I cannot find an answer to this question. If I play Phyrexian Ingester, but someone responds by using a Searing Spear on it, would it take the damage before or after it Imprints on a creature?
It depends. First, it's not until after Phyrexian Ingester resolves that it becomes a legal target for Searing Spear, so you can't respond to the Ingester by Spearing it.
With that said, the ETB trigger can be responded to, and in this case, it's likely that said trigger was what was being responded to with the Spear. In this case, the Spear resolves first, deals 3 points of lethal damage to the Ingester, the Ingester is destroyed by lethal damage, and only then does the ETB trigger resolve and exile the chosen non-token creature.

Phyrexian Ingester's Imprint works the same way as any other ETB in that once its ability is put on the stack and the active player passes priority, your opponent has the opportunity to respond before the ETB resolves.
So yes, it can be Searing Speared before a creature is Imprinted. The Ingester will die, but the ability will still resolve so the targeted creature will still be exiled.
Basically, if you want to open packs to get cards for Standard and Modern, the simpler approach is to just buy all the singles you need and then set some money on fire to make up the difference.

The Ingester's ability is a triggered ability and uses the stack, so it can be responded to. As in every case of response, the thing done in response resolves first. So Searing Spear would resolve before Imprint, presumably killing the Ingester before it gets a boost. However, note that this doesn't stop the ability from resolving (once activated or triggered, an ability is independant from its source). The creature targeted by the Ingester's ability still ends up exiled, it's just that the Ingester is not there to be boosted by its stats.

I'm a former judge (lapsed), who keeps up to date on rules and policy. Keep in mind that judges' answers aren't necessarily more valid than those of people who aren't judges; what matters is we can quote the rules to back up our answers. When in doubt, ask for such quotes.
As a slight follow up, because the imprint ability is a "may" ability. You can choose not to exile the target on resolution (if, say, you were targetting your own creature).

This is correct.
