I've never played with paying echo in the following situation until recently when we read the reminder text for echo. It doesn't seem like it works like this, but do you need to pay echo cost if you steal something? Ie they play it (uktabi drake for an echo example), they pay echo, then you mind control it... it came under your control since your last upkeep, right? It seems totally wrong, so maybe 'coming under control' means something more subtle than it seems. Anyway, we played it where you had to pay for the echo the other day, and since that seems wrong to me I thought I'd get it cleared up one way or the other.
Yes. Echo cares about whether it came under your control since your last upkeep, not whether it entered the battlefield since then. "Came under your control" is quite literal.
702.28a Echo is a triggered ability. "Echo [cost]" means "At the beginning of your upkeep, if this permanent came under your control since the beginning of your last upkeep, sacrifice it unless you pay [cost]."

Yes, you do have to pay the echo cost or sacrifice the creature.
Interesting. I don't know how many times that came up and we played it wrong before last Sunday, but I've been playing a looong time and never noticed that interaction. Thanks for the quick answers guys. Close at will.

Btw, do you have to report a thread to get it closed, such as in this case?
We normally leave threads open in order to leave room for follow-up discussions. We usually only close threads if they've gone too far off topic, are threatening to go off topic, or if the thread was old and someone necro'ed it.
