pre-release for this one, if you don't pull a PW, you could easy win 10+ packs and still not break even, when you consider that a lot of those 2-4$ rares will fall to bulk soon enough.
I really believe Collected Company is a Modern sleeper. I can easily see this card being around the $10 mark if the set pulls a Dragon's Maze in anticipation for MM2. There's a few decks that want it like Zoo and my friend has been playing around with a Junk list that uses it as well. Otherwise the set really looks terrible in terms of value.

I'm skeptical. Just comparing it to the other CMC 4 cards in modern right now, most of them have a much higher impact on the board. Cards like Splinter Twin, Past in Flames, and Scapeshift will outright win you the game if they resolve. The others, like Cryptic Command, Siege Rhino, Supreme Verdict, have a huge board impact. Collected Company has to compete with those cards in the four-drop slot, and I'm trying to think of what sort of consistent result from resolving one could have as much impact as one of the other cards I just listed. Double Goyf?

How is it a Modern sleeper if it's already causing other cards to skyrocket in value despite having never been played? It seems fine...

Which cards in particular? I'm not trying to show you up, I'm genuinely curious. Maybe it's just my own fault but I haven't seen much discussion about this card. I really think $4 is too little for a card of this caliber especially if it has indeed caused other cards to rise.

Congregation: http://www.mtgstocks.com/cards/4630 There's some combo junk people say it viable because it's all instant speed... Saffi, Blood Artist something or other?

Right, I forgot about Congregation. My friend was testing the deck and he used new Anafenza, Kitchen Finks, and Varolz as a sac outlet for infinite lifegain. He mentioned that Congregation was in consideration because it let him find all the combo pieces.
I pre-ordered a box because there is much in this set I am interested in, and am actually cautiously optimistic that I will find useful cards therein. Overall, I am waiting to see which cards become useful before I write some of them off, because there are always sleeper cards that it takes time to discover homes.
