Hi!
On an old Blogatog Post MaRo says that "Urza’s Saga was the only time in my twenty plus years that I (along with all of Magic R&D) got taken to the CEO’s office and yelled at, told that if it happened again, I’d be fired." The question was referencing "combo winter." What is this big controversy?
I started around ROE so I have no idea what this is.
Please help!

I am trying to get better at making decks. I have had trouble creating more competitive decks as I only really build with the cards I have. I dont have that many value cards, in function or expense. I (almost) never play at FNM type events so its not like im playing against $2k decks. If I do usally play at one, Its a draft or limited game. Any advice on building decks is greatly supported! DMs are appreciated.
Thank you!
To put it more simply, it's like saying, "I can prove Jesus is real and loves you. See? Here's my Hispanic friend Jesus. He's had a crush on you for a long time. Tell em' Jesus."
Here's a joke! Whats the internal temperature of a Taun-Taun?
It was a horrible period when the game was dominated by combos that could consistently win the game on turn one.
taking it one step further, people quit the game in droves. as mentioned above, many games were quite literally decided on who won the coin flip.
'
What were some of the combos that were game breaking at this time?

The most terryfing of them involving creating absurdly high almounts of mana by combining 0-cost artifacts, Grim Monolith, and Tolarian Academy, drawing extra cards with Windfall, drawing even more cards and generating even more mana with Time Spiral untapping the Academy, and then decking out your opponent with Stroke of Genius. That could consistently be pulled out on your first turn.
TThere was another that used all the cheap artifact mana and Tinker / Memory Jar, using Megrim as a win condition.
Memory Jar was banned before it did anything heinous.
Right you are. I was thinking of the Type 1.5 deck that used the Jar to degeneracy. I think it's the only card ever to have the honor of being pre-banned.
It's always disheartening for me to read that WotC saw Urza's block as a cautionary tale. It was the only block where every card felt like it was supposed to be good at something. I still have probably opened more packs from Urza's Saga/Legacy than the rest of MtG's history combined.
The "broken" cards that WotC regrets are still the most fun cards ever printed in terms of coming up with new combinations, setting up complex gamestates and making the game really complicated and interesting. If I could make the call, I'd want WotC to remain that liberal with their design/development processes, but when it becomes a problem, to get more restrictive with their banlists for organized play.

You'd be correct there. That's when I quit Magic (after playing since Revised) because "games" were just so silly. You either played Combo and won the coin flip or you lost. I only came back five years ago around New Phyrexia.

This, but the deck existed prior to Grim and used Mana Vault. You literally won on turn one or two. I faced dwon Ritual Sarcomancy/Carnophagex2 and still won, it was that oppressive. Was fun for a month or two I guess.

There were also Earthcraft, Recurring Nightmare, Yawgmoth's Will, Mind Over Matter, Dream Halls and Memory Jar, all of which could be comboed in many degenerate ways.
