I didn't think they started printing foreign cards before tempest, are those cards real?
Did they print alpha in foreign languages? How many languages of the current 11 were printed back then? (I'm pretty sure it's 11, simplified chinese, traditional chinese, japanese, korean, portugese, russian, italian, spanish, french, and german besides english)
And what I'm most curious about - The printing of Beta was 7 million some cards.... Does that include foreign?
So is there even less English? How many of each language were printed?
I don't see how they could have anticipated the game would blow up like that, I can't see them printing the first set in 11 languages.... Definitely not too many of each, shouldn't some foreign black lotuses be worth even more?!
If you hear about a "foreign beta" set, it's most likely either Revised or 4th Edition. It was a bit of a tradition to print the first core set in a new language as black-bordered, at least for the initial run. So, you'll run into things like foreign duals on occasion, but you'll never find foreign power, as Alpha/Beta/Unlimited were english-only.
You will never run into foil Japanese power (at least, not legal copies anyway, much to the dismay of many I'm sure). I think Legends was the first printed in another language.
*edit* Aw, above poster beat me to it

To you and the other poster, I've seen a korean arabian nights. Search it on ebay, I guess it's a fake?
Can it be fake though? It's not the faded/washed out version from later sets, it looks like arabian to me and has the expansion symbol........ I don't know though, and since 2 people seem to think legends was first, it's probably a safe bet that you're right.
How many languages was legends printed in?
EDIT: OMG IT'S JAPANESE. I've never made a mistake like that I feel like a dumbass now......
The actual order it was printed in was Italian Dark first, IIRC. Then they went back and printed Legends (which, if the rumors I've heard are true, was due to poor contract writing on WotC's part back then).
To answer the other one:
It's because that's Japanese, and is from Japanese Chronicles.

japanese chronicles used original expansion symbols? lame.....
Funny how if what you're saying is true, they started printing foreign cards in the weak and crappy sets, lol.
Anyone know when the latest language first saw print or why there's no indian languages? There's 6 indian languages and it's one of the most populated countries, I don't get it....
EDIT: On second thought there's no eastern or even middle eastern languages printed, probably religious reasons?
Erm, so does English. It's just not BB in English. It was part of the old policy WotC had of printing every card in every language in black border first. That's why Renaissance existed, and when Italian Ren is different from French and German, because it had Dark and Legends already in print, so they didn't need to reprint them.

Wow, am I the only one who finds the history of wizards globalizing interesting?!
I think it's hard to distinguish between alpha, beta, unlimited, revised, 4th, and 5th.... Well at least to distinguish between unlimited and revised. And between alpha and beta. And between 4th and 5th. further apart than that though and it's easy because of the borders or copyright at the bottom, but now it's really complicated, damn. Black border revised, holy hell. Where do you get this info? It's not on crystalkeep or wikipedia, is there a more specific site for info on foreign magic?
I know this because I was there (metaphorically speaking..hehe). Have always been a collector/player/judge/rarity type. Plus knowing Paul Waterman helped too, he liked the same useless info that I did.
I used to know a good website that had such histories, but besides bits and pieces here and there, I don't know any more. If I find something I'll post it here for you.

AWESOME! Thanks, it looks like they only had English up until The Dark, then they added only Italian for the dark and legends. They didn't bother printing Fallen Empires in Italian though, lol.
Then for the Ice Age block they added spanish, portugese, german, and french. Then they added Japanese for Mirage, then Korean and Traditional Chinese for Visions, they very next set.
They finally added Simplified Chinese in Urza's Saga, but very strangely they stopped printing Korean and Simplified Chinese for Legacy and Destiny.......
They didn't start reprinting simplified Chinese until Invasion, and they stopped printing traditional chinese with darksteel.
Does anyone know the reason for any of this? I wonder what was going on.... Also, that site doesn't include Russian, hasn't russian been printed until after Kamigawa (the last block that site is updated to)? I like how they gave up on the site after kamigawa too, lol........
There was a tcg game called jyhad, which is now vampires something something or whatever... but middle easterners were not happy about a tcg game called jyhad so they stopped the game and started on the vampire name or they just switched names but continued. My bro collected that and I collected magic. Haha mines worth more

Hasn't been updated in quite a while, but a pretty thorough history of the older sets.
Mebbe there's a wiki out there with such factoids...
