Empty Square/Empty Square
Xile walks down the corridor, looking over his shoulder at Empty Square. "So, have any experience with time magics?" he asks.
"No, I have not," says Empty Square. "I've been with House Lat-Nam for over a year now, and to date I've acquired countering magics and summoning spells, but nothing too elaborate. I have had some experiences with the element of time, however. The mechanics behind it are quite complex, but I do know it is possible to manipulate the fabric of space and time. Naturally, it is not something one can do lightly, so I understand that there are risks and the training will be rigorous."
Xile chuckles. "We all have experience with time. Every moment of our lives, we are moving through it. But you say you've had experience with temporal manipulation. Interesting. Very interesting..."
He smiles at Empty Square. "Know anything of the time rifts? Ever use time as a resource? As a weapon?"
"I've never used time as a weapon," says Empty Square. "I was always told that time is a very delicate element that cannot be abused. The consequences of mishandling temporal energy can be quite devastating. With that being said, I am interested in the deeper concepts of time, and I hope to gain some understanding so that, like you say, I could use it as a resource responsibly."
"It's not that it cannot be abused, it's that it shouldn't. And you're absolutely right; paradoxes are not fun at all. The thing about a Chronomancer is that you can cast spells into the past, and in the future. Be very careful about doing the first one, though. If you declare the intention of casting a spell, and you don't follow through on it... well, I heard of an Orzhov who did that and vanished in a blast of white light."
He opens a door to a workshop covered with tools and supplies. Off to the side, a goblin and a faerie are having a discussion next a chalkboard covered with equations.
"There are way too many variables, here!"
"Yes, but if you look here, these three terms," the goblin circles a µ, an n, and a ß, "become trivial under normal circumstances, simplifying the equation to this!" and points to an equation down at the bottom.
"Well we're not dealing with—oh, hey, Xile. Who's the new guy?" the faerie comes flying over to Xile and Empty Square.
"This is our team. We're going to be studying a particularly interesting time rift. Now I've just got a few questions. Do you have anything in terms of safety equipment?" he asks, pointing to the goggles on his forehead. "Anything like thick gloves? You know when to duck and cover?"
"My reflexes are quite well, I suppose. As far as protection, I have this." Empty Square reaches into his coat and withdraws the Demat Gun. "I use it when I cast my spells. I also have a sonic screwdriver which may come in handy."
"I've actually had the Demat Gun for a while. I was able to build it with the help of a friend. And I have no doubt that staying alert is critical to survival. You needn't worry about that. So what's this time rift we're studying?"
"Well, simply, there were a group of three time rifts in this one field that we were studying. They were open to some time in the past. One of them spontaneously disappeared, and we captured an elemental nearby, which appears to be a rift elemental. We have the thing in secure storage right now. I was waiting for a fourth Izzet before we let it loose and examine it, but if you're willing to volunteer..."
Empty Square nods. "I'll see what I can do. I have to say, this is almost like being back at Torchwood." Realizing that no one in the room knows of Torchwood, he clarifies, "It's a special sort of institution that deals with paranormal activity, particularly involving rifts."
As Empty Square heads through the door, he replies to Pilnix and Cran, "Torchwood does try to study the how and why of these rifts. At the same time, they also have to deal with anything that comes through the rift so as not to alarm the general public." Turning to Xile, he asks, "Speaking of which, has anything come through these rifts?"
Xile leads them into another room. Several protective barricades are arranged around the room, with some sets of heavy protective gloves. There is a sealed box in the center of the room. Whatever inside is making a swishing noise. "Oh yeah, things have come through. Really, anybody who is there tries to do their best to take care of them. Creatures from the past, alternate presents, and future..."
He looks at Empty Square. "Those ones are the really interesting ones."
"Preventing general public alarm isn't a concern, really," Cran says, heading for one of the barricades. "Preventing general public casualties is."
"Well, what we're going to is give the cage a small electrical charge, open the box. We're going to see what it does once it's released, and hopefully see any attacks it has. Then, we're going to open up a controlled rift with one of our spells, see how it reacts."
He turns to Cran. "Did you set up the charge too?"
"It's already on."
There's a small *POW* as Pilnix rockets past Empty Square. "OW!" he shouts.
"Alright, everybody ready?" Xile positions himself behind a barricade. Pilnix flies behind Xile, looking carefully over the latter's shoulder. He starts gathering mana to himself. "In three, two, one!"
He uses the telekinetic magic he had gathered to unlatch the lid of the box, and lift it off.
Empty Square sees something lift out of the box, and a flash of blue and red...

Empty Square points to the box and opens his mouth to speak, but pauses. "Wait a minute," he says after a moment. "We just did this. We were already in here; we were behind the barricades getting ready to let that rift elemental out. What's going on?"
Cran looks at Empty Square strangely, and continues towards the barricades.
Xile, meanwhile, turns meaningfully towards Empty. "Really? Are you saying you've done something like this already, or there may be some kind of loop?"
Pilnix comes in, carrying goggles. "Here you go," he says, handing them to Empty Square.

"Do they work more with trying to find out the how and the why? If so, then this'll be a lot like this 'Torchwood.'"
"Great. Pilnix, get Empty Square some goggles. I'll show you where we've got it." Xile leads Empty Square through a door.

"Cran, you said you'd set up the cage."
"I did."
"Well, where is it?"
Cran holds up a switch. The cord from it goes up into the ceiling. "Right here," he says, and flips it.
The ceiling opens up, and a cage comes down from the ceiling, enclosing the box. Something like a snarling noise issues from the box.
"Oh. That'll come in handy," Xile says.
