Hello everyone, hope someone might help me figure out the following two interactions:
Question 1
I have Reya Dawnbringer on the battlefield and Doomgape in my graveyard. At the beginning of my upkeep I return Doomgape to the battlefield thanks to Reya's ability.
Will Doomgape's "At the begging of your upkeep" ability trigger in this case?
(I think it won't because Reya's ability needed to resolve before Doomgape returned, which means that the "beginning of my upkeep" is already over.)
Question 2
I have Reya Dawnbringer AND Doomgape on the battlefield. At the beginning of my upkeep I sacrifice Doomgape due to its ability.
Will I be able to use Reya's ability to immediately return Doomgape to the battlefield?
(Again, I don't think so as the "beginning of my upkeep" will already be over because Doomgape's ability resolved.)
In other words, when/how does the "beginning of my upkeep" end?
In general, a triggered ability must exist at the appropriate place and time for that ability to trigger when its condition is met (C.R. 113.6, 603.2). Thus, Reya's and Doomgape's triggered abilities won't trigger unless they are on the battlefield as "your upkeep" begins (C.R. 113.6).
1. No, since Doomgape wasn't on the battlefield at the beginning of your upkeep (C.R. 113.6).
2. No; once Reya's and Doomgape's triggered abilities trigger, you will have to put them on the stack right after that (C.R. 503.1, 117.5, 113.8), and as you put the Reya ability on the stack, you have to target a creature card in your graveyard, if possible, right then and there (C.R. 603.3d, 601.2c).
EDIT (Oct. 13, 2019): Edited, including to add a rule citation and because some rules were renumbered with Core Set 2020.
In other words, when/how does the "beginning of my upkeep" end?
This is like asking "How long does midnight last?"
Well, it doesn't! Midnight is that infinitely short time when the clock's handles are perfectly aligned, and it's over as soon as it begins!
Midnight does not actually 'begin' nor does it 'end'; it's nothing but a 'click'!
Although the Upkeep Step has a duration, its beginning (and its end) have no duration; they are punctual events. Just 'clicks' in the timeline.
Anything which trigger at the beginning of upkeep (or any other step or phase) must be in place BEFORE the Upkeep begins, otherwise it's already too late.
