Hey everyone. I am going to my first SCG Invitational Qualifier and was wondering if anyone had any advice for a first timer. Im going in expecting to not do well so Im not disappointed. I want to get the feel of it and see how they work before I start seriously attending them. Also the one I plan on going to is standard only does that mean that nothing but standard will be played there? Will there be any side events? Any advice and/or tips would be most welcome! Thanks!!
EDIT: Other than the entry fee. How much cash should i bring? This is assuming I dont need sleeves or any cards.
Guess this is your first competitive level event, so same general advice as you would get for all of them.
1. Show up with time to spare, 20-30 minutes if you can.
2. Judges are there to help, don't be afraid to ask them any questions you may have.
3. Your opponent may be a fantastic person, but if you are confused about a card interaction or how to proceed in a situation, ask a judge.
4. Buy new sleeves, preferably ones that you can't see through so as to avoid marked cards issues.
5. Have a friend check over your decklist after you fill it out, do the same for them.
6. When all else fails, ask a judge, they are your best resource at the event.
Give your opponent 0 reasons to call a judge for something you have done incorrectly, play a really tight game because there are a lot of unsavory characters at these things that fish for wins.
EDIT:
OH! And bring your own pen/paper. Or they'll try to sell you their offical lifepad and a pen for a buck. The pen doesn't even have a logo on it.
Hahaha I keep one in my bag with all my cards and such. I hate FNM without one I cant imagine going to something like this and not having it. I will still probably buy a "official" life pad as a memento of my first big event.
An Invitational Qualifier may or may not be a large event. It depends on the LGS and how they advertised for it. The number of rounds depends on the attendance. Our most recent Standard one had 89 players and Legacy had 54. Other than $25 for entry, you really don't need anything else other than for food and drink.
No matter how many players are there, they can be very competitive events. Even with a smaller number, it can be really competitive; it just means only real Grinders went. I'm assuming the location is at a Land Ground Store; perhaps your regular store?

Legacy - Sneak Show, BR Reanimator, Miracles, UW Stoneblade
Premodern - Trix, RecSur, Enchantress, Reanimator, Elves https://www.facebook.com/groups/PremodernUSA/ Modern - Neobrand, Hogaak Vine, Elves
Standard - Mono Red (6-2 and 5-3 in 2 McQ)
Draft - (I wish I had more time for limited...)
Commander - Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build) (dead format for me)

No I live in a small town without a card shop, I have to drive 30 min for FNM. The event is an hour away, but it is the closest place to me thats holds these events. Thats why I'm trying to prep. as much as I can before I head out.
I did my first SCG IQ this summer. My advice for you is to relax, take your time, and play the best you can with whatever the luck of the draw gives you. Make sure to ask the judge if you need anything, especially related to the game at hand.
As for lunch, there is not usually a break but if you finish your match early you can probably go out and get something before the next round starts. I was able to last standard season and I was playing the notoriously slow Drownyard Esper.
Yeah, these events are really just like a giant, highly competitive FNM. If you're FNM is competitive, then it's pretty much the same thing.
There will be between 6-10 rounds and then a top 8.
I only ever played one, and I split top 4.
Basically, what you want to do, is probably bring a really quick aggro deck because most people are probably going to play control.
Like, I played UW humans with Geist and Silverblade. 4/4 double strike angel getcha. Most of my opponents were playing control, and they all expected a control heavy meta, so playing a UW aggro deck threw them off.

There is not, and you should. Just be discreet.
