His flavor text refers to him losing his (planeswalker?) spark, and his abilities reflect a power of stone (Using the land to do damage and pump himself). He sounds very Lithomancer-ish to me.
Can someone else either confirm or disprove this? Or even share an opinion.
Garbage for constructed, costs way too much mana and can't even deal with walkers.
To sum it up. Creature removal doesn't take care of Plainswalkers...how am I to respond to a statment like that? It's like somebody saying division symbols suck at simple addition.
There are lots of legendary creatures that never get any story beyond their card. Regarding Ob Nixilis, one of the points they stressed about Zendikar was how wild the mana there is and how it made it difficult even for planeswalkers to use their powers. I think Ob Nixilis' flavor was created to reflect this point rather than associate him with the overall story.
Also in the Zendikar block novel Sorin mentions a name while dazed. I seem to remember a lot of people speculating that that was the name of the lithomancer. Nothing ever came of that though. Then again, nothing was really resolved by the end of the novel either.
You could say that about any landfall card though. I always thought of Ob's ability as him sucking the spark out of you. I still think he's the third 'walker though, who else would it be?

Well, Karn's abilities aren`t really lithomancy (which has to do with rock and stone). Was he even around when the Eldrazi were originally sealed too?
In the storyline, yes, the Eldrazi are still lose but still on Zendikar.
Gideon left Zendikar to look for a cabal of Planeswalkers on Ravica to help him (Yes, Jace again).
Sorin simply left.
Nissa leaves to search for Sorin to make him repair the seal, not knowing that Sorin no longer has the power to do so (he could only repair the old seal, but now that it is broken, his neowalker power isn`t enough to create a new one).
Chandra never stuck around long enough to see the Eldrazi. She ran off to burn whoever gave her the original map to Zendikar.
The Third walker could easily be Karn. No offense here, but didn't Karn create an artificial plane. Then he left and came back to find all the trouble with Memnarch. I could see a Brady weave of when Karn was available to Zendikar to help lock away the Eldrazi.
aren't the Eldrazi still on the lose right now in the storyline?
Since the next rotation is SOM and that book is about finding Karn, it seems logical to me that seeking Karn for a reason (of locking up the eldrazi) leads to SOM.
karn DID create an artificial plane. i think he named it ulgrotha (i could be very wrong, someone please correct me)
memnarch warped said plane into what we know as mirrodin. karn never sealed the eldrazi. i doubt he was even existent when that happened.

He ascended as part of the invasion and AFAIK was the penultimate oldwalker with only Jeska ascending between the Invasion story arc and the Mending. The only thing that is stopping me from completly rejecting it is Karn's ability to Timetravel. It could be a future version of Karn that came back to seal them away but that feels like to big a fudge that I hope they don't end up using it.

Ob Nixilis was created sort of randomly, he's not meant to be part of the storyline any more than Wrexial or Lorthos. The concept of a demonic former planeswalker bound to the plane was cool, so they attached the concept to a card. No more than that.
Luminum Can's got it down. My hyper-advanced senses and reasoning skills point towards Ob Nixilis being a flavourful character without any bearing on the story. Remember Rorix Bladewing? Or perhaps Silvos, Rogue Elemental? Legends with a ton of implied fluff but no bearing on the story.

[I was permabanned and all I got to show for it was .... well, nothing.]
I think someone from Creative/Wizards themselves had stated that they had created Ob initially, but then sort of shuffled him off and forgot what to do with him. I have no idea where this is, though.
