Shalin stands behind and in between Karkus and Shinta, pulling out a green gem with the face of a tiger on the inside. "I hope we don't have to travel too far into Kamigawa. I know very little wildlife outside of Alara."

A mere ten days after the Mending, a young knight of Valeron and a young ranger of Eos made a discovery that would change Alara forever.
Karkus is hesitant about entering the town as mundane humans usually are more than a bit put off by his appearence and may be even more so in a world where the mortals are at war with spirits.
"I'm going to go ahead," Shalin offered. She slowly walked into town and began asking people about Eight-and-a-Half Tails, whether it be directly through individuals or a clue pointing toward someone who would know anything about his whereabouts.

Most of what Shalin finds is things she had already gleaned. That Eight-and-a-Half-Tails is a great philanthropist, a philosopher. A leader of the kitsune people. No one, however, talking about the missing fox.
Karkus eventually follows Shalin into town and looks for any suspicious looking people or beggars that he could persuade some information out of about the fox.
Inside they see a kitsune fencing with three others, using two swords himself. Dressed in a short, form-fitting kimono. More importantly, with a golden tail.
Understanding the importance of concentration during any sporting event, Shalin observed quietly, waiting for a break in the action. Not even the greatest Nayan drumhunters could successfully spar with multiple competent people; to be able to fend off three attackers must have required a tremendous amount of training.

A mere ten days after the Mending, a young knight of Valeron and a young ranger of Eos made a discovery that would change Alara forever.
As they watch, they can see that the fox's style seems is rather interesting. Whenever he's attacked, his counterattack has his opponents on his knees. A similar going-on occurs when they block his attacks. As if he's anticipating the block and preparing to hit harder while they're recoiling.
The match ends, however, with three downed opponents. No fatal blows, but there is a fair amount of blood on the blades. The kitsune sets his weapons on a rack for cleaning before returning to help his opponents up.
"Good work this time, Kaga. But try to hold your blade straighter when you block, or you're going to end up getting your hand sliced."
There's similar encouragement to the other two before the kitsune moves to clean his weapons. And that's when he notices the other three. "Can I help you?"
It took a moment to Shinta to react, as he was still impressed by the demonstration
"Yes, you must be Sensei Golden-tail" he says, bowing a little
"My name is Shinta, we come from the City of Estark, in the plane of Dominaria, we received a message about an important sage named Eight-and-a-half-tails being kidnapped, and we were sent here to help her, they say you could help us"
The kitsune returns the bow, matching Shinta for angle before nodding. "Yes, I am Sensei Golden-tail. And I am glad for your arrival. But please, follow me out back to the garden. These things are best not talked about in the open."
He leads the three to the back of the pagoda. There, bamboo fences in a pool of gray rocks and pebbles that are intricately raked around large rocks, like islands in the sea. Here, the Sensei makes his way to a large rock without disturbing the patterns. There, he sits and turns to them.
Karkus floats over the zen garden without even touching the pebbles and comes to a stop in front of the sensei. We do not know much at all, about the situation or this strange land and its customs. All we know now is that a philosopher named Eight-and-a-Half Tails has gone missing and will somehow disrupt your trade with Lyre's Bazaar.
Sensei looks at Karkus with amusement as he floats over him. Then he shakes his head at the three.
"Eight-and-a-Half-Tails is no mere philosopher. She's more the unspoken leader of the kitsune. She's a monarch in her own right, though no one, including Eight-and-a-Half-Tails herself, will say it. Her wisdom has gotten the kitsune through the war so far. Especially her negotiations with the humans to let us live among them, as we have no land of our own now."
He looks among the three levelly.
"The public doesn't know that she's missing. To them, she's gone into a retreat again to meditate, or has gone into private negotiations, or one of a million other things that she does that puts her under the radar. The truth, though...
"Eight-and-a-Half-Tails is missing. She's been missing for over a week, and we don't know where she is. We assume the spirits have kidnapped her for leverage over the kitsune during the war. It's our job to get her back."
"As to the location of Eight-and-a-Half-Tails... We're going to have to go to the lands of the spirits in order to find her. We'll have to do some investigation. We know for a fact that she isn't currently in human lands. Unfortunately, that's all we know at this point."
Shalin perked up slightly after hearing a location mentioned. "I used to do reconnaissance work near the Valley of Progenitus back on Naya. If there's any scouting that needs to be done, I'll be glad to." She paused to turn toward Karkus and Shinta, then turned back toward the kitsune. "What about the spirit world itself? If the human and spirit worlds are separate, then the spirit world must be dangerous to us. What in particluar should we look out for?"

"It's hard to say, really. Mostly, it's like the human world. But subtle differences. Different colors, skies that move faster, so on and so forth. Sometimes the color drains out. But in the middle of many spirits, the world tends to shift and change. There's really no predicting it."
Karkus looks over at the Nayan I don't think we need to specifically scout this area out, especially not individually. Besides the spirits would most likely be more hospitible to me than a creature of flesh and bone as yourself.
"This will bring you to the human lands. You'll have to find your way from there."
