Can Mystic Compass be used to bypass the effects of Glacial Chasm, especially the cumulative upkeep, for your turn if it's used in response to the trigger?
Unfortunately, no. The cumulative upkeep triggers at the very start of the upkeep. No matter how Glacial Chasm's characteristics change, it is still the same object when trigger resolves, and will be sacrificed unless you pay the upkeep cost.
No. All it will do is give it one of the five basic land types (Swamp, Island, Forest, Mountain, or Plains) until end of turn. It will not make the land into a basic land, and will not affect any of the land's abilities - including the cumulative upkeep.
Activating the ability of Mystic Compass will allow your Chasm to tap for an appropriate color of mana based on what land type you choose - the mana ability is intrinsic to the basic land type (i.e. All lands with the "Plains" subtype intrinsically have the ability to tap for white mana.).

Correcting this bit, since the compass does not say in addition to its other types all the rules text on the target card is replaced by that of the appropriate basic land. It would lose cumulative upkeep, unfortunately by the time it loses that ability the trigger is already on the stack.

So it does. Such an odd rule, it is. For reference:
Quote from CR »
305.7. If an effect sets a land’s subtype to one or more of the basic land types, the land no longer has its old land type. It loses all abilities generated from its rules text and its old land types, and it gains the appropriate mana ability for each new basic land type. Note that this doesn’t remove any abilities that were granted to the land by other effects. Setting a land’s subtype doesn’t add or remove any card types (such as creature) or supertypes (such as basic, legendary, and snow) the land may have.
If a land gains one or more land types in addition to its own, it keeps its land types and rules text, and it gains the new land types and mana abilities.
Thank you for the correction.

I didn't think so. Had to ask though. I don't think there's any way to abuse this card without skipping your upkeep via Eon Hub, which is really too bad. Thanks everyone!

Changing the subtype of the Glacial chasm is not going to remove it from the stack, you will still have to pay the cost or sacrifice the chasm.
