MaRo states in his recent column: "note that flickering a token creature essentially kills it."
When a token is exiled, it disappears forever.
But I remember (from Time Spiral block I guess) that when when a token is exiled AND returned in a single effect, state based effects never killed it.
Not recently. But, the rules were amended such that a token that leaves the battlefield for any reason can't be returned to the battlefield. It remains in whatever zone it moved to, and then ceases to exist when state-based actions are checked.
110.5g A token that has left the battlefield can’t move to another zone or come back onto the battlefield. If such a token would change zones, it remains in its current zone instead. It ceases to exist the next time state-based actions are checked; see rule 704.
I can't speak for the rules from years ago, but the rule now is that if a token leaves a zone it can never leave the zone it was moved to. So if a token is exiled, then by rule it can never return to the battlefield. That is true even though state based actions haven't caused the token to cease to exist yet.

OK, thanks. I just found the rulings on Momentary Blink.
If Momentary Blink is cast on a token creature, the token will not return to the battlefield, because of the rule that says a token that leaves the battlefield can't come back.

What's going on here, did the rule change?
