So I’ve just had the War of the Spark novel delivered and upon reading the first few pages there seem to be some massive gaps in the storyline from the point we left on Dominaria and the Core Set 19 Bolas back story.
The Ravnica and Ravnica Alliegance stories seem to have just been buying time with filler until the book release but there’s no real context to the novel due to the massive gaps in story.
Or did I just miss an article that had all the info on what happened during the last two sets?
Without book spoilers can anyone link me where I can find the info because I honestly can’t find it anywhere!
So I've done some trawling and this is kind of where all the key characters to do with Ravnica are at before the book (mostly copy pasted from the mtg wiki) :
Ral
After Bolas's crushing defeat of the Gatewatch on Amonkhet and the collection of his Eternal Army, he sent Tezzeret to fetch Ral.[3] In his name, Ral schemed to take control of the Izzet League on Ravnica. He also turned Project Lightning Bug into a beacon to call other planeswalkers to Ravnica.[4] However, his loyalty was divided. When Ral made a device to fulfill Niv-Mizzet's plan of stealing the power of the Guildpact, Dovin Baan found out and played along until right before Bolas' arrival on the plane and then sabotaged the device, leaving Jace as the Living Guildpact.
Dovin
After realizing that Tezzeret was not the true mastermind behind the Planar Bridge, Baan decided to look for Tezzeret's master. Walking right into Bolas claws, he was taken in by the dragon's intelligence and "flawless planning". Bolas then offered Dovin something Dovin couldn't turn down, the chance to reshape a plane into flawless and ordered efficiency. Since his first visit to Ravnica to recruit the Gatewatch, Dovin had itched to improve the guild system, so he willingly jumped at the chance to take over the Azorius Senate on Ravnica.[9] Manipulating the system from the inside he exploited one loophole after another to disrupt the chain of command - occupying judges and senators with often-overlooked (but technically required by law) paperwork, rescheduling key meetings, and arranging the ousting of people in key positions of power Dovin emerged as the new head of the Lyev Column, replacing the unpopular hussar Agmand Sarv. When Isperia was killed by Vraska, he took over as guildmaster. As guildmaster, Dovin showed the guild how to make spy thopters and to use precognitive mages to arrest people before crimes would be committed.
When Ral Zarek made a device to fulfill Niv-Mizzet's plan of stealing the power of the Guildpact, Dovin found out and played along until the right before Bolas arrival on the plane and then sabotaged the device, leaving Jace as the Living Guildpact.
Vraska
In Bolas' Meditation Plane, the dragon read her mind and witnessed the false memory created by Jace, in which Vraska had found Azor and turned him, along with all her challengers, into gold using the power of the Sun. Pleased, the dragon called her "Guildleader Vraska" and rewarded her with the information where Jarad was imprisoned. As Vraska set out to petrify Jarad, she couldn't help but feel that both she and Bolas missed something very important during their meeting.
Back on Ravnica, Vraska has killed Jarad and has established herself as guildmaster.[17]She is helped by the Erstwhile (which are more durable and intelligent, than regular Golgari rot zombies), and the Kraul. The Devkarin are bitter about this and are wanting the current Matka, Izoni to take over. By order of Bolas, Vraska kills Isperia after the guild summit.
Lavinia
Lavinia managed affairs while Jace was away on Zendikar and Innistrad, dealing with the Eldrazi threat. Afterwards, she was informed about his planeswalker nature and his affiliation with the newly formed Gatewatch. After some ratifications from Jace, she was willing to allow them in his residence. When Dovin Baan arrived from Kaladesh to hire the Gatewatch as a security force, Lavinia also brought news of a series of petrifications of several influentual Azorius members. This led Jace to suspect that Vraska could have returned. Lavinia was tasked to cooperate with Gideon Jura to learn more about the assassinations. When Chandra disappeared along with Liliana, Lavinia forbade Jace to leave Ravnica again for such a long time, reminding him of his duties as the Living Guildpact.[4] Jace left anyway when Liliana Vess reported that she had seen Tezzeret on Kaladesh.[5]
Jace's disappearance worried her, but she steadfastly refused to violate the law of the land by stepping into his duties.[6] However, she refused to acknowledge Dovin Baan's authority when he became guildmaster after Isperia's assassination by Vraska.
Kaya
Kaya resurfaced on Ravnica, as part of the Orzhov Syndicate.[5] Bolas hired her to kill the Obzedat and become guildmaster of Orzhov in exchange for him helping her "troubled family". Despite Teysa warning against it, Kaya has been freeing people from the debt they owe the guild, particularly the bound ghosts. On the other hand, she heightened the tithes on the population, until riots ensued.
Domri
With the help of Bolas he rose up through the ranks of the Gruul, becoming the guildmasterby defeating the cyclops Borborygmos. The shaman Nikya sees his ascension as the first sign of the coming of the End-Raze.[2] As the precarious accord among the guilds teetered on the brink of collapse, Domri led the Gruul in a concerted effort to tip the world into chaos. He amassed an enormous mob to rampage through the city streets, making sure that every guild suffered painful losses to keep them at each other's throats
If that helps anyone else's confusion then good job me!
